Krakow is such a beautiful and historic place to visit. We enjoyed all that we did including the food and drink. But I'm more into photography and history and so those kind of things are what my memories remind me of. We stayed in Kazimierz and would highly recommend to anyone going for a visit. I love how so many of your meals included edible flowers. Beautiful as well as good for you. What a lovely experience! BTW, I love pierogis! The stuffed cabbage looked amazing! I think Krakow will definitely be on a future agenda!
Thanks for watching, Rebecca! Krakow exceeded our expectations by miles! And the flowers were lovely and tasty. I can't believe I've lived this long without ever tasting pierogi! And the stuffed cabbage was incredible. It's not a complicated dish and doesn't require a ton of ingredients, but it is a little time consuming, especially for my mother with three young children to raise. My kids wouldn't get near stuffed cabbage, but I may have to make it at some point on the road. We definitely plan to visit Krakow again and spend more time there. If you do go, we'd love to know what you think of it. I feel like it's a trending city right now for a lot of people. Lots of young people to add fresh energy. -Judy

8:06 If Kevin is such a big fan of apple pie, let him go to the Tatra Mountains. In addition to the fact they're beautiful alpine-type mountains (great climbing walls!), there's an unofficial "Apple Pie Trail" there - from mountain hut to mountain hut. In each of them apple pie is baked and there's a cyclic contest to see who made the best one. I swear, it's worth walking even 20 kilometers up and down to eat one!
WHAT?! I missed out on the "Apple Pie Trail"?! 😂 One more reason to head back to Poland next year. And I guess we'd work off the calories with the hiking. A win-win scenario! Thanks for the tip! - Kevin

I am 100% Polish. 3 of my grandparents were born in Poland. I grew up on Polish food! My husband, daughter, and her family, and I are planning a trip to Poland in July, 2024 so I have been watching every video on Poland that I can find. It's obvious that neither one of you like Polish food, but it's nice that you were pleasantly surprised in Krakow. However, thanks for sharing your food adventures in Krakow.
I'm not sure what you mean about not liking Polish food. We absolutely loved it. (Or are you joking?) I talked about how special it was to eat gołąbki (which is what my adopted mother used to make when I was growing up) and how much I loved zurek soup and the other sour soup I tried and we couldn't eat enough pierogi and how delicious zapiekanka was, and kompot. Our entire reason for doing this video was because we ADORED the food in Poland. I saved several recipes from our visit so that we could recreate some of the foods while we are on the road. I wasn't impressed with bigos or the goulash, but those totally could have been the restaurant we ate them in and not the foods themselves. I'm not sure how our message came across that way, but that's disappointing to hear.

Kraków and its Polish food took us by surprise. We had no idea how much we were going to love everything! We would definitely visit again just for the food, but at the same time, there is so much there we enjoyed! Thank you for taking the time to leave us this comment! -Judy
If You like to make Polish Zurek soup I do recommend to take trip to Polish shop in US place you living and buy Zurek stock is much easy to make ! Great video 😊
Thank you so much for watching! Unfortunately, we travel full time and are in the US to visit family for only a few weeks out of the year and we stay in hotels while we're there. But I may look around while we're still in Europe to see if there's a Polish store somewhere. Otherwise, the fermentation is time consuming (passively), but doesn't look too difficult. I am eager to enjoy it again! -Judy
We were in Krakow in 2019 and the food was a personal highlight since it brought back memories from nearly 50 years ago of the meals cooked by my grandmother. Hunter stew, sour rye soup, kapusta, pierogies, kielbasa, and paczki (Polish donuts) were all staples in her kitchen and they were part of nearly every meal over our 3 days there. Did you try any of the milk bars? Cafeteria-style with amazing home-cooked dishes for a great price.
One of the more interesting late-night spots was a guy in a Soviet-era blue van selling grilled fresh kielbasa on a bun with a squirt of mustard for about $4. It took a bit of searching, but a huge crowd that was worth the adventure.
Looking forward to seeing where you went. Auschwitz is unforgettable for a lot of reasons and the salt mine was pretty cool. However, the city itself was a great surprise. We did a bike tour one afternoon which is something that we have done in a few places as it is a great way to explore with a guide. Jewish quarter, Schindler's factory, the castle, and the fire-breathing dragon.

It is great you got to spend 11 days in my beautiful city! I am an American who has lived in Kraków for over 10 years. The potato pancakes and goulash you showed aren’t necessarily the typical way it is served. By the way it was served, I can see why you were slightly disappointed. I have had some excellent potato pancakes and goulash here. Gołąbki can also be served with mushroom sauce instead of tomato sauce. As you found, the desserts are normally not overly sweet like American desserts. One super tasty dessert here is beza with marscapone. Poland is a big apple producing country. Which is probably why apple cakes and pies are so popular here. Hope you get to come back to Kraków one day to make more discoveries. Even living here almost 11 years is not enough time to enjoy and see it all!😍

