But even so... A book will be judged by its cover. If it had not been for X factor, britain's got talent and these types of programs, she'd been one of those that had been passed by by record labels because she didn't look the part.

@@helenetrstrup4817 And what a loss that would have been for the world. It is human nature to judge people by appearance, but that is a natural tendancy we have to constantly keep in check.
@@gwydion56 Truly, she would have been an unpolished gem, that would have been lost to the flow of time.
Judging is in our nature, we assume so many things just from looking at something, and we judge based on those assumptions. We simply can't help it. The only thing we can actively do, is choose how we react to the judgements we make and whether or not we take an active part in correcting or confirming said assumptions without coming across rude or patronizing.
It's like seeing an overweight stranger eating an ice cream. We can see they are overweight and assume a lot of things about their life. We make the judgement that the ice cream is probably not the best choice they could have made for a snack. This process is happening without our consent in a mere moment. But as we busy ourselves with all of the assumptions and judgements, we forget to consider, that they may not be at fault at all for their size. They could have had prior medical conditions or they could have been dieting and lost 30kg in the last few months, and it's the first ice cream they have that year, for all we know.
As for Susan here, at first glance she's a normal looking woman approaching her late 40s (in this video). Visually she is underwhelming and you write her off because you simply judge her "average", not to mention in the business I guess she would be considered old already. Of course there are artists out there who are older, but they are established and have a long track record (pun not necessarily intended). She is absolutely amazing for succeeding despite the obstacles life has put in front of her.
I am a big man and that night when Susan started singing, I had tears coming down my face.
Yeah Susan went on to be a SMASH success and now she's a millionaire who has sold over 25 million records, loved and adored the world over, so she definitely made her dreams come true.
As I heard someone say, she lost the finals, but she won the world. She has become a HUGE and beloved international star. Even today, very few know who Elaine Page is, but everyone knows Susan Boyle.
She was robbed of the win, but she has met her goals. She even sang with Elaine Paige! Amazing story! Ty for the reaction.
If you watch real close you can see Simon's eyes turn into dollar signs as soon as she starts singing.

Funny that...huh, now the world KNOWS this lady, Susan has a God given talent finally here!! Indeed we are all privileged to her her sing & follow her career! Just brilliant dear Susan you make Scotland proud!!
This song depicts her life's story. If you actually go back and read the lyrics as she sings it, you will hear why the passion is so real in her voice. Her back story is that she stayed home to take care of her mom instead of pursuing her dream. Everyone in her village knew who she was and her talent. They were not surprised when she made it to the finals. In the lyrics, the most profound phrase that so explains her is "my life has killed a dream I dreamed." She was later diagnosed with a form of autism but her village came together and helped her cope with all the stardom she was getting by keeping her in a routine, allowing her to remain in her family home, and not treating her as the star she is in order to help her thrive with her gift. She owns a mansion she can not live in, she moves around her home town as she has done for many years, and her childhood friend is her assistant who keeps her routines, schedules and does her hair and makeup daily. She has a therapist I believe that follows her on tours to help her cope with the stress of performing. She has done very well once diagnosed and treated.
You are so on point. That line haunts me when I hear her sing it.
My only critique of your summary is an interview she gave where she said before this performance no one in the village wanted to talk to her and the local children commonly threw rocks at her house for fun. Other than that you are spot on, she is a treasure and nowadays is fiercely protected by those who used to ignore her. Love this woman to death, what a talent!

This performance was on Britain's Got Talent. She made the show famous. No one expected her to have this talent based on her age and looks. She went on to make an album with Elane Page the lady she dreamed of singing with. Never judge a book by its cover.
For a few years I have been watching reaction videos... and watching a lot of them.... I thought when I saw India reacts to Tom Jones and the Righteous Brothers that I saw the greatest authenticity and transparency... but this beautiful young lady here set the bar for me. She is PURE AUTHENTICITY!!!! SHE IS MY "GOTO" GIRL FOR MY DAILY NEED OF AUTHENTICITY. AND DONT GET ME STARTED ON HER BEAUTY!

Several times in my life I have been shamed by how jaded even I could be. You can't tell by the less than attractive outside, or the unsophisticated personality, what gift God has bestowed on that person. The most unlikely of us can be a wonderful singer or dancer or painter or poet or scientist. Seems God gives us some miraculous gifts in plain wrapping.

Don't feel bad: I am a 66-year-old man, I have seen that video maybe 100 times, and I am still tearing up watching you discover it. Susan Boyle did become an excellent professional singer, certainly in a rank with Elaine Paige and other great singers. Her story hits me hard, and this video inspires me every time I watch it.

She didn't win the competitions with that brand, but she probably has been more successful than most of the winners. She has had challenges, but she gets through them. Simon Cowell adores her and has helped her. I am always shocked when someone says they don't know who she is.
I totally agree. In fact, during the AGT champions contest earlier this year, Simon Cowell himself called a young singer (Tom Ball, I think) "Susan Boyle's grandson". 😁

My favorite moment of this video is when she gives a quick little smile just before she starts singing. I read later that she was used to being snickered at back in her village before she would perform at karaoke in pubs, etc. Susan knew EXACTLY what was about to happen in that auditorium.

Throughout the show, they spruced up her hair and makeup and wardrobe, and she made it to the finals. In the following few years, she put out a couple of well received albums, and did very well. This audition was so wonderful and fun and beautifully sung, it is one for the record books.

