Imagine if, with Obi-Wan hanging on for dear life after being Force-pushed by Darth Maul to end their fight, Maul walks away because the war around him is lost. Obi-Wan jumps out of the hole and cradles Qui-Gon's lifeless body in his arms. Now, we have a setup for Obi-Wan's rivalry with Maul through the other two films. Maul killed his mentor, and Obi-Wan wasn't strong enough to kill Maul, and Maul will only become more powerful in the Dark Side. Now, we have something to look forward to, and we're rooted in Obi-Wan's desire to want to fight Maul again. Instead, what we got was George inventing a new villain in the second movie then inventing another new villain in the third movie because he wanted to kill the second new villain early in the third movie despite this second villain showing he's so powerful that he can stand up to Yoda. It just doesn't make sense.

Also doesn’t help that there was a live action show on Coruscant that would seemingly explain more stuff and had like 80 episodes planned out but then they just never made it lol. Regardless, it still baffles me that Lucas would make a trilogy that would cryptically allude to shit like “Cypher Diaz” and expected anybody to have a reaction other than annoyance and confusion.

A big reason people like the prequels and then turn around and call the sequels even worse, even though they're the same, is because they use well-established characters. While the sequels and prequels both struggle with many of the same elements, the prequels already have an advantage because the audience is watching these like, "Look, that's the guy I know. Exactly. I am tired though of fans who claim the Clone Wars somehow "redeems" the prequels, as if a failed movie can some how be made better by adding on supplementary material to make up for poor screenwriting decisions. The prequels could have been much better. I see Jude Law as a young Obi-wan aside an actor more resembling Sebastian Shaw (That's one benefit The Clone Wars had--Anakin's model looked more like something that could grow up into the unmasked Vader we see at the end of Jedi.), with enough complexity surrounding Anakin's turn so that it felt like an authentic Greek tragedy rather than a recap of the backstory with a fridged wife added into the mix. I would have liked to see more of Anakin struggling not just with the tenants of the Jedi, but also with the the efficacy of the Old Republic as opposed to a rising dictatorial regime (something we see only once in AOTC).

So, why would he want someone important like Jango or Dooku to try and assassinate her themselves? They would likely succeed or end up dying which at least increases the likelihood of his plan failing. Also, how would the Changer girl be able to assassinate Padme without the droid or the bugs? If you did, you would clearly see, why the prequels are superior to the sequels in every aspect other than broad visuals. The prequels tell an actual story with a clear throughline and thought put into it while heavily expanding on the OT without ever conflicting with it. The sequels achieve the exact opposite.

I think that's fair to an extent, but ultimately the movies need to hold up on their own. If you have a movie trilogy, you should be able to understand it just by watching the movies in it. You can't introduce someone to the movies and expect them to watch an entire tv show at the same time to understand it. It's like when people excuse bad film adaptations not explaining important elements of the plot properly because "it's explained in the books". The movie should be able to function on its own. If these films don't make sense without watching the TV show, they failed.

I think Palpatine, Maul and Grievous would be incredibly interesting if they were exclusively focused on as the main trio of villains because each one slots into a different part of the hierarchy. Grievous is the droid general guy, Maul is some kind of Sith assassin being sent around by Palpatine directly, and Palpatine is the big bad. It would be a lot more satisfying if by the time we get to episode 3, Maul is the one being decapitated by Anakin in front of Palpatine, as we'd actually have some kind of weight attached to the moment by that point from two movies of this character being present. Hell, he could have been the guy to not only kill Qui-Gon, but take Anakin's hand as well. At least that way we'd understand Anakin having some level of internal struggle about whether or not to execute the literally disarmed guy on his knees. Maybe work Maul's subplot about getting robot legs from the clone wars show into the second movie or something so the phantom menace still keeps its whole climax, I dunno

