I actually had this happen when I was standing 10 yards away from one. Only difference was it was a beastly cold winter morning at 5:45am, dark as all get out, and I was all alone at our local airport about 3 miles from town. I had sent the 5:30 am flight off and was outside getting the temperature for the local weather observation (before computers and automated systems were in place) and paused to look at the airport lights and the sun light just starting to glow on the horizon... I felt the ground vibrate and heard a sliding, mud sucking sound just behind me and to my left.. I turned and nearly jumped out of my skin! Here in the pre-dawn darkness was a submarine surfacing in the middle of the prairie! It took me a minute to figure out that it was the empty jet fuel tank that had floated up.... I was awake for class that morning!
That would definitely shake off the cobwebs.

Looks like the pilot of the Russian Sub made a wrong turn.
After all that time it just crawled out.

So basically this was a 24,000 gallon steel balloon that was floating on an underground river. That's pretty cool.
And hense why tanks must now be valted for inspection. Unless their vault had been breached this wouldn't have happened

Some inground pools have a small sump or well (not sure what to call it) so that you can pump ground water out from underneath the pool if it is emptied for servicing.

The concrete looked like a recent repair or installation. No fuel and wet grounds will pop them out. Happens all the time to swimming pools here in FL.

He put in two 20,000 gallon diesel tanks, but would only keep about 4,000 in each one and wouldn't order for a refuel until the last minute. We got one of those toadstrangler spring Midwestern storms while he was low and up she came.

Big empty fiberglass tank became a huge float in that water-soaked ground.
My grandfather used to replace the metal ones with fiber glass ones. He already said that if you have too much air in the tank it would pop up like a submarine. Damn he was right.
I wonder what types of conditions make something like that happen. That was crazy.

Ground water! A tank is like a boat...it will float if it is in water and even partially empty. Gasoline is lighter than water, so if the ground gets saturated the tank is always at least slightly buoyant. As it is drained it can become quite forcefully lifted. What is cool about this video is that it caught the tank bursting through the ground. I love the clever remarks below. As for me, I am an engineer... soooooo...
A very neat way for a gas tank to report a low fuel level witthout any modern electronics.
A "Low fuel level" is never an excuse to come to the surface. Then again, ... being a submarine ....
