How do you feel about "elevated horror?"
You said it best! I didn’t see LL yet so I skipped to the words of wisdom....All horror is just horror to me, I love it. Some good, bad and great. The range can be huge. Crash (96), Midsommar, Halloween, are just types of horror. They’re just different sub genres
If that particular group branched out and didn’t focus on a few current studios, I’m curious what horror from the 40’s - 00’s they would coin “elevated” 😂
I hate the term tbh. Nobody called There Will Be Blood or No Country For Old Men "elevated" dramas. Horror, much like sci-fi for a loooooong time, seems to STILL be stuck as less than or 'for the weirdos'. Still. In 2024. Nothing can be considered good or in this case damn near a masterpiece bc of its 'genre' or subject matter. That's why I encourage us all to speak with our wallets bc it is the only language they understand.
Stupid term!🤔
Elevated horror is a pretty lame way of explaining horror, all horror can be elevated. However, it does do a good job as a catch all term for "a film that can be watched by your grandmother and mother on a random night due to the writing often being at the forefront".
@@pizowell I hate the term they put story telling above traditional scares and jumps story telling has it's place but someone is always trying to come up with something better less is more
The term “elevated horror” is the most pretentious, douchebag thing that non-horror fans like to say to make themselves feel better about enjoying a horror film.
You took the words right out of my mouth!
@@ghosty549 🤘🏻
GenZ garbage term. Yep
I can't stand the term. I'm guessing a group of snobby people came up with the term to sound more sophisticated than they actually are. It's like people are embarrassed to like "horror" movies.
This movie was so good and scary I can't wait to buy it on Blu-ray!!
I also loathe the term "Elevated Horror"
I agree Piz I was uncomfortable the entire movie too. Acting was awesome.
A great watch, left me with lots of unanswered questions. I wanted more…as in, didn’t want it to end! Definitely looking forward to a second watch and then a physical release, this will definitely be one I return to a few times. I can see a prequel going into more detail. The longlegs character has more to give I’m sure…whether it be a sequel or prequel, I think we will see him again! Love the channel Piz!
Thank you!
Alicia Witt was the MVP in this for me.
She killed it!
I hate the term elevated horror. it sounds like a Gen Z thing😅
it is. Their generation is garbage.
I'm so happy you loved it. Really hoping it makes all the money so we can get more original horror made.
Yes, indeed! Great horror like this deserves our support.
Agree w your rant lol, I also agree w The Blackcoats Daughter being a great movie that I’m glad is in my collection. Looking forward to seeing Longlegs!
The Blackcoat's Daughter is so good!
Elevated horror is such a dumb term. I loved the rant. And yes! Longlegs is easily one of the best of the year, for me at least. Glad you dug it dude.
Agreed, I hate the term. It's like film-makers who use 'elevated horror' to describe their films, are doing it because they don't want to be lumped in with what they think is trashy horror. Well, in years to come, people will still be watching Freddy, Jason and Michael. I know I will.
70s giallos, 80s-90s slashers will always be revered and iconic. All these modern ‘elevated horror’ movies will be quickly come and go like farts in the wind.
I watched this Friday night and really liked it. It was insane from start to finish, in a good way. Nicholas Cage was amazing as Longlegs. Osgood Perkins is a chip off the block when it comes to making horror movies. Highly recommend .
I want to see this movie now, thanks Piz. And that T. shirt is awesome.
Thank you! The shirt is available in my TeePublic store.
I liked all the films by Osgood Perkins i will watch it soon. I agree i hate elevated horror i remember when the remake of Suspiria (i dislike it) release i read articles how now the horror films are good... they can't write about horror films without knowing the history about them... The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu or other horror films aren't elevated enough?
Just got out of seeing this a bit ago. Loved it! Especially the third part where everything comes together. Blackcoat’s Daughter really doesn’t get talked about enough, that is still my favorite Oz Perkins movie.
I didn’t view this movie as being elevated horror. Every movie that has been labeled elevated to my knowledge has bored the hell out of me, but this movie was awesome.
