An astronaut riding a motorbike on the Moon, another fine addition to the list of things I didn't know I wanted to see
For that alternate history where we send Steve McQueen to the moon and he has to escape from moon Nazis.
@@iainbagnall4825 This is starting to sound way too close to iron sky and I love it
For maximum 'Murka it needs to be a Harley. With ape hangars.
It would have had to have been John Young!
In space, no one can hear your HD, thank goodness! lol
It must be Christmas; Amy made a new video AND CZcams's algorithm immediately sent it my way this time. Yay!
Yes she’s back 😊 I love this channel.
I'm curious about the feedback from the astronauts regarding driving the lunar rover on the Moon. How good were the engineers at predicting the difficulties and hazards that the astronauts were to experience?
There's a great book that came out this past July called _Across the Airless Wilds: The Lunar Rover and the Triumph of the Final Moon Landings_ that answers that question (and many more) in great detail. I listened to the audiobook and highly recommend it.
@@marshallcello1128 Thank you for this information. Sounds like an amazing book (and my library has it in stock!)
@@marshallcello1128 Thanks! Sounds like an interesting book. Ordered it for myself as a Christmas present.
I remember the Apollo 15 and 17 crews raving about the rover. On 15, they reported it was going up an incline at 10 mph, faster than the designers thought it could go headed upward.
Just watch some footage of John Young taking the rover for a spin on Apollo 16 with Charlie Duke’s commentary. It tells you all you need to know.
Hi Amy. Thanks for taking the time to put all the metric conversions into your video. It made it a lot easier for me to understand.
Amy, have you ever considered doing one of your deep dives into the USAF/NASA heavy lifting body program from the 1960s?
Love the channel. Keep doing your thing.
I hope she's alright. Nothing posted in a year.
Samesies. Amy we miss you!
I always wanted to see a video of the rover deployment. Thank you for all your work! You, your channel, and books are amazing! Thank you cheers!
Remember Amy, your critics are loudest when you're doing your best. Your fans are loudest when you are not. It's up to you who you want to take to heart. I've always loved your work, and look forward to many more years to come!
Always great to see a new video from Amy. Love these videos.
She could talk about Pig Lard Refining and i would watch it with a daydreamed smile frozen across my face.... i betting the rest of you all know what i mean.
Merry Christmas, Amy. All I want for Christmas is more frequent Vintage Space content! Really miss your old upload schedule. Thank you, John
Thank you for all your content over the years Amy, I always enjoy your content on both channels! You’ve taught me more about space flight and Apollo than anyone else, I know you’re super busy but hope you get back to CZcams at some point 🙂
Most of these pics I’ve never seen. A motorcycle!
Long time subscriber. You’re great.
Keep rocking all things vintage. History is awesome!
Thanks Amy! it's always cool seeing how these ideas take shape.
I got to see one of the test lunar Rovers at the Museum of Flight in Seattle. It was awesome!
Very excited for your channel relaunch on the other side. Keep being awesome. Thank you as always and can’t wait to see you again.
Another WONDERFUL tidbit from our FAVORITE Canadienne!! I LOVE the Space Race era, and you make it SO enjoyable to remember and explore it!! Thanks lovely girl!!!!
Glad they didn't have to use the bike.
Happy holidays.
Very interesting, all the possible thoughts of exploring the lunar surface beyond walking distance of the LM. Thanks Amy!
I cant be the only one who noticed the kerbel space program music as the intro music.
Thank you for coming back. I have missed you. Your topics are always great!
I just watched “ don’t look up” a Netflix sci fi about a comet, the lead female character reminded me so much you I had to check her identity. You two could be twins. This is a compliment. Keep it up! Coy
First I press the like button.
After that the play button.
Thank you Amy for all your efforts!
Would have been interesting to have the lander itself be the rover. Land, drive around, when done, blast off.
G'day,
Welcome to the concept of the Elbarsole, closely related to the Arselbow, in which ambitious curious beginners discover that an Elbow and an Arsehole are build differently because they have to accomplish Very DIFFERENT Tasks.
Attempting to contrive an Elbow which functions as an Arsehole adds weight, adds complexity, and results in a bad Elbow which is almost useless when functioning as an Arsehole...., and the Arselbow is equally impractical.
Usually the terms are applied to attempts to hybridise Sailboats with Aeroplanes, resulting in a heavily overbuilt Aeroplane which is slow, featuring a small payload, wastes a lot of fuel, and functions horribly badly as a Sailboat.
