I am so excited about this. I love that you’re actively exploring how to find creativity, and done so candidly. Like it might seem obvious to others that an artist is creative, which they are, but it’s not always some passive entity. Sometimes we gotta excavate for it. And yes, even going to the aquarium for inspiration takes practice! Figuring out how to interpret inspiration and translate it takes practice. I love this, and can’t wait to see more. I really like this video format! Finding inspiration and "being creative" is definitely a muscle that needs to be exercised. Ive found it really helpful to keep a list of all the ideas that come to you, no matter how small. Preferably the list will be like on your phone or someplace you can access it at all times. You never know which idea might spiral into something else, or what might seem insignificant at first, but after coming back to it later, is a great idea!
I started studying what artists with completely different style than mine were doing and listening to them explaining their process, it helped me so so much with creativity. I always felt like i was able to draw but that it didn't make me an "artist". Lately i saw on youtube a woman explaining her process when drawing and painting abstract art, which i used to put in the "this is too pretentious" category and never bothered to study. Something really clicked in me when she started talking about repetitions in nature (which i noticed in your fish videos) and i realized that the way i was observing things around me was so different, and too realistic maybe. "those are leafs, those are birds" etc... but the woman i saw was more looking at the big picture. The way things move together in the same pattern or motion, how much repetition was everywhere. Basically she ended up drawing circles in different thickness and sizes, mor or less close together xD but that really really helped me with observation, composition, and just letting go. I thing i wanted so badly to make "things that look like something" that it closed my mind a bit too much. It helped me doing more surrealist art which was always one of my goal but i could never come up with good ideas.
All this to say don't hesitate to learn from other artists' thought and art process, even more so artists with very different styles ! could even be artist using photography, filming, sculpting etc, it could help so much !

I heavily relate to the struggle of finding ideas and feeling creative. It feels like hitting a wall when I try to tell people about the struggle, and they think I’m crazy cause to them I AM creative. People sure do love realism, but I want to be more than just a human printer, I want to make something of my own! My brain definitely feels empty often when I try.
Can’t wait for the next video tho lol, I love it when people talk about their hurdles and how they’re actively trying different things and building on their process to get over or around them, so thanks for taking us along!

OH MY GOSH?! This this THIS!!!!! Finally, I have someone who expressed exactly what I feel like I have been lacking in my own art journey. I can copy.. but I can’t ✨create✨ I can see something and be SO inspired, I have inklings of ideas, but to get it out in the physical world is so hard for me. And my ADHD does not help. Lol The commitment to a big elaborate piece is tough. I wanna convey things I feel in one sitting. 😅
ive been asking myself this question a lot for years, and i think the answer i've come to is just. learn how to make it fun. whatever that means for you, prioritize having fun while you create. for me, that means bright colors and an easily portable "creation kit" (for me, it's a clipboard with pieces i've been working on, a pencil bag with a fistful of somewhat random, low-mess supplies, and a few pens). i think it might be worth trying to do that while you're in the aquarium. draw the fish while you're there. use random supplies, use colors you love, dont worry about the end result. my philosophy is that if i have fun making it, the end piece will inherently have value to me, and therefore be "good"

I can very much relate to the things you talked about in this video. I know that what's most important is how you feel about your process, but for what it's worth, I have literally been awestruck by your creativity with your character design sketchbook spreads. You come up with things I'd have never thought of, and it's so fun to watch!
Regarding filming/photographing animals, I was in zoo education for well over a decade and I still take pictures of the signage at zoos when I don't know what species I'm looking at. It's super helpful, especially for birds and fish, to have something to reference later on :)

The Florida Aquarium is one of my favorite places ever!! If you ever want a nice chill aquarium to visit go check out the Mote Marine Laboratory. Smaller aquarium but the volunteers there are super great and informational. (Coming from a volunteer lol) Grew up going there and its great. Pick a weekday and if you get lucky it will be just you in the aquarium to sit and draw! I love doing that :)

