Daniel's electrician: Alright sir, to fix your electricity I'm just going to have to reverse the polarities.
2:52 Daniel: CRINGE!!!
Well, why was there something wrong with the polarities in the first place? They don't reverse themselves.
60 times a second...
"alright sir, to fix your photosynthesis I need to reverse your quantum pH scale"
@@userJohnSmith True, household electricity is 60hz alternating current, but there is still a polarity, sort of. Typical household electricity in North America (not sure about elsewhere) is a "split single phase". There are actually three lines that enter the house, two hot and a neutral (Four if you count the ground, but sometimes the ground is to a metal post buried near the foundation and not always with the lines on the grid.) The voltage between both hot lines, which are out of phase opposite to each other, adds up to about 230 volts. The neutral usually doesn't have any current running through it unless it is completing the circuit with the grid. Between any one hot and either neutral is half that at about 115 volts, which is the voltage in a typical wall outlet or light socket. One of the contacts is a hot and one is the neutral and the openings to these contacts differ slightly in size, with the slightly larger one on the left being the neutral, the slightly smaller one on the right being the hot, and the hemispherical one on the bottom being the ground (not every appliance has a ground connection). Despite alternating, the power is essentially supplied through the hot and leaves through the neutral, usually it doesn't matter but for some appliances or switch types it does. Polarised plugs have prongs of differing sizes to prevent incorrect insertion as a safety measure, and so the appliance doesn't malfunction if it is sensitive to incorrect polarity.
So, yes you can have erroneous polarity in an alternating current system if it is split phase, which house wiring is.
@@AAA-de6gt The wires could have been installed incorrectly in the first place, or put back incorrectly after replacing a switch or receptacle. Not everything is sensitive to reversed polarities so it would't necessarily cause a full time problem that would be noticed immediately.
The Sci-fi motto: When in doubt just say "quantum"
Update: just use the current scientific buzzword, whatever that may be. Soon (or has it already begun/happened?) that word(s) will be "dark matter," "dark energy," or some other thing I'm not thinking about right now. Like "the Xth dimension" or something.
My hot take: "Crowns" are the "credits" of fantasy.
If you are feeling particularly lazy, you call them [name of very valuable material in medieval fantasyland]
@@eadlc "He threw the innkeeper a gold piece to pay his tab."

I wonder if part of the reason that sci fi is darker now, is that the authors think their dystopian view on the future is the most realistic one. But I would also like some optimistic sci fi
Her (2013) was rather optimistic, can't think of much else
Because its the more realistic and likely outcome, I find gritty scifi boring. I read for escapism so I don't like this trend.
I think the reason sci fi is so dark and gritty is because it might be easier to write in terms of creating conflict. Don’t take my word on it, I don’t write.
It's a sad trend on our overall view of the future
Humans generally focus on the negative. It's why, although violent crime rates are way down, reporting of these events are way up. Also I think because of that innate bias, authors are preferring to write warnings about what they see as possible than to be optimistic. Optimism may also lead to less fear over the negative consequences of too much progress, which some authors may fear create complacency to the possible darker trends. Because humans, as a whole, dwell on the negative, it probably sells better as well. That's all just my take other than my two opening facts.
www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2020/11/20/facts-about-crime-in-the-u-s/ links to crime rate and perceived crime rate according to Pew Research. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3652533/ discusses negativity bias in more detail according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information.
Hot Take: A lot of middle-grade fantasy is really underrated. I naturally love Sanderson, Tolkien, Jordan, etc, for epic fantasies and sweeping worlds. But sometimes a lot of modern fantasy just seems dark and sad. I've found that some middle-grade fantasy series are written on a fairly high level, and are targeted at an audience that isn't old enough yet to want gritty, dark sorts of stories. I'm not saying that these middle-grade fantasies are great, or better written, but sometimes they're really enjoyable as a change of pace from epic fantasy. Does anyone else have that perspective?
And yes, definitely more let's debate videos!
Yes, the queen's thief series by Megan Whalen Turner is a very good example of this imo.
I feel you. Sometimes I need something that’s not going to break my heart every 3 chapters.
I totally agree with you.
I agree with you on that. I grew up with the Riftwar Saga and other books of the like, and even now that I'm in my late 20's I'd still read them because they were well written and fun.
Yes! Especially reading them in-between more adult books.
On the thing about Scifi leaning more towards dystopias, I saw an interview with George R.R. Martin where he said that he believed the reason for this development is the fact that people today generally have less faith in, and hope for, the future than they did previously, which I think makes a lot of sense.
Also if the scifi author‘s goal is to make the science as realistic as possible... it is the most likely outcome based on the facts of today‘s science....