    • @JayJaycubbs
      @JayJaycubbs Před rokem +3

That's total bullshit. Fans like him because unlike most of the other villains in the series, Dooku had a more complex goal that isn't "take over the galaxy for personal gain" like Palpatine. He was dissatisfied with the Jedi and how corrupt and dogmatic they had become, as well as the Republic as a whole since they weren't helping all those in need. Hence why the Separatist movement started because a lot of systems wanted a change in leadership and how the galaxy should operate for the good of everyone, and Dooku became a major figurehead for that movement because he wanted to cleanse and rebuild the Republic as well as rebuild the Jedi Order since they were blinded by the obvious snake in the room, being Sidious.
This is all established in Episode 2 with his talk with Obi-Wan, stating that even Qui-Gon was wise enough to see just how bloated the Jedi had become, given that he was once Dooku's apprentice. And plus this is shown in his actions in 2, since he isn't purely reliant on hatred or rage when in combat like other Sith (notice how he doesn't have the yellow Sith Eyes that Maul, Palps and Anakin have in 1 and 3, or how his use of force lightning is more flowing and direct and not chaotic and stormy like Palpatine's). He's a more calculated duelist who prefers to taunt his opponents, and even when he defeats Anakin and Obi-Wan, he has a look of despair and/or regret, which is contrary to how Maul acted after killing Qui-Gon. Showing that even though he was victorious in that moment, he took no solace in it and he actually did have some level of respect for them as they were both his former peers.
Sure it's very very subtle and the movies could've had more scenes of him explaining his distaste for the Republic, but it does exist in the movies regardless. And no, I'm not pulling this from Clone Wars or any external sources if that's what you're gonna assume as I know next to nothing about either of those

I’d say that my main criticism for Attack of the Clones is that there’s a lack of connective tissue between the events that happen, and that there was a lot of scenes that were cut that should’ve been in the film. One of them being a scene where Obi-Wan talks to the librarian in the temple, and she explains Dooku’s origins and how he had a falling out with the Jedi and the Republic. I think they should have kept that scene in as it does give Dooku’s character more depth, but I guess it was cut out because the movie was already very long and George probably wanted Dooku’s character to be a mystery until the third act

You completely dropped the ball on your “Why is Anikan killing Dooku seen as evil?” It was seen as evil because Dooku had his hands cut off and was no longer a threat. Meaning Anikan essentially executed a surrendering prisoner, which is a war crime I believe.

A few things that have occurred to me over time about the overarching story of the Prequels:
    1) not sure this was intentional, but in context, the Jedi being clueless about the ins and outs of personal relationships and familial emotion is a direct result of their order having become so insular in the pursuit of the 'cosmic' Force. Their highest members literally live on a pedestal and they have no idea what life is like for normal people.
    2) I think Palpatine doesn't have clairvoyance, he's just really good at juggling multiple balls at once and adapting on the fly. And unlike the Jedi, he understands people and although he uses them like they're his tools, he understands human nature in a way that the Jedi *never* could. He is a master manipulator and a liar, so even when he tells the truth, it's in pursuit of his own goals.
    3) the reason Qui-Gon wasn't on the Jedi Council was because he was an outlier in the order and not rigidly orthodox with his views of the 'living' Force. He understood the importance of familial connection and could converse and connect with ordinary people. It has been stated by John Williams and strongly implied through the music piece 'Duel of the Fates' that if Qui-Gon Jinn had lived to train Anakin, he would have seen to it that Anakin would have returned to his mother sooner and would never have been vulnerable to the Dark Side or Palpatine's influence.
There's a lot more that could be said. As clumsily told as they are, the overarching story of the Prequels is definitely better than the films are often given credit for.
If the dialogue, directing, acting, and haphazard plotting didn't drag them down, the PT would be as revered by film nerds as much as Star Wars Prequel fans.
Edit: can't spell Palpatine's name right lol

All those things you mention are aspects that a good writer & director would have been able to get across to the viewer. Rather than this bland film that relies on special effects & John Williams rather than good storytelling & acting.

I really don't think the Ivory Tower Jedi Council interpretation was intentional, because within the context of the story, they're proven completely right.
They correctly call that Anakin is a poor candidate for Jedi training and refuse to train him, only caving when Obi-Wan forces the issue by threatening to train Anakin himself if the Order won't. And the one time, as far as they know, that they compromise on their policy of recruiting toddlers to be repressed warrior monks and allow someone who's actually old enough to say "no" into the Order, he snaps and murders everyone. The rest of the Jedi, meanwhile, all presumably recruited as babies, do not snap and murder everyone, and most seem to be reasonably well-adjusted, if bland and uptight. If anything, the story validates their viewpoint. The way the story is framed, the creepy, insular council of inscrutable, emotionless religious zealots are _the voices of reason._
Also, Lucas openly compared the dialogue to background music and was much more interested in directing the CGI than the actors, several of whom have since said that they were given almost zero direction and didn't always know what their character was doing in a scene, what was going on in the story, what their motivations were or even where to _look._