OH!! I SEE NOW!! For me personally, drawing from memory makes it so much easier to use inspiration without copying it. Because you already know how to draw it so you can do more with it. Its easier to become reliant on copying photos because we feel less likely to fail or have error to them, but we need to also attempt to make things up with our little brain cells lol. (I mean this not at all in a mean way btw) Even if its drawing fishies at different poses or angles, or interacting with each other, theres a whole vortex of inspo to draw from just attempting to make things from memory. (Im only nine minutes in so im not sure if youve covered more on this or-)
EDIT (17 mins in): I get that feeling a LOT too!! I just realized when I become inspired, especially on the go, i get that same itchi-ness that I want to draw SOMETHING but nothing will come out, like everything is just moving too fast or like too fleeting to put together. I really want to see how you might accomplish getting past this feeling if you ever do. Listening to you toalk about the inspiration you gathered makes me inspired to take my own photography and make soemthing from it.
Edit 2 (27 mins in):My only note is that nothing is original, but your take on drawing it and freeing it through your expression is entirely unique. Ive struggled for a long time with similar things as you are speaking about, and I feel like I can introspectively pick what you've experienced, pick it apart, and learn what I want to do. I think the whole thing that's going on here is wanting to take control of that creative flow and being able to use it effectively. Its definitely not easy, and is a skill we all have to hone and learn. There's a definite helplessness that accompanies the feeling of being inspired but not being able to like.... move your pencil to make it flow. Like being almost overwhelmed but also underwhelmed at the same time? For me its like i want to represent everything i'm feeling through symbolism and colors and movements somehow??? Its so frustrating and I hope some of my words perhaps make some sense to what its like and some of you agree.
Through this video, I could be imaginative in the approach of species and their inhibition of their places they travel to and imagining their visions (made up) to attract their sense of belonging.

I think it's cool that you're trying to get out of your confort zone and try to find your own ideas more. I think it's going to become more natural and easy over time, even if now it feels weird and indecisive. And the video style was very interesting, would love to see sequels to this video!
Ahh this is such a fun idea I feel like so much art talk focuses on technique and method rather than creativity in itself! I've been reading a lot about art theory recently so here's my two cents about making stuff (please take with a grain of salt): often the instant thought after inspiration is composition so maybe take a step back from that and instead of 'what do I visualise when I felt interested in the fishes movement' think more broadly 'how do I get that feeling onto paper?' then experiment: maybe try mark making or layering paper and plastic or whatever. Then circle back to composition afterwards. Get braindump thoughts and ideas out whilst sketching and then collect them up into an interpretation or like a big cool idea after.
I feel like this made absolutely no sense (sorry!) but yes creativity is Hard!!!

I always have the "urge" to make art but hen find myself staring at a blank page because I just can't come up with anything despite feeling so inspired. I have been struggling with a lot of similar things as you regarding art stuff, it’s nice hearing someone who’s able to put it into words. I have been thinking about going to my zoo and exploring and just taking things in. I know living life and experiencing things are great ways to grow with your art. it’s something I’ve been meaning to do for a while now but haven’t had to courage to do so. The image you showed in the beginning of the vid of the aquarium is a wierd vision i see frequently. Its sloghtly mire turquoise and theres a child and adult there. Ajd the water has silhouettes if i guess marije animals but they dhift and move like a rorschach test. Idk why im yelling you but it caught me off guard with its similarity.

I really love artist process videos and this was a perspective/technique that I can't wait to try. The footage of the aquarium was gorgeous and makes me want to draw ASAP! For me, seeing in depth brainstorming and thumbnailing is just as interesting as watching the process of a finished piece. I suspect I'm not the only one that feels this way and am hoping you'll do more of these types of videos.
I'm glad you're coming at this with a growth mindset and easing in since this is not a simple straightforward goal. You mentioned not feeling satisfied yet, which makes sense because it's the early stages, but I have a good feeling you will see the progress in your finished piece. I have to say, this is phenomenal. I know exactly what you mean where you feel the creativity and inspiration inside you ready to make art, but not knowing how to do it. Maybe I can try to explore my creativity with you. I really hope you continue to document this process. watching you work and share your process of trying to figure it out is really inspiring to me, when so much of the time it feels so impossible to get from one side of relying on reference to developing the creativity aspect

Love this. It’s so real. Just an idea - what if you sat down and forced out a list of 50-75 ideas of “original” art after your trip to the aquarium? Let them suck. Then cross out the ones you aren’t inspired by and do thumbnail sketches of the three the make you most excited? Keep on keepin’ on. You’re doing great.