To learn more, backtrack me to my "Personal Aeroplanology..." Playlist, thereinat to locate and giggle at,
"Grand Unified Theory Of Elbarsoles, Arselbows, & Even Elbarseyeballs...!"
Bottom line, the Soviet Union tried building a Battle-Tank with a set of Biplane Glider Wings, intending to aerotow it to the Battlefield, glide down to land, jettison the Wing Cellule & Tail, then defeat ye Enemy (Any Me ...) ; and it was a useless waste of time.
A Lunar Lander with Tracks or Wheels to function as a Rover and then blasts off again is the literal embodiment of the Elbarseyeball concept.
"Transformers" are cute TOYS which appeal to the 3 to 7 year-olds who have almost no understanding of practical realities.
Such is life,
Have a good one...
Stay safe.
;-p
Ciao !
@@WarblesOnALot TL;DR...
Truly a great, well-researched brief on the lunar rover proposals. Kind of makes me wish those mobile laboratories were able to fly on the later Apollo missions that were canceled. It also makes me feel nostalgia for Boeing when it was actually a creative engineer-led company.
Miss you Amy. Hope you're happy and well:)
The more I learn from your channel the more I appreciate all of the hard work and decision making that went in to early space flight.
That rover was subcontract built by GM. the best EV they ever made! (Or probably ever will make). thanks for all your great vids
Well tbf, there's no air on the moon, so we don't know if it would catch fire like a Chevy Bolt.
Harsh :)
It’s easy to be the best if you are the only one. Plus those Mars rovers are a whole lot more impressive to be honest
@@iainbagnall4825 Lithium cobalt batteries don't need air to catch fire. Not that they existed during Apollo mind, so it's a moot point.
Ahhhh... Great photos of .. THE SPACE BIKE!!!!
I thought they had a tracked version that never flew to the moon. I could be wrong and just remembering a concept art that was done.
Keep up the great work in educating the masses of the history of space flight. Enjoying the Twitch stream when I can catch it.
Great job describing a very complicated set of possibilities
That Kerbal background music
We love you dear. You are an amazingly brilliant human being!
It's funny how we use to take things like the lunar rover for granted. NASA was fighting against the tyranny of the rocket equation so any extra pound (or kilogram for those outside US) meant tons of headaches for the engineers. It's interesting that they where looking for lighter (and sometimes heavier) options.
"Tonnes" of headaches for metric lol!
Great to see your videos back on my CZcams feed! Another excellent video!
Loving that moontocross
Happy Holidays, Amy!! You are really good at this. I enjoy your videos on Vintage Space!! Cheers!! 🤓🌲
I appreciate that you still try to keep us OG vintage space fans appeased.
Both of your books were great, and it's been fun seeing Pete (Conrad the cat) getting a little screen time on occasion too.
I look forward to seeing the other paths you choose to take (I'm sorry you had to do the video on the problems us public folk have put you through. Do what makes you happy, and the pieces will fall into place).
Thank you again,
~me
kerbal space program soundbed, very fitting. :D
Yeah, I heard that and had to pause to find out if my memory was right. So iconic.
Very impressive segment. I had never heard of the other concepts and I’m old. 😅
This is a pleasant surprise! Awesome topic, thanks for spending the time to make this video!
Digging in underneath ahead of time remote control style is a nice way to avoid radiation.
Just came across your channel....DAMN GOOD!!
You're going to end up being the reason why I start reading books again.
Thank you, Amy. I always enjoy and learn from your videos!
Where have you been? Welcome back! 😊👋
Love you. Love space. Love your channel :)
Hello Amy, thank you for your great work! I always enjoy watching your videos and I'm always amazed. All the best to you, your channel and your loved ones!
A great video as usual! Thanks Amy.
The lunar rover was perfect in it’s simplicity.
The Lunar Jeep!
Thank you Ami. Your presentations are outstanding.
Charlie: "C'mon, John, do a sharp one!"
John: "Chaaaaarlie ... I ain't wanna do that."
Off roading in the Moon Jeep!
Can't remember seeing the rover deploy before! TFS, GB :)
Just got a notification for your other channel. I am a subscriber to both channels now. Thank you for the great videos and original ideas you continue to bring to your suscribers!
Amy, it's ALWAYS a delight to hear you talking about something... no matter what that might be. You BE and do whatever your heart desires. Pay no attention to those sending you bad messages and complaints. Peace, Health, and EXTREME HAPPINESS to you always!
love your work - any subject - please keep it up.