@@1zebbe3 Great point. I mean, it's hard to look at the world today and everything we know and everything going on and then imagine a bright shining future ahead of us.
I pretty much wanted to write exactly that and felt pretty clever there for a minute and than I learned George Martin said it already...
Probably because today we have a tendency to focus on negative aspects on our society, making the world seem much worse than it actually is
My hot take is that Daniel doesn't do enough of these debates.
Also, is the post office okay? Did everybody stop sending boxes that may or may not contain a bomb.
He closed his PO cus there was just way too much stuff being sent, and it filled up the post office to a point where they got annoyed.

I see that as devolving (reference to the answering assumptions video)

Soooooo... hes dying?
@@milom5030 So what? People have opinions. That's what they are and whether it's nice to say it or not has no bearing on its accuracy or any other aspect of communication. It appears you fail to realize that real discussion requires that someone mention not nice things quite often. Don't be a victim for someone else or assume that they will appreciate it. Many will not. I like my conversation to come up and punch me in the face... quite often that's the only way to get my attention.
“The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet” by Becky Chambers is one of the best modern examples of a whimsical, character-driven, diverse sci fi novel. It also gives rich details about alien cultures!
Embassytown by China Mieville is a fantastic standalone sci-fi book that dives into the concept of truly "alien" aliens. Really cool stuff!
This comment. Thank you for recommending that modern classic.
I love the Let’s Debate format!
Also if y’all haven’t watched Arrival, go watch it! Linguistics expert communicating with aliens. What more can a person ask for??
daniel you should read a book called "The long way to a small angry planet" it's whimsical, character driven sci-fi and it's wonderful. Short read too, comparatively.
That was a pretty good book but the author and I parted ways in book two. Just a completely different type of story.
@@saltzytheslick oh? I'm not going to lie, I didn't even realize it was in a series. I feel like leaving it after book 1 would've been a fine end to the story but whatever, I guess
Daniel was finally convinced that he could cut off his hand with a microphone knife that he decided to use a handy hand now?
Miracles happen, heavens!
them: SCI FI CHARACTERS BAD!
me: umm... Have you ever read Philip K. Dick or Ray Bradbury?
In here to recommend Becky Chambers for whimsy, cool aliens with culture, and just a fun time. That is all. Thank you.
Yeah I was going to say this too
you're welcome.
I've said it once before, I'll say it again: Revelation Space has one of the best sci-fi settings ever. It helps that the author is an actual physicist.
I'm reading through Zima Blue and let me tell you, those stories are GOOD.
I got about 200 pages in and had to stop. I think his writing just doesn't speak to me tbh
The OSP trope talk "Planet of Hats" is relevant here. The aliens all do the one thing, that is their hat.
Sci-fi jargon:
looking at you flash, then again after season 1 the speed force basically became magic.
RUN FASTER!
To quote the astronaut meme, "It always was."
Superhero science fiction is different from actual science fiction, in that it doesn't need to be science. Just fiction. Its why Iron Man can have all those ridiculous armors, why radiation turns Bruce Banner into Hulk rather than into a corpse and why no one can recreate a serum that would very likely be easy to recreate if you have a sample of the person that it was used on.
@@thethingthatshouldnotbe7221 I know, its a joke about the flash Tv show, how it started out somewhat reasonable enough( being that it at least tried to sound scientifically accurate at times yet simple to grasp) but just devolved into pointless jargon that seemed redundant at times and couldn't even keep to its own internal consistency .
10:43 TBF, the 'phones' in The Expanse seem like they're much more a thin client or fairly sophisticated IO device than current phones, which are designed to do most of the work they do 'on board'.
OoOoOoOoh Boi LETS DEBATE. Honestly this is what I love about Daniel’s channel. It’s an awesome way to connect readers and writers across the board.
Also OMG I was featured! The Goblin has looked down upon my comment.
Love this discussion! I'm currently writing a sci-fi/fantasy trilogy that begins as dystopian and ends as utopian. Hoping to find the balance and imagine a path toward a better future for humanity while also being realistic about the depth of the crises we face. ✌️
I love debates! It's one of biggest things i look forward to seeing on the channel. Keep it up 💯💯
Same!
*SIMPLE TAKE:* It would be nice to see more positives outlook/approach towards the sci-fi genre such as Solarpunk, where humankind, fauna and nature learns to co-exist with one another. Or even different sub-genres such as Steampunk, or Teslapunk.
The problem isn't the harmony between man and nature, the problem is that the definition of harmony is fundamentally a HUMAN idea. You can say the Hive city/planet in 40k is extreme human-centric "harmony", 'cause other things are all dead.