So cool! I think there‘s nothing whatsoever wrong with simply painting from screenshots of your videos! 🎉 Especially since this is what you actually want to do - if you stifle that genuine wish, aren‘t you stifling the creative impulse itself? And since creativity mostly hits us while we‘re working on art, I think those paintings from the video are going to spark more ideas.
And to go with your movement idea: how about doing a triptych that displays the different stages of those movements? ❤
i so appreciate the sentiment and encouragement!! i definitely have no issue with copying the screenshots, but that's pretty much exact habit i'm trying to train myself away from! i want to be able to do more creatively! i wouldn't say that that's stifling any creativity, or even that it's what i actually WANT to do- it's just what i'm used to!

I think you liking your subject is meaning enough so don’t worry and don’t overthink it. I also found this video very interesting as I don’t feel a lot of artists go into the idea or what’s behind the art often so it’s great to see
this is a specific are of my art i want to work on because i've defintiely identified it as something holding me back from certain goals! liking something is definitely enough reason for me to draw it, but not necessarily enough for me to make a whole cohesive series which is the ultimate goal!
I loved this I was thinking of making a set of videos of "searching for inspiration". Your feelings of your adventure night be fun to explore as nonrepresentational art as backgrounds, then the fish that made you feel that way as a subject might be cool to explore. Colors and winding lines juxtaposed with solid references would be wonderful!

Hey al, I wanna start by saying that I LOVED this video and thank you for making this, I am someone struggling with creativity as well, I have MAJOR issues with creating something of "my own" and seeing you tackle this using different methods that don't feel natural to you makes me wanna try it too... I think for us "photo copyers" it's a real issue to find the courage to just MAKE stuff and I understand how hard it is
I love this type of format of you just talking about what's on your mind, slightly "deeper" content about deeper issues. It's making me reflect too, I just came back from a Scuba diving trip in Phuket Thailand, and I LIVED the experience of being among the wonderful fish and sharks and the coral reefs colors left a lasting impression on me, and I wanna try something like you did, with the footage that I took from my dives. This is a great first video and I'm so excited for this series! I mainly do abstract work myself and I do a lot of it from inspiration by patterns in nature (flocks of birds, seeds or petals in a flower, etc). Something I do to jumpstart my inspiration is to make a playlist. I don't know why but music helps my brain achieve a flow state and make it easier to focus (I have ADHD so it can be very difficult) 😊❤ good luck to you!!!

I really enjoyed watching this video a lot! I liked the format of showing bits and pieces of the aquarium visit; the footage was beautiful! Especially you standing in front of the aquarium backdrops, it translated that inspiration you had very well I think! I liked that you were honest about your struggles with finding inspiration and that you took us along in this first step of doing deeper research into what you want to create. I recognise being stuck inside my head, wanting to create something meaningful but having difficulty with going deeper than the surface level of what you see in front of you. I thought the sketches and explanations in the end were very helpful! I would love to see more video's like this!
PS: I've been wanting to go to the zoo with my camera and draw for a while now and it is good to know that that experience may be more idyllic in my head than the real experience is going to be