People talk about elevated horror like its a new thing. Like we dont have a long history of films like
Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920)
Haxan (1922)
Eyes without a Face (1960)
Onibaba (1964)
Repulsion (1965)
Rosemary's Baby (1968)
Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970)
Eraserhead (1977)
Suspiria (1977)
Videodrome (1983)
Santa Sangre (1989)
Hell all of Shinya Tsukamoto's filmography. Just off the top of my head.
None of this is new. Its like saying such a thing like elevated dramas exist because we have films like Metamorphosis of Birds (2020) vs Juno (2007). Both are dramas but we dont use elevated for one over the other.
i wouldnt say i was very scared but i also didn’t wanna sit quietly in the dark afterwards with nothing but my thoughts to keep me company. it was an absolute fun and unpredictable ride that i can’t wait to ride again. 9.2/10. nic cage 10/10 oscar worthy performance
What did Jeremy think of long legs?
He didn't go with me. Jeremy would have called it "too creepy."
I think the term “elevated horror” has replaced “thrillers” for people that think a movie is more sophisticated than horror. HOWEVER, I don’t necessarily associate the term “elevated horror” with quality. For example, I absolutely hate Hereditary, The Babadook, and The Witch. I think all 3 of those movies are highly overrated.
Awesome video Piz hope you're well my awesome friend . glad to see Nicolas Cage doing more horror films .
The term elevated horror implies all horror is garbage and lowbrow with an occasional exception. The term almost sounds like a dog whistle signaling snobs that it’s ok to watch or like a certain film.
The "elevated horror" term is simply this ridiculous need to label every damn thing in the world now. The term is starting to become a derogatory label for artistic and well made horror flicks. People who claim to hate "elevated" horror movies should stick to the Saw franchise.
2024 is a vintage year for so for horror ,all original movies no remakes , oh congrats on reaching 60k subs
Couldn't agree more Piz! 🙌🏻 Give us more of THIS horror 😍 Uncomfortable, is the perfect word to describe LongLegs.
Saw it last night and it'll definitely be as remembered as some of the greatest horror movies. I went in absolutely cold, the only thing I knew was what Longlegs sounded like when I called the phone number. Nicolas made Hannibal Lecter and Buffalo Bill look like Muppet Babies in this movie. I completely agree on the cinematography, freaking beautiful.
Great movie, but completely disrespectful to the unsettling genius that was lecter
Finally a review where the title isn't saying something about the movie being overhyped. Or not living up to it. Those exaggerated blurbs from early reviewers always end up screwing a movie over. I wish content creators would stop doing it. But we know why. Stsying in a studios good grace, trying to get their blurbs on a trailer or poster to get more eyes on their channel. It's scummy. Movies nowhere near scary, but it's a GREAT movie imo. Except the ending. And them hammering in what was happening at the end with the mothers narration when we find out who the accomplice was right before she started speaking. That part was really unnecessary
"Elevated Horror" is the bane of my existence
@Pizowell I’m seeing this tomorrow with my dad and I can’t wait, I’ve just been waiting for the right time to pounce so to speak, and getting ready to see the movie tomorrow with my dad, I just had to get someone to take me since I don’t drive and tomorrow is the day I was finally able to do that.
Longlegs was good, but it's not on the same level as Silence of the Lambs. Considering the current state of modern cinema, I can see why some people might make this comparison.
I was stoked you mentioned The Blackcoat’s Daughter. After leaving the theatre, I told my friend about it and how it has a lot of similarities with-and ties to-Longlegs. It’s like Osgood Perkins refined his themes and overall style.
Fun fact: I was lucky enough to see a limited screening of this on 35mm at the Vista Theatre.
It's like they take place in the same universe. Awesome that you saw the film in 35. That's very cool.
@@pizowell Yes. A very cold and evil universe where demons like to make phone calls.
Completely mystified why this film has everyone so excited 🤔 I was bored at many moments throughout the first two acts. And the switch to the supernatural didn't work at all for me. I love Nic Cage but I found his performance to be unbelievable and to be honest silly! I wasn't chilled, scared or surprised once.
I thought this film was hyped through marketing but it's been through horror fans which really surprises me. If this is the best modern horror has to offer the genre is in trouble.