Always look forward to a new episode
CZcams, after 6 months... Hey Watch some vintage space!
Me: Yes, I need it.
Thank you Maa'm, its always a pleasure to see another of your videos .
I've Always have been a fan of the rover thank you for more information that I didn't know about. You are great.
Moonbuggy sweet, I'd seen the replica while the Smithsonithonian was on tour a few years back it was awesome
Great videom thank you. Just a small nitpicking - the weight of MOCOM in kg in 3:35 is basically invisible in white (around 4309kg if anyones was wondering like me)
I had a concept for a lunar vehicle that could easily fold out and more compacted than the lunar rover. It has steering on the front and back.
Great video as always! I appreciate the thorough research and care you put into your content, as well as your enthusiasm. I’m surprised you didn’t mention your wonderful Moon Worm video, which was also awesome! I appreciate everything you do, and always look forward to your videos. I trust you to make any topic interesting, please keep doing what you like. We’ll follow!
Thanks for the metric conversions.
Awesome stuff! Thank you for bringing it to light!
Nice job again, Amy! Always informative and fun.
Excellent video, as always! Congratulations!
Thank you for the great video. I am sorry that I came to your channel so late.
I love you and your little corner of the internet! Have a merry, merry Xmas and Happy New Year! Can't wait!
Awesome job as usual, glad to see you doing History with flair. Keep up the Great work. I'd love to see what you have in store for the future of History.
Yet again, learned something new about the Apollo Program. Keep doing your thing Amy - space-related or otherwise!
Fantastic video! Thanks
The prototype of the Grumman design hangs in the Cradle of Aviation Museum.
Love your space content and am open to see what other content you produce from this time in history.
Thank you, Amy!
Thanks for the vid. Always great.
Day-making, Ms. Shira! LOVE your work.
I lived though this. It was amazing!
Damn.. those go pros they used were massive 🤣
There's something just badass-sounding about an "LM Truck." Imagine a Ford F-350 on steroids!
Luv your vids! Thank you for sharing
Great episode, Merry Christmas❗️
Very interesting, thanks Amy!
Good stuff. Brilliant. Well researched.
Great as ever. Always a super surprise when you post a new vid.
This was great! Never heard of the lunar electric bike prototype. Keep up the great work Amy!
Enjoyed this. Happy Holidays..
Keep these coming!
Merry Christmas to you and Pete. I hope he's on the good list this year.
There's a video by someone else, Scott Manley maybe, where they talked about the lunar worm vehicle, which would slither across the surface like a scene from Dune.
I never even thought about alternatives to the moon buggy. Guess it's cuz that's what I watched on TV. Thanks for this eye opener.
Fascinating! I would love to see a deep dive into each of the mobility projects where the available resources permit.
Thank You for all you do!
If you could find the time to do a segment on the inner workings of Mission Control in the early days of space flight that would be great.
Thanks Again.
If I had to go to the moon and possibly be stranded there in a shelter, I'd definitely want to have Amy on my 2 person only command mission.
Thank you Amy, I enjoy your content
Such a cool subject. Thank you, Amy! Both for the video and the article.
Thank you so much I so enjoy your work great video as always
Thanks Amy I learned a lot. Thank you for your videos
Hi Amy,
Thank you again for a wonderful video - just brilliant.
For several years I was a Patreon sponsor of yours and I was happy to be so. You put up regular 5 or 6 minute long videos that I found fascinating. These videos appeared about once a week and I really looked forward to their arrival. Then the time between videos started to get longer. Initially it was because you were invited Downunder to the east coast of Australia for a lecture tour. Then you were writing your first book “Breaking the Chains of Gravity”. Then you were writing your second book “Fighting for Space”. I have both books and they are a great read. I was paying my Patreon subscription because I enjoyed the videos and was prepared to pay for them. As they became fewer and fewer, I began thinking “What am I paying for ?”.
Then I lost my job due to COVID and I could no longer afford the Patreon subscription, so I had to cancel it.
I now have a new job (yay !) and can once again afford to sponsor you, but I am hesitant to do so. If your videos are going to continue being infrequent , I cannot justify the subscription. I they were to once again become regular (perhaps monthly if you cannot manage weekly or even fortnightly) then I would be happy to renew my sponsorship.
Perhaps you could make a statement as to the frequency of your videos on your next one ?
Many thanks.
Cheers,
She just posted an update video on her other channel. It's just called "Amy Shira Teitel". Should answer a lot of your questions!