This is WONDERFUL!! Youu are on the right track - KEEP GOING!! You are listening to your passion, which is sea life and fish. It's going to come from there. When you were expressing how it was making you feel , I felt it!! You found it. You just have to keep going with it and listen to your heart and listen to what your feelings are telling you. I know that sounds kind of vague but that's really it. The fish and thier envirnment speaks to you and you're just struggling with interpreting it...just stay on that path because the signs will start to appear and you will be able to paint it. Keep talking about it, reading, researching and it will come. Doodle daily on it so that you are forever in communication with ''ita. This video is very inspiring too. I LOVE drawing trees and being amongst them. As as young child I was always climbing them and now I want to learn to paint them . I too, have an idea for an art piece but not sure where to begin. I'm gonna follow your lead on this one and just put myself in the space of trees and see how I'm being spoken to , in that experience. Can't wait for your next video - I'm soooo pumped for you !!! 🙂

It is so great to see another person struggle with this! I do not know how to capture a feeling in a piece. I am also someone who typically draws/paints the reference as it is with little interpretation, because I just don't have the practice to do it any other way. Really interested in what steps you take, and what works for you.
I finally found you! I used to binge watch all your sketchbook tours and started watching you regularly but then i don't know what happened! I distinctly remembered your tshirt art video and hoped I'd find your video and I just remembered your channel's name. Hope you're doing well, I'll get to watching all the videos that I have missed.
Fascinating video, very honest and revealing of how you think. Looking forward to seeing more steps and what comes out of the project. Inspiration is difficult maybe starting something with as a smaller piece of work exploring one aspect/subject you may be struck/identify what you want to do. Movement is hard to convey and particularly many independent layers and modes of movement. Movement shown photography with longer exposures/motion blur but not sure how to approach as a painting.

When you said you were going to expose yourself to fish, I took that literally and thought you were going to flash a bunch of fish and then make art about the experience. What a wild way to find creativity that would be!
On a more serious note, I wish you the best in your journey to creating cohesive pieces. I made a series that was in a gallery show and I’ve been struggling to reignite that passion I had when making that series.
I think it could be rather impactful to paint a portrait of you looking at the fish searching for answers. I think it’s a relatively powerful and relatable experience to stare deeply into nature hoping that it will magically give you an answer to all your problems. Just some food for thought!

I enjoyed seeing your thought process and exploration of a topic and your sketchbook brainstorming (which, as you said yourself, does not need to be finished or good and you don't even need to like it or feel any way about it... it's just a part of the process and you might find it interesting to look at later-or not lol). The candid thoughts on your journey are nice to see, especially when you feel like you are starting from ground zero on developing your creativity muscle. OK, I both relate to this issue and don't at the same time. You DID come with at least one original idea there - the figure on the bottom of the ocean with the light and fishes looking from the darkness in. That IS an idea that can be turned into a gorgeous piece.
For me - I feel like I have exactly the opposite problem ( despite the "nothing is original" thing.... it doesn't have to be one of a kind and never-seen--before) - I have too many original ideas and I want to turn them into something material without doing research on how to do that. For me the research part is the long, boring part that literally can kill my "original" idea by making me forget it in the process of research.
I can definitely say I've seen people make series of pieces based on just fish - maybe not aquarium fish but I'd imagine that's also doable. And here's the other thing - I think you mentioned something like you don't want to necessarily put meaning into your pieces - you don't have to. Nobody has to. Many times when I watch people analyze classic pieces of the big classic painters I'm wondering if the artist could be alive and face-to-face with the person analyzing would they perhaps go "yeah, no, I didn't MEAN any of it, I just felt like it." Especially for abstract art.
Just... don't try too hard to be perfect and come up with genius "purely-original" things.... you literally had 5-6 pieces thumbnailed/sketched just on those two pages. You do need to have fun even when you want to be serious with it.

