- This spell is probably the most broken in patch 5, especially when paired with a thrower build. Nearly infinite fire damage and it's completely free too...

First up is Soul Branding. Soul Branding is a Bonus Action only available to Minthara which increases the target’s movement speed by 1.5 meters and its next attack deals an additional 2d4 +1 fire damage. This condition ends upon landing a successful attack, otherwise it lasts 3 turns.
However, what makes this actually incredibly overpowered is that when used on a thrower, Soul Branding does not end after a throw, and the throw gets the bonus fire damage each time. This is essentially bonus fire damage on up to seven attacks on turn 1, and each with the potential to crit. And even after the first round of throws on the thrower, Minthara can cast Soul Branding on another thrower and both of them can have Soul Branding at the same time, throwing with bonus fire damage. You could theoretically get 3 throwers all with Soul Branding since it lasts 3 turns and have it up on all 3. It’s pretty insane because you wouldn’t think the fire damage would apply to a thrown weapon, but it does, and it doesn’t get removed when you throw, which makes this incredibly powerful.
Number 2 is using your hirelings to buff your entire party. Go to your camp and talk to Withers to recruit a hireling. Change their class to cleric and when you do, make sure to dump as many points as possible into constitution. The reason for this is because we’re going to cast Warding Bond. Warding Bond grants the target resistance to all damage, which means they take half damage, and grants a +1 bonus to armor class and saving throws. And each time the target takes damage, the spellcaster takes the same amount of damage. So we’ll cast Warding Bond on a character, and then dismiss the hireling after. They will still take half the damage while in camp, and can even die from it, so we want it to last as long as possible. So while leveling up your hireling, make sure to also choose the Tough feat for +2 health points per level, and ability improvement to put even more points into constitution. But besides Warding Bond, this cleric hireling can also be used to cast Protection from Poison which grants Advantage on saving throws against being poisoned and resistance to poison damage - meaning they take only half as much. That’s not all though - the cleric hireling can also cast Death Ward which protects your character from death - the next time damage would reduce it to 0 hit points, it remains conscious with 1 hit point left. Your hireling can also cast Freedom of Movement making it so that difficult terrain cannot slow them down, and they can’t be magically Paralyzed or Restrained. And then there is also Heroes Feast. Heroes’ Feast makes it so that you cannot be Poisoned, Diseased, or Frightened, and it increases your maximum hit points by 12, and they make Wisdom Saving Throws with Advantage. And the craziest part about this spell is that you can cast it 3 times - each one stacking, granting total bonus maximum hit points of 36 to your entire party.
Cleric isn’t the only class that has some amazing Hireling benefits though - you can also go half cleric and half transmutation wizard. You’ll lose out on a Heroes’ Feast, but gain Transmuter’s Stones and Experimental Alchemy. Transmuter’s Stones like Speed which increases the carrier's movement speed by 3 meters and Transmuter Stone: Constitution which grants the carrier Proficiency in Constitution Saving Throws can be extremely beneficial to either get into position or to keep concentration on an important spell. And Experimental Alchemy makes you brew TWO alchemical solutions instead of one when combining extracts. Elixirs are so incredibly powerful in Baldur’s Gate 3 that this is totally worth doing once you get ingredients like Worg Fang to brew Elixir of Bloodlust.
You can also use other companions than hirelings for buffs. Gale for example is the best target for Warding Bond because for some reason he actually heals himself when he’s not an active party member. So if you change his class to cleric, he can be the ideal stay at camp companion for buffs.

huuuuuuuge ups to this guy for just launching right into the list with no stupid 5 minute preamble about nothing
Gale healing is probably because of his exploding orb and not triggering the revival protocol
Thats exactly why it happens. Saves a nuke I guess...
Throwing is one of my favorites, and Nyrulna is always my first stop in Act 3. Now that you can recruit Minthara without destroying the druid grove she is a must have. Great find!
Also give those hires heavy armor mastery to reduce damage.
