    great vid. i am a kayak angler. However our sports are different, but the same. I do have a 12 ft sit on top fin drive kayak. I am very big on safety. My kayak fully loaded when i go out for the day is about 135lbs, Just the kayak and all my gear. I fish in the fl keys for fun, and it's just catch and release. I do go with friends 90 percent of the time. In my front storage hatch i have a 5ltr dry bag, which is for my emergency supplies, Headlamp, air horn, glow sticks, extra batteries for all my electronics, 360 led light with flag, my port and starboard bow light red/green. Also in that hatch is a change of clothes, rain jacket, pants, and i keep a spare paddle in my hull. I do run the new Bixpy motor but total weight with battery is about 20 lbs, and its on my gravity rudder. I have 2 usb plug ins installed in my cockpit for charging anything usb, and i have a voltmeter to monitor my batteries. I run a 20 amp hr 2 lb Nocqua battery for my FF/gps? and usb chargers. My pfd never comes off unless i am baxk at the launch. In my cockpit i have a emerg bag, incase i were ever seperated from my kayak with a 2 way radio, glow sticks, lighters, headlamp, batteries, water, power bars. And i will never leave the launch without my bildge pump on board. I do 4 trips a year with three friends from 3 night to 5 night, camp fish trips. we've been doing it for 5 years now. Ilook forward to those trips. Meeting up, parking our trucks, loading and enjoy peace, and mother nature. Always must plan for something to go wrong. I've watched so many people with different outdoor hobies, and they have to survive, due to being unprepaired. Equiptment to save your life or wait for help, is the most important gear you must have. Stay safe, i'm sure you're still enjoying your adventures. It's our therapy on the water. god bless..

    Thanks! I love hearing the logic behind the decisions you make. Whether I opt to follow the same pattern, I learn something valuable every time. Like leaving some band aids in another pack that’s easy to reach. Gloves for salt water. Olives for energy. I love olives! But that never occurred to me!!! One major change I’d make. Put the dog in first. Priorities!!!! 🤗

    very good video. I do a little paddling too I see from your videos on this channel you do more whitewater wish I was in a state to do that but I live in the flat lands of Florida. It would be nice to hear about your trip, the wife and I want to do the glades sometime. If I might make a few recommendations if you do future trips. You might find water bladder work a bit better then those large bottles, I have friends that use the small bottles they both tend to fit better and take up less space. More but smaller drybags once again just to make packing easier and I find labeling them saves form digging, also when time comes to pack up things go back the same way they came out. One last thing, putting so much in the cockpit with you, especially between your legs maybe I worry to much but that could cause entrapment. When you are sitting upright there maybe be plenty of room but if the kayak flipped over the pack could shift and pin your legs making it hard or worse to get out. Just some thoughts and thanks for taking the time to do this video.

    Those watershed bags are super nice but in general you will do better with more smaller bags, then fewer big bags. It’s easier to fill all the little gaps. Similarly, its easier to pack your water in something like dromedary bags, which can flex and bend to fit the shape of your hull. Plus when they are empty, they pack smaller, making it easier to pack every day. Great video though! Ironically I did a similar video, AND my dog was in the video as well, but your dog was way better behaved.

    • @Famagogo

      Thanks for the tips! for this particular trip there is a National Park Requirement for all food and water to be in hard sided containers. Seems the raccoons and other critters are puncturing soft dromedary bags in search of fresh water. But that's a good tip for other areas. Thanks for watching!

    Very well organised. Ive had my pump ripped off by going head into mild surf, to get ocean bound. My elastics are old.. and the rope i had it on untied ( not secure knot). Those drybags look tough...
    For those without wheels, we do 3 or so trips offloading gear , using big polyester shoppingbags or similar. Then carry the kayak on the shoulder, hand in cockpit.

    Man it's too bad you couldn't use a purifier - the weight and space required for those 5 gallons of water is a killer. Excellent video but I do have one point I was called out on when I made a packing video years ago and it actually made good sense. He said "when I opened the hatch the very first thing I should see is the first aid kit." Not crucial but it did make sense once I thought about it. Hope you enjoyed the trip!

    Really clever to start with the safety equipment. The Inreach Satellit Com. is still very unknown, but a must if you want to stay in touch with the rescue services and the home front. I have it too, I notice a lot of people haven't heard of it, and go mountaineering or kayaking without enough thoughts about safety. You could also tell people what you have in your First AID Kit. I think your fan's will be interested. :D

      Sometimes it gets left behind once we get to the water. But this one breaks down and can fit in the boat of it's not too full of other gear.

  • @kenrosenstein198
    @kenrosenstein198 Před 4 lety

    Clearly you know how to be safe, and have experience to back it up. Might you consider packing your 'ditch' supplies on the fore-deck, and keep photography gear behind the seat, such that in the event of an unexpected bailout you can exit the cockpit easily?

    • @Famagogo
      @Famagogo  Před 4 lety

      That’s a good idea. We are very confident rolling the kayak so we feel bailing out is very unlikely. But we have practiced this with the lap bag. Also it’s really hard to get your camera out from behind your cockpit while in the water. We shoot often in the boat on the water and this is the best compromise we have found so far.

    @KattLover5412 Před 4 lety

    I'm getting likely a Dagger Zydeco, and I plan to eventually do some overnight trips and I'm scared that i won't have space for gear, plus the kayak doesn't really have a high weight rating

    • @Famagogo
      @Famagogo  Před 4 lety +1

      I’m not that familiar with the Zydeco. We are using the Jackson kayak Journey 14. It’s got tons of room for a 10-14 day trip. If your doing overnighters and going lightweight backpack style you can fit in some pretty small boats. It’s good to do a loaded test paddle to see how your boat will handle on the water.