Elaine Paige is a British musician who has starred on the west end and Broadway. She has topped the charts won every award possible and was the first person to play Eva Perron in the musical Evita. Her career has spanned over 50 years oh and she has also now dueted with Susan Boyle.
Susan is something of a superstar now who fills stadium and concert halls allover the world.
I didn't know a quarter of those things about Elaine Page, but I knew of her well enough to know that was still a freaking high bar for Susan to set for herself, even before seeing the audience roll their eyes.

Susan is one of my fellow scots,,we are from Scotland, im from Glasgow an susan is from Bathgate west lothian,susan looked after her parents most of her life so never got a chance to grow up a normal girl,once her parents passed away she persued hef lifelong dream of becoming a singer,she went from being unemployed to having around 50million plus in the bank and she stil, lives in the council house she grew up in,she also had a breakdown an had to be professionally treated an they discovered she has aspergers syndrome which kind of puts her on the autism spectrum, but boy can shd sing,shes never been married an has no family left..🏴🏴🏴🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🏴🏴🏴

Simon did take her under his wing. She tested as having Asperger’s, which explains some social aspects. She got rich, bought a big house and then was more at home in the council flat she had shared with her mom. The interview was very interesting.
This was the most unexpected and uplifting BGT or AGT audition of all time. I still get goosebumps! FTR, I am a retired, professional music critic, with 45+years experience and this was incredible.

When my granddaughter came home from high school in 2009. She just went on and on about I needed to hear this Susan Boyle. Everyone in her theatre class was just going crazy about this woman's voice. When she sang that first note the tears just started flowing and it still gets me going every time I watch this.

That is a year after a stroke almost robbed her of her voice!
She is one tough cookie, and absolutely deserves every penny she has earned for nurturing such a wonderful voice, and coming back so fully from a stroke... Wishing her every success with the rest of the post stroke healing, and that she is able to enjoy her singing career much longer

As some of your other comments have mentioned, she had an awful childhood-early adulthood because she was very shy and 'different'. She gave up her young adult life to care for her mother. She sang in church. When she gathered up her courage to audition. Simon was expecting something horrific, but was so taken back by her talent and her story that he was actively instrumental in getting her career started after she did not win BGT. Her story restores your faith in humanity.
Although she's renovated a bit, I believe that she still lives in the same house, her family home.
Simon did more than sign her. He totally took her under his wing. To this day they are the best if friends and Susan can call him for anything. I heard her discussing this on a talk show.
This wonderful, elegant, modest, humble gentle woman, went on stage knowing her life was that of responsibility towards her family and her parents, and she chose that song as it fitted her life. She may have sung , " My life has killed a dream I dreamed" but the manner she reacted on that stage, even before she started singing, she felt the " digs" by the male judges, and the audience, but what she had brewing inside her can be described by her giving a twist to that song and what she really meant was, " NO ONE WILL KILL THE DREAM I DREAM!" She was so sure of herself and the judges had to pick themselves up from their own downfall and then helped and honoured her, to live the dream she dreamt. She deserved it all, after giving her life to those who needed her, I believe she is a real hero and not many modern women can match her.
I went to England when I was 16 years old and I was lucky enough to find accommodation with people like Susan Boyle. Mrs Osborne, from Cornwall who lost all her family and Mis Titilah, from Scotland, who was also left on her own, both at the age of 75 in 1956, they told me how they had to care for their parents and missed not having children, and how they gave all their garden iron fence and their metal kitchen wares and pots and pans to help Britain build "Spitfires" and to ensure that Britain would not fall in the hands of Adolf Hitler and his Gestapo monsters.
I lived with these people at Chatham and Newcastle upon Tyne for a total of sixteen years before I returned to my home country, On looking back, these British women whose name will never go down in British history were also the heros that helped Britain, with their silent inconspicuous contributions. Interesting enough, both these two mentioned women used to sing, perhaps not as good as Susan Boyle, but I admired them, in that whenever I was required to deliver a debating speech at the Newcastle or any other British University, these two senior ladies would always find time and be patient to listen to my speech and pass remarks, where I could improve the delivery. May Mrs Osborne and Mrs Titilah, both Rest in Peace and one must congratulate Susan Boyle for being brave enough to not let anyone destroy the dream she dreamt. People around the world should use the courage of these gentle unspectacular modest women, as shining torchlights to light their own way ahead.
You ought to hear all her albums. She has 11albums out. She is fabulous. She had a breakdown, but she came back. She is 60 now and still singing.
Elaine Paige is the British equivalent of our Barbara Streisand. Elaine is the original singer / actress on the Broadway production CATS. I watched Susan the year it happened. When she mentioned Elaine Paige I researched her and bought 6 of her CD's. After BGT Elaine and Susan sang a duet.
All of these years later and this audition still has me in tears.
God, I love an underdog story!
There were a couple of lessons to learn from this:
1. Don't judge a person's potential based on their outward appearance
2. Continue to believe in yourself.
I think that Susan came across as fully confident in her talent, but (as Amanda said) not a single person in that audience took her seriously, until she started singing.
We miss out on amazing people, when we decide that we already know everything about them, before we have gotten to know them.
Her first album sold 22 million copies. I think she did OK.

If you're interested & curious, later in Susan's new career she actually sings with her idol Elaine Paige (one of England's greatest female singers). It's on CZcams -- it's stunning to see them together live in front of an audience. Talk about a dream coming true.
A few weeks later a cell phone salesman Paul Potts arrives in a wrinkled suit & tells them he wants to sing opera. Simon rolls his eyes again. Another moment of magic that was equally stunning. You must see this one too.