Something I noticed is often a surprise round will be wasted by the narrator interrupting with "You hurt/killed/farted in general direction of baddie. Consequences!"
Use a dual weapon attack. The first hit procs the narrator, then the second hit interrupts her interruption and it's time for a surprise party 🎉
This is goated advice
alternatively in act 3 you could drop water at their feet and put them in the water robe that heals 1d4 per round
Dude, the Narrator taking away that surprise round when I attack is super annoying.
@@mel-burnes This is brilliant. Lategame, but brilliant.
My dawg I thank you. I’ve been playing a gloomstalker and I could not figure out the inconsistency of why I’d sometimes get the surprise round and sometimes wouldn’t. You are highly appreciated.
This video literally starts with the words “first up is”. I love you
Good callout on mintharas soul branding. Thanks!
I don’t think it’s been patched, but making the Warding Bond user a Cleric 3/Abjuration Wizard X not only helps mitigate the damage further, but the stacks on Arcane Ward don’t reduce like they should, so they’re basically invincible
Wait, what would happen if they also had armor of agathys
@@LazyVideosGAME the damage only happens to a melee attacker, so it would just be like any temp hp
Thank you for actually just getting into the video without 20 minutes of waffle followed by burying the information.
I understand the making items rare to draw attention to their utility argument but id also argue it was more fun for me to find out as my first barb character having both my and his monkey brain with tavern brawler feat kick in and go 👁️👄👁️ was far more rewarding.
Haste change is actually what current D&D 5e rules say, you get only a single additional attack with Hasted Action
Yeah a bunch of these fixes are for things that worked way more powerfully than in DnD.
Except not exactly. Regular Dnd let's you cast one leveled spell a turn. So bonus action spell-action cantrip etc. BG3 doesn't follow this rule so without haste you can still cast 2 spells.
On top of that, haste's extra action in BG3 can be used to cast a spell, in Dnd it cannot. So the haste change keeps casters even stronger than they already should've been while not equally applying that to martials.
I like the haste change, but it maybe should be limited to cantrips only or something rather than any spell also
@@jonfall7941 There's no rule about "leveled spells per turn" in 5E. If you have Action Surge, you can cast two Fireballs no issue, AND a Reaction spell on your turn. The only rule is about Bonus Action spells. If you cast a BA spell, the only other spells on your turn can be Cantrips. That's it.
@@SyruzakTrue, but to his point, hasted actions in 5e can't be used to cast a spell either. The only way I can think of to get 2 leveled spells on your turn in 5e (not including reactions) is action surge. In BG3, even in honor mode, you can still theoretically cast 6 fireballs in a turn (action, quickened spell, action surge, hasted action, bloodlust action, and 2nd quickened spell if thief).
It still needs to not be able to do a spell.
Aid is also amazing spell on a hireling. I did the same thing but i've preferred to have separate transmuter hireling, cause cleric would need as much constitution as possible, while transmuter hireling should have a big bonus to wisdom/medicine (so max wis and dip into rogue for expertise) to be able to brew extra potions reliably
You don’t need health potions or rest to heal your party.
I’ll feed you, baby birds…
Just ask Withers to reclass for 100g and make the character exactly the same and you get full health AND full spell slots / any other slots
So a devilfoil mask thrower party could hit very hard on throws with soul branding. Dwarven thrower, nyrulna and a bound lightning jabber.
Something I need to bring up anout the Honor mode tip: If your three party members are down in combat then there's a good chance that the enemy will stop attacking them. I've had numsrous foghts where all three were down and passed their death saves, but because the enemies wouldn't kill them I couldnt revive them at Withers, I had to sneak in and kill them super wuickly before fleeing combat.