I would love to see you actually give the live painting reaction thing a go. Even if it *is* abstract, I think there's so much inspiration to then take from the textures and gestural marks that you would have made from responding to your footage with paint and brushes. It might give you that extra bit of expression or get you closer to finding the ideas that you want to move towards. :- )

I think it’s super cool that you are exploring this whole aspect of yourself. And it’ll be great to watch you figure it out! I think it’s such an individualistic process and that’s what makes it so hard. There are no guides to follow. I find myself in a similar state but my approach is different and I love that everyone “needs” to go about it in their unique way. Good luck with your explorations! And I will recommend a book - The Creative Act by Rick Rubin. 🐠🐡🐟 PS. Fish are so cool!

thanks for sharing your process. To me it seems you would benefit from doing close-up studies for textures and details and then composition studies for the visual information/clutter part that you talked about. I think from these studies you can start and eventually that feeling of freedom from being small will bleed into the art

Maybe we'll see you do a huge neon painting with multiple layers of fish and foliage at some point. 😉 Idk of the needs to be a higher meaning or message for art series than just a theme -- this video alone could be turned to a series of sea inspired paintings on embracing diversity.
"theme" is probably a better way of putting it!! some sort of cohesion!!

Also, my American diving instructor told me there were really cool diving sites around Florida (I think,maybe it was elsewhere you can look it up) and I don't know if you've tried it before, but scuba diving in coral reefs will literally BLOW YOUR MIND if you love aquariums :) maybe try it !
If you accept requests: since I found you through your wonderful portraits doing the 100 heads challenge, it would be so so awesome if you could combine that with the fishes and water plants: do you think you could draw each fish and plant as a person (I mean what they would look like if they were people)?
i get the feeling of not being able to fully represent your feelings in paper, specially with nature. I'm always frustrated that i can't represent the beauty and flowing movement and the ethereal undertones of it in paper when i try to draw nature
I have similar feelings about having specific thoughts behind my art! It’s hard for me to make art with a message that doesn’t come off as super cheesy and I’m working on being able to do that better. I want my art to make people feel something beyond “oh that’s pretty/cute”
so real!!! i don't need to give viewers an existential crisis when they see my art but i'd also like for there to a reason for them to look at it/think about it for longer than 5 seconds!
I just did some research on the availability of the aquariums and zoos and places where you can go see the animals in my city and they all seem to be quite abandoned, by recent reviews, wich is sad... Anyways, your video gave ne so much inspiration, it's so cool!

Something that always helped me in the beginning was to note what I want to put into an illustration and my brain would actively try to create something

Hey! You said something about being sad that you wouldn’t be able to know what kind of fish you saw and so you wouldn’t be able to look them up to reference .. if you have an iPhone, your photos info button might have recognized some of the species .. or it might give you clues to what they are! I’m not sure if other brands of phones do this, but I figured I’d share! 🐠
You should try abstract art sometimes if you haven't already, i feel like just putting literal scribbles and line in the oage makes you let go nore easily and feel more free to represent feelings in lines and forms, no actual figures
this is crazy because I was at the zoo yesterday and I was going to do some drawings and paintings of the photos I took.
last time I was visiting a zoo, alone, it was the hottest day of the summer, I mean, really really hot, and almost every animal was sleeping, lying around or dozing off, lol, that was really interesting, I have lots of pictures with sleeping animals... not exactly what I was going for but also very inspiring and nice. and very cute sometimes. 😁☺ I struggled too with the heat, and the camera and the lens was new to me so that was also a struggle. Won't forget that ever. 😉
edit: I think I get you mean a different kind of struggle but that was just to explain what happened to me there, I do that sometimes, I watch the video without the voice than I watch it again, listening. so that was just a coincidence, but I get what you mean, I think. ;-)

I somewhat understand what you’re trying to saying it’s a really hard feeling to articulate. For me it feels like I’m striving for something contradictory. But anyway I did like this style of video I’m sure once you find your groove with how much you want to film outside it’ll flow more comfortably for you.

I draw ventart🤗and a lot of the time it looks VERY different or it comes out not resembling anything. I often ask what would whatever I’m going thru look like? Once I was so confused that I didn’t know what/how to feel. So I drew something the didn’t look like anything. A strange face contorted by bulbous eyes all going different directions while the background was scratched black with crazy lines! It’s a confusing piece for a confusing time! I hope this helps(if u get to this haha)😅☺️✨
