    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  Před rokem

      Thank you Denis! Drones often provide a perspective when you can't tell the story any other way. We love having ours for those situations, when we're able to use it. Sometimes landowner restrictions or even wind conditions keep us from doing so. For example, as I type this we're in a Florida State Park where drone use is prohibited. We planned to get around that by launching and landing from our kayak on the water adjacent to the park; however, this morning's wind conditions are preventing that, too.

      Yep, if we had our druthers we would've preferred to be in the state park campground, although it was a very nice stay at the KOA. If you don't need to be concerned about tree canopy as we do, it's a no-brainer in our opinion.

  • @gorrdd
    @gorrdd Před rokem +2

    Thanks Marc. That was a completely different dynamic than the Fort Sumter surrender, you reported on last week. They were simply outgunned this week.
    Brick fortifications just don't make it. They needed heavy iron plating backed by iron reinforced concrete... together with long range mortars to take out the attacking ships. They didn't have either and were not prepared.
    Cannons on embattlements are line of sight and can be taken out with enough fire power. However, mortars can be hidden and protected.
    Standard mortar ball is pretty hard to hit a moving ship. But if they fired molten lead and iron debris they can cause the wooden ships to burn with just a few pieces hitting the targets... especially if they had sails.
    This is actually a very old technique that the Romans used on their galleys at close range. But perfecting the technique at longer range might have saved some of the ports.
    You must be a Civil war buff, as you have hit a few Civil War naval historic sites along the east coast.
    Downtown Savannah is really beautiful to take in. There is really allot of period architecture to see. And I loved seeing the lower level historic warf area of Savannah.
    You had allot to cover and I would have enjoyed seeing more of the things that were only briefly viewed. I felt that this was more of a taster than a review.
    We got lots of cannons though and that helped😉!🤣💨
    Gord

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  Před rokem +1

      Another fascinating insight, Gord -- thank you for that. I've truly never been a Civil War buff in the strictest sense of the word. However, you know that I love history in all its forms. These sites just happen to coincide with our chosen destinations this year down the eastern seaboard.
      As for the depth of content, we face challenges at this time of year when the days get shorter. We only have one full day per week to explore: Saturdays. Otherwise, we do all of our filming and exploration after business hours as I'm working from the RV Monday-Friday. When the days get shorter, that minimizes our midweek opportunities -- especially after the clock shift to Standard Time.

Right now we're in a gorgeous state park with pristine undeveloped beaches on the Gulf of Mexico, whereas the remainder of the shoreline here is full of high-rise condos. We specifically included the campground at Fort McAllister in the video precisely for those folks not bound by the same restrictions we face, for it's positively gorgeous.