The perilous stakes change is actually so relevant, to the point its arguably useless now
Yeah when I saw it I thought that was the point to use it in bosses. It was how I chunked half Raphael's health with smoke powder barrels and the rune spark bomb
For the second tip, I reccomend respecing the dwarf barbarian hireling (Eldra I think) into a cleric to cast warding bond with due to the dwarf racial feat giving them extra health. (also when casting aid/hero's feast be sure to have your other clerics in range so they can get the health buff as well. Also get the heavy armor master feat (make sure your cleric's subclass gives heavy armor proficiency (Life, Nature, Tempest, War)) and use your other two feats for increases to CON) You can also use the armors that reduce damage taken by 2 (There's 3 heavy ones to my knowledge) to further increase the damage they can take, I'm not sure this affects the person getting hit though. Also light is a permanent buff which is useful for the items that trigger when the target is illuminated.
Notably hirlings who arent in your party dont receive buffs even when they are in range unlike the origin companions. Beyond that, it's kind of wasted effort imo to bother with going too overboard on dmg mitigation for them. If youve just done con to 20 and tough as their feat they're almost always going to have more health than you, so you will die before they would anyway.
@@busty1985 For single long, drawn-out fights, yes. Any healing will make it so they'd die first, plus you can warding bond with multiple characters at once with the same cleric making the cleric take half of the damage for more than one person/summon. I put warding bond on everyone just after a long rest with 2 hireling clerics and there have been a few instances where they died from an aoe damage source hitting multiple people at once.
Another great one mate, keep up the good work :)
Thank you!
Man really said "Wjarding Bond"
I didn't like the returning pike the one time I used it. When it comes back, it replaces the equipped melee weapon, which was a very unpleasant surprise when Karlach's Everburn blade disappeared out of her hands just as all the enemies got into face-slapping range.
Can actually be a good thing if you build your character around it. Did a throwing build where I would activate Phalar Aluve shriek, then action surged with a returning weapon. The shriek effect still works even when it isn't actively equipped.
@@V1rtualFlod Not anymore
yeah in a way can be bad... but in other situations like when someone disarmed you then you just throw that pike and already get in your hands! :S
@@V1rtualFlod I was playing a thrower with dual wield and found if you equip the throwing spear in your off hand, that's where it returns.
Throwing builds are still incredibly strong. Busted, even. I'm rolling honour mode almost entirely thanks to my Throwbarian 😂
Bonecloak does keep trading with you as long as she is in the underdark, even if you give the nobelstalk to her husband, which - at least on honour mode, you should do, because of her crazy pricing. She deserves no better. And, it's funny, but Phalar Aluve, while nerved, is STILL one of the best utility sword in the game. Additional damage to several targets for 5 rounds, for ALL of your damage dealers, for only one singular action point - is incredible value. On top of that the debuff is crazzy good, and helps your CC's a LOT.
You only need to do a partial full rest in camp to reset vendors btw.
"what do you mean you dont cast mage armour protection from poision longstrider death ward freedom of movement aid heros feast on all of your minions?" (kissing the minions good night)
Cleric hirelings can also use heavy armor master to lower the damage they receive. I also like multi classing them with spore druid for more temp health
I like the think that the pig head and meat ISNT from the animal you knocked out, but that you are infact just mugging some pig that was carrying his lunch.
I use 3 hirelings for buffing, a transmutation wizard for potions, long strider and stones. Set the wizards wisdom to max and get the medicine proficiency as you have to pass a medicine check to get double potions.
A druid for good berries, what you don't use for healing can be used as camp supplys and a level 12 druid gets around 60 berries, so thats 60d4 healing you can use at 1d4 per bonus action how many times have you had a bonus action with nothing to do but you're missing a few hp? Put it to use. They are also handy for a quick heal after combat.
3rd hireling is a cleric for aid, freedom of movement and hero's feast. Pro tip if you group up all your summons in your camp near most of your party and walk over the character thats not near you can buff your whole party with AOE buffs in camps summons included. And who doesnt want all your summons having +25hp from aid and +23hp from heros feast?
If you have the patience long strider can also be added to all your summons as well making them a highly mobile high hp murder army.
If you are struggling for cash you can use astarion to steal from volo when he is in your camp, level up a character rince repeat. You will never be short on a speak with animals potion ever again.....