Monroe's character was so lacking depth, despite all the foul things that she experienced, I simply didn't care. Their were barely any recognisable characteristics of a human being. Really dissapointed by this film and reaction it's received by hardened horror fans 🤔
I absolutely hate the term “elevated horror.” The term “thriller” is nowhere near as pretentious or insulting as “elevated horror.”
"Scariest film of the decade?" No. "Overhyped?" Yeah, probably. "A wonderfully creepy film by one of the more unique and nuanced voices in horror over the past ten years or so?" Absolutely!
The marketing of the film may have actually been a little too good (if such a thing is possible...) but I will say that this was was the most crowded cinema I've sat in in a very, very long time, and I'm thrilled that an Oz Perkins film is being given this much attention. No doubt it will lead many to seek out his previous work (The Blackcoat's Daughter is stunningly good) and will hopefully give studios more confidence in supporting and promoting his work in the future. Though his approach is generally more subtle and (dare I say) poetic than some in the genre, his name deserves mention among other greats such as Aster, Eggers, and Flanagan.
As for the term "elevated horror" - I get the angsty, defensive replies it often triggers within the horror community. I remember Neil Gaiman many years ago commenting on a similar attitude toward referring to exceptional comic books as "graphic novels," as if they somehow transcended a genre that was otherwise rather embarrassing. But, to me, it's all just about semantics and labels, and I don't have a that huge an issue with it, especially if it gets some anti-horror snob to check out a film like Longlegs.
As Gene Wilder says in Young Frankenstein... "Elevate me!"
Well Piz thank-you for the recommendation. I need a spring in my step. I use to live & die in the cinema but there seems to be nothing new on that's actually worth it. I remember seeing 8MM in 1999 with Nicolas Cage , purely because he was in it . We knew nothing about it and we took a punt cos Cage is always good value and the film was incredible- have you seen it ? I will be overjoyed to see Mr Cage again and I will certainly check this out xxxx
Thanks for watching!
Why isnt anyone comparing this to Twin peaks? A northwest murder mystery with supernatural possession? I loved both 💜
I thought the film was really incredible and very interesting can’t take any of the uniqueness away.
The music the sounds Nic Cage of course was on a whole other dimension in the movie would love to see a prequel with longlegs!!
It’s crazy seeing Nicolas Cage playing in a horror movie when he plays a lot of action movies lol
I enjoyed it, but my buddy who was excited walking in left entirely underwhelmed. The story beats were a little too convenient to remain logical, but it was interesting.
Your review got me all excited to watch the movie
I think the reason people use that term is that most of the horror genre is schlock. I personally don't have an issue with it.
The movie was pretty good but a bit of a letdown. It doesn't live up to blackcoat's daughter which should be considered a classic in the genre.
every "elevated horror movie" ive ever tried to watch/have watched wouldve been 100 times better and more impactful as a short film
I’m glad you enjoyed it. I felt there were amazing performances and I feel they’re the reason to watch the film. I felt the soundtrack and atmosphere were great. I just felt the movie was just good and I wanted great. I will definitely revisit it and I hope will discover a love for it because Nic, Miaka and Alicia were Amazing!!!!
I'm very mixed on it still even after having the weekend to sit on it. The first 2/3 are very good. But the final act feels rushed. It feels spoon-fed but also at the same time left me with too many questions.
I felt it was pretty predictable, and I went in blind. I had no expectations going in or hype surrounding the film and still came away a little disappointed. I was shocked to see my theater packed for a 1030 showing, though. I had no idea the general audience even knew this existed. Which is cool.
Overall, I enjoyed it. I give it a solid B.
Watched it at my local drive in
I loved this movie from the jump to the credits. I squirmed in my jeans so much I went down a pants size.
Good to hear! Sounds like you had your longlegs on!
It’s an excellent movie
Or they use our HORROR as SUSPENSE in the end it's all HORROR great putting them right Justin and long legs is a really good HORROR
Good review and cool video Pizowell!👉🙂👈
Glad you liked it!
It was alright. I didnt like the ending much.
This movie was lame-ville. Very disappointed.
Were not aloud to just say a movies good in a genre or it sucks ass??
It was a poor film
