    I'm 70 now. I was in grade school for the beginnings of the Space Race. I just had to learn everything a pre-teen could about everything space! I remember sneaking my "transistor radio" to school, so I could listen to launch-related info during recesses and lunch. It was also the time I discovered science fiction, though, looking back, kids books such as "R is for Rocket", the world of space travel in such works was being confirmed in the real world. Ham the monkey and Laika the dog were virtual friend of mine. Thank goodness I wasn't aware of their fates back then.
    60's space set my mind to science and tech, giving me a life's path. And, to this day, I can watch launch footage over and over, especially the lighting off of the Saturn Five and shuttle main engines.
    Thanks for filling in gaps of knowledge I could never even know I had back then with your research, reporting, and perspectives. Plus, your production values and skills are just plain wonderful.
    As you branch and grow your brand, I know you will find great satisfaction!

    I am getting caught up on this channel as I only now have become aware of it, but in the short amount amount of content in it I have already learned more about YOU than in the past several years of your vintage Space channel. I really started to chuckle when you explained how you as a Canadian trying to understand America kept driving you further and further back from the period you are Most known for (the 1950-1970s vintage space era) to the civil war, the war for independence to colonialism
    As a descendant of both hessian and Irish mercenary clans let me tell you that your journey has only begun. You might find yourself being driven back to the counter reformation wars, the crusades, perhaps even back to the great schism. That’s the beauty and the deadly trap of being a fan of history, we find ourselves going all the way back until we hit the wall of of undocumented history

You mentioned the news, As an american giving advice to a Canadian; be careful of the modern news media's take on "history". I'm really looking forward to the journey.

  • @alfamaize
    @alfamaize Před 3 lety +3

    Amy, with the look into American history from a Canadian's look into it- can you also highlight Canadian history when it matters to what you are finding? For instance, Washington's original military experience was more of a dispute between Britain and France WRT the Ohio Valley- of course that ends up being some Canadian history, too. There is the attack on Quebec as an early part of the Revolution, the War of 1812, and even some worries in Canada over the Civil War that there could be an invasion. Let alone there's a huge chunk of Canada that has a huge French background, which is confusing (let alone the conflict that Washington started that kind of peaked in 1759 in Quebec City.)
    So many ties.

    • @theSpaceVixen
      @theSpaceVixen  Před 3 lety +3

      Yup. There's a lot of this that's of interest to me as a Canadian wanting to know Canadian history, too. Like Canada's independence coming from the US Civil War. It's very connected and will be part of the story in fits and spurts!

      Glad I'm not the only one. As an American (US) will appreciate the deeper dive into my own History but also how Canada fits in... So often it's easy to forget our Neighbor (sorry Neighbour) to the North...

  • @tomredd9025
    @tomredd9025 Před 2 lety

    I am excited on your new direction. As a resident in the Detroit area, it will be fun to find out what our SOUTHERN neighbor thinks of us. Yes, Detroit is north of Canada - look it up on a map. This comes up as a Jeopardy question every so often. I grew up watching Canadian TV. Back in the "day" when there were only 3 American TV networks, we Detroit kids also had the Canadian Broadcast Corporation (CBC) out of Windsor Ontario, so I am a somewhat rare American who knows Canadian history. The actual city I live in is Hamtramck, Michigan. It is named after Jean Francois (John Francis) Hamtramck, a French Canadian, who may be of interest to you. When American rebels invaded Canada prior to the Declaration of Independence, Hamtramck was a 19-year-old who decided to throw in his lot with the rebels. He fought all through the Revolution rising to the rank of captain. He was one of Alexander Hamilton's main officers, when Hamilton led the attack on Redoubt #10 at Yorktown. When the redoubt was taken, Cornwallis' defenses were essentially broken and he had to surrender, ending the American Revolution in a victory for the new United States. Hamtramck stayed in the army after the revolution, rising to the rank of Colonel. At the important post revolution battle of Fallen Timber, under General "Mad" Anthony Wayne, Hamtramck led the attack that secured victory and paved the way for England finally leaving the United States' northwestern lands. Later, Colonel Hamtramck was sent by General Wayne to secure Detroit from the British, who should have left about 10 years earlier, and become the first American commander of Detroit, one of the new nation's most important frontier cities. Hamtramck is an obscure figure today but was fairly well known in his day and was commended by Washington himself. Colonel Hamtramck remains were eventually moved to our city which bears his name. He is buried in front of the city's monument to all its fallen soldiers. As an aside, when Detroit celebrated its Tri-Centennial in 2001, the Detroit Free Press named Colonel Hamtramck as the "Most Reburied Detroiter." He had been disinterred and reburied 4 times! Good luck on your new direction.

    You're good at covering history in an interesting and fun way. You did a great job on the Apollo space program, and you'll do great on this topic, and it's a huge one. There's a huge amount of material on US history, most of which is complex. I can highly recommend the memoirs of former President Richard Nixon, who was probably the most complex and enigmatic US President of the 20th century. Plus, he wrote very well. He could have been a writer if he hadn't been a lawyer and politicians.

    Your style and enthusiasm, infectious. You probably know about James Burke';s "Connections" and his "The Day the Universe Changed". Outdated, perhaps, but one needn't emulate Hitchcock (Fermi, Kant, Heinlein, Kerouac, Descartes) to understand the bigger, more complicated interconnections. Your groove is your own and I'm eager to see where you take it. Rock on with your bad self.

    Nice👍 looking forward to seeing it from a different perspective especially in these chaotic times. Hopefully your take on past events from both sides of the spectrum might inspire others to be open minded in the present. But at the very least I'll be looking forward to them🙂

    I am so exited about this change, I study American history and my main area of study is WWII and the Cold War. So I can’t wait to see what you come up with.

    Amy you'll be intrigued by the history of this country. Enjoy your discovery of American History. Hope you get a chance to visit some of the National Historical Sites once this pandemic ends.