On your potion wizard, take a level of rogue for expertise in medicine. On the druid, have them take 2 levels of life cleric for the flat healing boost.
Clerics also have Aid... you can have 2 clerics level 12, one cast aid and one cast hero feast for a wopping +37 HP
And with a nice combination of party members(and moving them around) you can also have ALL of your party members and the 2 clerics with those bonuses to help with the warding bond stuff and if the clerics die because of the stacking damage they take from warding bond, you can still revive them through withers or a scroll of rivivify or a spell of rivivify (which they have BTW so if one die you can use the revive spell from the other or if both die you can revive 1 with withers and then the other with the spell or ... well you get my point)
My combination of hirelings is
2 Level 12 clerics
1 Level 6 Trasmutation Wizard, lev 1 rogue (for the expertize in medcine) Lev 5 cleric (for the rest of the goodies)
i was planning 2 ASI and alert for the clerics to help in a certain fight in ACT3 ( is not really needed but welcome nonetheless ) but tough is quite a good option as well
PS: 1 question tho ... i don't get why if someone die in the katrick fight or the last fight they can't get a ress ... i'm was thinking they should be able to, not that i ever needed it
Wow I love when undocumented changes are made to a game with already very obscure mechanics which change depending on the difficulty. Very cool larian
warlock lvl 12 eldritch invocation lifedrinker still has that damage rider thing
I hope larian keeps adding more modifiers every time they make the difficult mode more difficult.
It should be also great to use heavy armour master on the hireling as the shared dmg will get reduced by adamantite armour on all dmg types, and also by this feat if its physical.
Making it last much longer.
4:20 you can still trade with her after giving noblestalk to her husband! All you have to do is try to pick up one of the many things on the table and ground around her and a prompt saying “the trader has no problem with you inspecting these goods, as long as you’re willing to pay for them” or something like that will occur, and then you can initiate the trade!
Soul warding, way of the open fist, barb rage, with tavern brawler for maximum throw damage Minthara build coming right up
I went thief so minthy could use her soul branding twice a turn.
I love ring of flinging and the pike!
They patched the backpack but for 1 gold. But you can still stack the backpack and steal it for a low DC
How do you do this? I tried to put it in the bag but it didn't work
@@RosemaryCemetery so what you do is simple. Go to the trade menu and give them the bag. Do not have the screen where you have the scales on it. Then switch it to the barter screen and fill the bag to the brim.
I see, what item do you use? Alchemy pouch for example only allows for alchemy supplies to be put in it
@@RosemaryCemetery It’s called a backpack trick
Warding bond buffer should take the heavy armor master feat and put them in some ring mail and reduce damage away!
Hireling cleric can also cast aid to boost max hp :)
There’s a new trader bag exploit, sell a bag in trade. Move to bater, drag item items inside of it. Pickpocket it, the DC is only for the bag itself not for its content.
Patched?
I heard this was patched already.
ward is pronounced like war with a d at the end, not waeerding
Do those honor mode changes like haste and warlock's extra attack only not work in honor mode, or are they changes for the whole game? Instead of nerfing haste they should have just taken it off of the twinspell list. I don't think there are that many fights where having 9 attacks would be better than 2 fireballs. Or at least remove the 2 spells per turn. Having a hasted fighter is only better than a hasted wizard against bosses with loads of health.
Only in honour mode atm, others remain unaffected.
Haste hasn't really been nerfed in honour mode. It's just been brought closer to how it's done in 5e, the system BG3 is based on. Same with the warlock extra attacks.
For the Hidden Patch 5 Changes section, are those only in Honourmode or in any difficulty?
Those are all just honor mode difficulty
@@Toyhouze Okay cool cool! Thanks for clarifying!
Gale heals himself prob cause of the bomb… so his bomb doesn’t accidentally go off on the player
Can you still cast perilous stakes on enemies on non honor runs?
I was looking forward to apply Perilous Strikes to an enemy for a while. Now I can't!
you also can use sanctury to be safe! :S
Insanely cool secrets!