The interesting part of conflict between species is that how to push the boundary of definition itself. If you already have a set definition, then it will be boring and you will know the ending without reading the book. Then that just not gonna be the center gimmick/selling-point.
There is no peace in Nature. Everything is desperately trying to dominate and/or outcompete one-another. The problem is Humans now and for the first time are actually able to dominate other species, while still depending on them. So if we keep using the old natural instincts we will cripple our own eco-system (also a completely natural phenomenon that happens often, with the completely normal outcome of the species going extinct) and that's not really the outcome we want. So we need to be mindful of our actions more than ever before.
In some regards Sci-fi is really good to show this, as the eco-systems on the ships/colonies will be more fragile and require more care. There was a moment in Caliban's War, where an imbalance of a few microorganisms and the neglect of the scientists (due to violent riots) caused the life-support system entering a cascading failure.
The good side of all this is that if we live long enough, we'll start seeing the eco-system as something to protect and cherish, not simply exploit and take for granted.
For the alien comprehension dilemma: Children of Time and the sequel Children of ruin! The whole premise is the bridging the gap between species.
An excellent series!
I totally agree with your adventure sci-fi take!! I’m currently trying to get into sci-fi but have been a bit put off by the technical idea exploring it does sometimes and have talked ab it on my channel. I would love more adventure focused sci-fi to keep me gripped in the story!!!
I would recommend Pandora's Star by Peter F. Hamilton. Its an interesting take on future society that is essentially a murder mystery turned Galactic mystery that begins with Mans first Mars Landing. The Astronaut, contemplating the momentous words for the event, steps out of the module only to be greeted by a geek standing next to a hole in the air saying "Sorry, Bud. You are 5 minutes late."
First you trick me into reading all of murderbot these last 2 weeks and now we do a sci-fi video to capitalize on that!
Edit: You mad robo goblin!!
How could I ever get tired of Let's Debate?
Let's Debate is what got me into this channel, and I smile every time there's a new one of these.
Three.
Three times since I subscribed.
In nearly six months.
Can't we get one of these every month?
Actually that sounds like a lot of work.
But I still want more.
4:27 Accepting your assertions as true (there are some asterisks I would add, but that's a whole other topic) what makes you think technology is the driving factor behind this "awakening" as you call it, rather than simply a concurrent social development in the society which you live? You seem to be pairing scientific/technological progress with moral progress, and I'm not sure on what basis you're doing that, unless you believe there is some kind of universal moral law that is being discovered, in the same way that we discover the laws of nature.
I would like to one day see what Daniel's take on the Warhammer 40k and 30k series and its take on dark sci fi and fantasy. Unless he has already made a video about then I just missed those.
Get it while it it Hot Hot Hot!!!
Hot Take: People are tired of Marvel. There are still and always will be Marvel-fans, but the draw to general audiences is spent, and they are ready for something new.
Hot Take Pt2: Streaming studios, rather than try for broad popularity by aiming the 'general audiences', studios are taking a more diversified approach; by producing a variety of content that will appeal to a variety of niche groups. In an effort to try and gather a 'cult following' behind each of these properties.
Hot Take Pt3 (As a product of both the above Hot-Takes...): WandaVision is going to be one of these 'cult classics'. Very popular with the audience it is aimed at, but lacking in wide appeal.
You are completely correct. I like WandaVision a lot and the only thing that’s gonna make me give a damn about a Marvel movie again is Doctor Doom (well, him and my boy Shang-Chi).
Really dig the Let's Debate videos, it had been awhile since the last! I think they are great bc if the inherent audience interaction, keep them coming!
You have mentioned Annihilation in movie context few times over the last year, but never the book

This is why I love The Expanse, it's basically Optimistically Gritty.
Daniel, could you please were that shirt whenever you do a Let's Debate? Or else something greener? It's wonderful being able to see most of the question your reading from through your broad manly torso - in case I can't hear a word, or if you summarize parts of it.

Let's Debate and Fantasy News are the two things that I subscribed for. Please keep doing them 😊.
I know you’re not super into anime or manga but the ending of “All you need is kill” is far better than the ending of the western interpretation “Edge of tomorrow”
And you can find that shit for free on the internet. I sure did with the second part (which I kinda regret because I can't remember the ending).
In response to the one take, “Solarpunk” is a happy view of the future. It prioritizes living with nature and multiculturalism while still moving forward with tech, and I’d love to see more stories based in it
This sounds exactly like a genre I would love. I may have to write my own though.
It's kind of funny that the most predominate piece of SolarPunk is the Pokemon games.
