    I was a LVTP5, mechanic back in 1969, with 5th Mar Div, before the Div. was disbanded. The LVTP7 was being tested there at Camp Pendleton's, at DelMar. Never got to work on one since they brought 1stMar Div tracks back to the states and as a new mechanic just out of school, I was sent to work at the Camp Pendleton Brig, I later work at the Army Stockade in Da Nang, after it was turned over to them by the Marines as the Marines Corp was standing down in Vietnam. Ending my time in the Corp, I worked at the Brig in Quantico.

    I was a 1833 crewman/crew chief from 1986 to 1992. The M85 .50 caliber was trash. They were probably free from the army. That said the mark 19 and M2HB was a welcome and needed upgrade.

    It sounds weird hearing someone call it a double AAv7 we just call them tracks or AAVs

    During falklands war one was knocked out by British Royal Marines. Aluminium a poor choice as has a lower melting temperature before can’t can’t as much abuse as steel. Reason it can’t take mines is because it’s has a flat bottom to do amphibious operations. An amphibious vehicle not going to have the same protection, firepower and speed/ performance such as a Bradley’s as Bradley’s don’t have the amphibious side to them. The replacement the expedition fighting vehicle info was inaccurate as issues with the spirally cost, it not working like it was meant to, the continued breakdowns/ malfunctions and even more work needed to get it where it needed to be with no end in sight.

      no vehicle was knocked out in the Falklands, the Marines' CG and LAW66 shots went wide, the three Amtracs of the vanguard survived, minor bullet damage in the periscope and hull of vehicle number 7, no casualties

    Ok, the only reason any of these have sank was because someone screwed up. Every time I’ve read about it was because somebody screwed up by the numbers. The vehicle has four bilge pumps, and oddly enough, four hull plugs. If you drove off a transport into the ocean with those four hull plugs removed? You would not immediately sink. If all four of your bilge pumps were nonfunctional ? You would not immediately sink. It takes so many screw ups to sink an AAV it makes me wonder about how badly training must become. It always a wake up call to command. I was crew chief of an AAVP7A1 when things went south. It was a pre-deployment operation in 1991 I think. The propulsion jets went out, it’s the propeller looking thinks above the tracks in the rear of the vehicle, so we switched to using just the tracks. It’s slower but it can do in a pinch, that means using the tracks to slowly head to the beach… then the driver said every gear but 1st was not responding. The waves were heavy and we were not able to make headway in 1st gear. The engine turbo blew a gasket and started blowing exhaust fumes into the troop compartment.. So many things went wrong that night, but no one died. The infantry was offloaded into a naval small boat, which left room for us to use a boat hook to steer the malfunctioning jets. We got to the beach and no one was injured. That was a stressful night. I say this because when one of these sinks? It means someone screwed up. It’s not a lack of maintenance. Everything mechanical went wrong the night I mentioned. When one of these sinks it’s because people screwed up. The vehicle, old as it is, is solid.

      Wow. I was wondering how an amphibious vehicle can just sink seemingly without taking any major damage.

    • @arthurcuelho7279
      @arthurcuelho7279 Před 8 měsíci

      @@skilledartist5008 one sinking I’m familiar with is one with all four hull plugs left out and could not get it back on land in time, no injuries. The others I’ve heard of all involve going off the back of the ship with a hatch open, in which case they sink fast.

    Great video, but I was waiting for the C-4 charge to explode and it didn't happen. I was in Vietnam in 1965 and we were the first Marines to land in Chu Lai, which was very exciting for several reasons. My last two years I was at Camp Lejeune with the LVT-E1 Mine Clearance company and that was a very interesting time for me. Back then there were no videos of LVT-E1 clearing mine fields, and I have always wished that somebody had done one. We live in a different time now!