* talks about haste being nerfed *
Honor mode with 3 party members sounds fun
yeeehh.. idk about that hireling cheese... i mean, cool that it works and all but concentration spells really shouldn't work outside of a party, right? Less of an "interaction" and more like an oversight. Good vid all the same. Lots of stuff I've never come across.
In Honor More, aren’t camp buffs no longer a thing?
Hireling buffs & tradsr restock 😊🙏
Throw being absolutely broken (as in its been implemented badly) is a source of so much oddness.
That's an interesting way to pronounce "warding"
😂😂 "waæiding bond"
Oh wow so it's ONLY honour mode where you lose the pact of the blade extra attack stacking?
Yeah only in honor mode!
To clarify: Does the haste nerf (bringing it more in line with regular 5e) apply across the whole game or exclusively to Honour Mode?
And can somebody explain to me the difference between damage sources and damage riders? Does this mean the Phalar Aluve, Magic Missile combo is dead? Is it still good/worth using?
As far as I can tell the Magic Missile build still works. I’m playing on Balanced though, so it might be different
callous glow ring/coruscation ring plus spellsparkler has been amazing for me in honor mode for casting powerful magic missiles. i dont use phalar aluve (usually forget about the sword) but im sure theres even more ways to scale up the damage. plus that one necklace that gives you an extra missile dart i forget the name of
Only honor mode
Phalar Aluve is still disgusting and adds damage to pretty much everything.
Depending on your build, if you play around sing/shriek, it could last you your whole playthrough and you'd never feel like it wasn't contributing.
Also... you can respec to regain spells
Thought perilous stakes was meant to debuff enemies 😭
I thought they patched the buff trick? As soon as they leave the party, the effect stops?
the effect stops only for concentration spells (because kicking the person out of the party breaks the concentration)
You definitely over complicated refreshing traders stock. Just go to camp hit long rest and do a partial rest so you don’t use any camp supplies. This is how I stocked up on hill giant elixirs from Ethel in the grove
Just wanted to say the druid extra attacks from moon druid in wild shape still gets full benefit from haste unlike the extra attack feature im guessing its an oversite but just wanted to inform people
these aren't secrets, these are straight up exploits
Gale heals because if he does die in camp hell just nuke your camp.
Man! Why change Hex blade getting a third attack! I mean… this doesn’t affect me- I’ll likely never play horror mode. BUT… it IS how it works in 5e. 😂 Not that BG3 is 1 to 1… but usually the rules changes are IMPROVEMENTS.
Only problem with the honor mode thing is sometimes my guys never stop passing death saving throws 💀
The enemies should just kill them while their downed but at the same time you don’t need to leave a party member behind just play the game that’s the whole point
@@yodasnot-so-wellcousin445I agree on normal encounters but my elite or not so elite heist teams sometimes get caught 😂
That's not how you say "warding" by the way
I'm sorry we're casting WHAT bond????
Bolth of them
Hurr durr dey/dem
Wahrrrding omg i wna fight u bruh like how old were we when we learned this word ur a grown human
the should get rid of the uncommon rare world of warcraft item bs imho and do it like most dnd games "magic" or "non magic".
Werding Bond
You should look up how to pronounce ward
Tip 3 - refreshing traders by levelling up - has been a thing since at least 1.0.
Not really "secrets" so much as they are exploits, a little disappointed
Nah the hireling thing is just broken and stupid exploit. There is no difficulty in the game that requires that much cheese
Come on man, "Warding" really isn't that hard to pronounce. It's "Wore", with a "ding" at the end. It's not "Ward" like "Yard". Similarly with Death Ward...
But why write it the same as yard then? Why is bear and sear not the same? English is not as intuitive as you make it sound, at least for non natives
Found the pronunciation nazi.
Sounded fine to me, man. Maybe Toyhouze has a slight American East Coast accent?
Sounds Canadian
@@xandroy1273the guy in this video is a native speaker, judging by his accent. Don’t be ignorant.