Isn't Solarpunk still just a proposed subgenre rather than a real literary movement? And I don't mean just coming up with loose examples from other genres that might also fit into its criteria, but deliberate attempts to actually produce works within its framework.
@@osoisko1933 I mean Idk what it takes for a genre/subgenre to be realized per say. Mary Shelly probably wasn’t entirely sure what she was creating with Frankenstein, yet here she is, one of the mothers of Sci-fi as we know it. Or if a genre even needs a literary source to be conceived.
Having thought about it, Nintendo seems to hit on the whole Solarpunk idea alot-whether incidentally or not. Pikmin, Mario Sunshine, Splatoon-to name a couple more besides Pokemon. Neo-Cab probably fits as well in terms of world, with a bit more emphasis on punk.
@Nicholas Art I know what you mean, but has anyone looked at Pokemon and gone "I want to focus on the green energy aspect of the setting," and created inspired works that could be called 'Solarpunk' or did they focus more on little kids fighting with fanciful monster-pets? There in lies the difference.
Solarpunk has, to my knowledge, been entirely comprised of a manifesto and some artwork. This could be considered an art genre, but you can't collect a bunch of themes and motifs, then declare a literary movement without any literature. And what's been offered as examples is merely inspiration material and not actual examples of the proposed genre.
Also we truly need to stop labeling everything with a -punk. Most Punk Punks are either just aesthetics or cyberpunk in a different form and/or era. It doesn't elevate a work by slapping punk onto the end. The only reason we even call Victorian steam powered stuff 'Steampunk' is because of a joke.
Love your debates. Definutely continue.
I like the kind of sci Fi, where it has lore like a fantasy. Metroid is a pretty good example of this.
Love these! I may be more or less interested depending on the subject but they're always fun and even informative. Perhaps some more specific questions could help so they don't get repeptitive.

Unfortunately, at least in the US violating property rights still results in more severe sentencing than bodily harm for everything except murder. Brain something with a bat & as long as they survive its better than taking their wallet.
My peeve about scifi is just how small planets become. Like, I get why in the scope of a galaxy, a world can seem tiny, but look at how big and diverse Earth is. Like theres a joke that Dagobah is not one giant swamp, and was actually a nice place, just Yoda was chilling in this swamp on Dagobah.
In the past (ie when I was in college in the 2000s) I've seen critics and academics describe something like Star Wars (ie sci-fi world but focused on adventure with some potential for magic) as "space opera." Do you think that term has fallen out of favor? To me "sci-fantasy" is more like when you have a fantasy world but there maybe leftover technology from an advanced civilization, and some of the "magic" maybe be scientific in origin. There are many pulp stories like this that inspired Gary Gygax in making D&D. More recent examples might be Book of the New Sun and Broken Earth.
Space opera and sci- fantasy are different sub genres. Space opera has to do with the galactic scale of the conflict and a war. Sci- fantasy has to do with does the universe have magic or not. Originally this didn't included psychic powers because John W. Campbell believed psychics were real but now that the consensus has shifted to skepticism Star Wars has moved into Sci-Fantasy.
@@robertblume2951 Seems like it would qualify for both then.
@@robertdullnig3625 yes, it's more of an emphasis. Basically sci-fantasy wasn't a thing during the golden age of scifi. Campbell is the one who really separated scifi out of weird tales.
Anwser to many of the hot takes: *Long way to a small angry planet*
William Gibson (Neuromamcer) was asked in an interview why he shifted from sci fi to contemporary fiction back ik the 00's. he replied "This is worse than anything I thought up in the 80s."
I love this series! So glad it's back
Let’s Debate is one of my favorites! I miss the longer ones!
I can't believe I'm about to say this but suppeerrrr hot take: The Host by Stephanie Meyer (the book, not the movie) is actually a really great example of sci-fi without the dark atmosphere. It leans YA so it won't be everyone's cup of tea, but even though it tackles a somewhat grim subject the atmosphere isn't dark and it has a happy ending, which we don't often see in sci-fi. And the premise and supporting details of the plot are unique, even if the format is familiar.
These are fun. I'm happy to keep seeing content like this.
Hot take. The best scifi series is The Book of the New Sun. Its use of archaic, non-fictional words to create a scene so foreign in nature, yet so much like our own history has yet to be replicated. It is a shame Gene Wolfe is not as well-known as he ought to be.
The closest Daniel has come to talking about Philip K. Dick with Bladerunner 2049 :((((((
I’d really love to hear Daniel’s take on literally any novel or short story by Dick, and I think it’s sad that he has yet to make a video about him.
Dick was (and in many cases still is) one of the greatest unsung writers of the Sci-fi genre and offered so much that still feels refreshing to read to this day.
While I to enjoy PKD, saying he is unsung is a vast overstatement. He has about 10 movies and a TV show to his credit.
@@robertblume2951 Yet many don’t know his name. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve talked to people about Bladerunner or about the new Man In The High Castle show and ask, “What are your thoughts about Philip K. Dick?” And they’ll say, “Who???”
They know the movies, they know ideas, but they don’t know who came up with them and wrote them.
I could be wrong but it seems to me like Dick doesn’t nearly get enough attention (especially his novels).
@@bingbong8951 I mean you are right at least about his novels but those screen writers had to at least read his works to steal ideas from and the people who do read will use the movies as a jump off point. People just don't read these days.
@@robertblume2951 Very true!

In fantasy sci-fi: it's surprising that the magic system isn't integrated into the technology, like magic being the power source for pieces of said technology or using magical energy as a source of electricity.

I think cellphones could evolve greatly in conjunction with other Technologies like programmable matter I imagine traveling salesman being able to head up that honey do list from across the country using programmable matter avatars might save a lot of marriages 10 times better than a Skype call
I think one argument for more positive sci/fi stories is that if we even survive far into the future and explore space it means we have figured out a lot of the stuff we're dealing with on Earth today. It seems logical.
It's not Sci-Fi but if anyone is looking for a bit of fluffy goodness to combat the darkness in our society, I highly recommend T.J. Klune's The House in the Cerulean Sea. It's so well executed and a perfect escape from our world.
I enjoy the let debates!!!
I like these vids. My only criticism is half the questions were typical cliched and contrarian stuff that more or less gets brought up in everyone of these videos (it's too dark, shallow characters, Hollywood sucks, etc). You address them very well, but I hope to see some more variety like the smart phone, non-humanoid aliens, empathy through tech, and so forth.
Love lets debate, hope it pops up more
Love the let’s debate videos!
Hot Take: Daniel doesn't do enough of these.
Please do more. I love the show.
Also I think the reason most sci-fi has gotten darker is that sci-fi has also included ideas of predicting the future and a happy future isn't a very realistic idea to many writers. Trying to portray the future as anything but bleak would be 'fantasy' and not 'science fiction', if that makes any sense. Personally I'm expecting our best possible outcome to resemble Old Night, that way I'm either right or pleasantly surprised.
If it isn't on your to-read list already, A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine really should be when we're talking modern sci-fi.
Even with the praise it has gotten, I still think it is criminally underrated for how great Martine writes conversations between characters in this book - you really felt the weight of what they said, and what they chose not to say. IMO it's so impressive for a first release.
It's has a quite interesting and pretty unique "tech feature", which the story is (sort of) centred on, and that's what originally made me read it. But I'm definitely staying with this series for the characters and the (almost hyper-)focus on culture/culture-clash, and though there wasn't a ton of world-building, what was got me hooked to see where she takes this series - it sort of felt like a prologue in the best way.
And book #2 is coming out next month!
I love the Let's Debates!
I find it a little ironic complaining about dark and gritty sci fi considering the popularity of grimdark in fantasy.
And that our flip phones were based on star trek communicators as most techies are/were trekkies. Except for the one guy reading about Vikings when coming up with bluetooth.
I would really like to have just once following happen (or would like to know wether or not it happened and where):
Technology through magic that comes from technology, but it is magic since people have forgotten about it for one reason or another.
Alias something like for example an internet 2.0 made out of magic but it is actually just super advanced technology at play there unbeknownst to most and that part plays a huge part in the lore of the world and its story.
It allready exists Tech like the glasses from Spiderman Far From Home, not the AI of course, but having a screen in your glasses... Things like that are the future, I believe that humanity will sooner or later split in two classes.
First, there are the people who embrace the new Tech and adept to it.
And second, the ones that don't want even more Tech that can track you in even mire ways down.
I don't remember the name of the movie, but there is one with Bruce Willis, where the most people live their lives as controlled Androids.
While at the same time, there are people who reject the idea of not being in your own body and the ability to be completely in control of their body.
We tried Google Glasses, they died. There is a limit to the types of wearables people will use.
@@andrewdiaz3529 I don't mean Google Glasses. It is a Canadian Company that makes them.
Well, how about a debate regarding the relationship we have with technology and how that’s usually pretty one sided and dumbly written in scifi
I think The Orville is a better candidate for a modern Star Trek than the latest actual Star Trek movies and series. It's a comedy and the science is not really meant to make sense, but I think it's still closer to TNG than Discovery or even Picard in terms of character development, exploration of morality, interaction with alien cultures, etc.
Are you telling me “reverse the polarity of the neutron flow” is *not* a creditable scientific response?!? 😱