When we return we will have to try potato pancakes and goulash somewhere else for hopefully a better experience. As far as Gołąbki, my mother made it with tomato sauce, so I actually was delighted to taste it that way. We will absolutely be back. @@FindingGinaMarie I really appreciated that it was obvious you had done some research about the city before coming here. Some CZcamsrs obviously has not done even an ounce of research before coming here. For your next visit, Kuchnia u Doroty on Augustiańska 4 in Kazimierz area has very good potato pancakes and goulash. Also Bar Smak on Karmelicka not far from Old Town Square has a different type of potato cake with either goulash or mushroom sauce. Both are quite tasty. Another good and affordable restaurant is Smakołyki across from Planty. if you come back in the summertime, Tiffany Ice Cream on Plac Szczapański in Old Town has excellent ice cream. Flavors such as Green Tea, Sesame, Dark Chocolate. Many ingredients they use in the ice cream comes from their own garden. Good Lood is a chain of ice cream shops. Their ice cream is also tasty, but not as speciality as Tiffany’s. The great thing about Kraków is that it is so walkable you can walk off some of the calories from all the tasty food.😉
Thank you, Sandra. We can't always do as much advance planning as we'd do if we had a year or six months to plan a vacation. I was able to take a few days to do deep planning to understand the cultural things to do and foods to eat so we could have a more immersive experience, even though it was too brief. Thanks for noticing the extra work because while it makes our experiences of a place much richer, it does take a lot of time! I am saving all your suggestions for our next visit because these are the things I wish I knew when we were there! -Judy
W Warszawie warto odwiedzić Zapiecek - niedrogą restaurację na ulicy Krakowskie Przedmieście. Tam serwują tradycyjne polskie dania, zupy, pierogi z różnymi farszami, cepeliny, naleśniki, gołabki, desery i ciasta. Zapewniam - wszystkie dania wypróbowałam i tam zapraszam swoich zagranicznych przyjaciół - wychodzili zadowoleni. Polecam. Dodam, że nie jestem i nie byłam pracownikiem tej restauracji. Cieszę się, że smaki polskich dań przypadły państwu do gustu.

Those soups look delish! A rye base sounds so good. I do feel full now. Haha. I cant believe how cheap the dining was! Peirogi are also not hard to make from scratch (but a pain when we dont seal well and they split open) we boil them, then pan fry so they have a toasty outside to contrast the soft interior. Many places also serve with a side of grilled kielbasa. Of course, your OG pierogis looked delish! Dumplings in all countries are just so good. :)

I’ve had Japanese gyoza that are fried afterwards, but I actually prefer when they’re not. And yes! Now that we know what to look for, we are seeking them out. You forgot about one important dish for Kraków,namely Maczanka Krakowska.Slow- roasted pork in caraway sauce,served in a roll.

You missed such dishes like smażona kaszanka z chlebem ( Blood sosuage with anion and pieece of bread), kopytka, cucumber soup, kartacze and other very delicious polush dishes :) Maybe someday you will travel to polish countryside when you will trie it ;)

Ive never heard of tomato based goulash. Every one Ive ever seen, including from the kitchen of my Polish neighbor, it was brown gravy/sauce. But it always had more vehetables than that.
How interesting, Donna! It's obviously quite different than American goulash (even though my Polish mother made it)! I did miss the umami of the tomato paste, but perhaps I need to try it again somewhere else and remove any expectations of how it will taste and just embrace what it is. Potato pancackes with gulash are usually called "placki po zbójnicku/góralsku" and when done well they my favourite. But they should be thinner and come with sauce on them but more vegetables than meat especially paprika. Meat pieces should also be smaller.
Thanks for the insights. I know it's not traditional, but I felt like the goulash should have had some sort of umami like a bit of tomato paste or even a dash of Worcestershire sauce and even a bit more pepper. I was just craving a "something more" flavor that I didn't get. I'm not sure if the pancakes should have tasted more fluffy than dense, but they weren't what I wanted them to be. We'll have to try again someplace else to see if it was just that particular restaurant that failed us. -Judy
There are two kinds of cherries which in polish cherry is usually wiśnia which is sour while there is also czereśnia which is sweet.
The cherries that were in our dessert were sour, but I enjoyed them. Despite being married for nearly 40 years, I'm shocked that Kevin doesn't enjoy cherries in general. Who knew?! Second sour soup isn't żurek, for 99% it is kapuśniak.
That's what someone else mentioned! The menu said that it was sour rye soup in English, so I assumed it was the same, but you're probably right. I thought they both were delicious. I enjoyed the sour flavor of them, but I'll have to look more carefully next time. Are there other parts of Poland you think we should explore? -Judy

It was nice to watch you. It's a bit strange that my mother from Poland didn't make Pierogi! . Gigos are eaten in Poland rather in the colder months or during family celebrations and eaten with a slice of bread - bread is eaten or dipped. You say that you would like to make Żurek at home, nothing simpler, you buy a bag of Żurek, add spices, smoked sausage and boiled eggs and it's ready. I've noticed that tourists never order fried chicken liver with onion - it's delicious for me - 2 onions are cut, lightly fried to make them glazed, put aside and then the chicken livers are coated in flour in a pan with some oil and now together with the glazed onion, together with the livers, they are fried until they are soft - put a lid on the frying pan because it will splatter and salt will be added at the end, because if you salt the liver before frying it, the liver will be hard. Thanks for watching, Jerzy! Good to know about Bigos being more of a winter food. Someone else mentioned that to me as well. Yes, I definitely plan to make Zurek soup myself. I found a recipe that shows how to make the rye starter, but it takes five days to ferment. Outside of Poland, I'm not sure where to get the starter, but at least there's an alternative (if I can be patient enough to wait for it to be ready!)!
From my own experience, my German father loved liver and onions, but only his sister would make it for him after his mother passed away. Offal isn't a hugely popular food in the US, but I know the older generation who lived through times that required cheaper cuts of meat adore it. I recall having a taste of a liver dumplings soup from my aunt. It wasn't bad, but I couldn't get the image of liver out of my mind enough to enjoy it. I also think it's tricky to order in a restaurant unless you know they are expert at preparing it because you don't want to buy an expensive meal and not enjoy it. But I probably need to be more adventurous with my food! Thanks for the suggestions about CZcams. Unfortunately, I have spent way too much time down that rabbit hole today!

Regarding Żurek, hardly anyone in Poland makes the leaven themselves - you buy a sachet with ready-made powder and spices, if it's hard to get in the USA, come on, do you have a Polish grocery store there? this is internet with a Polish grocery store. And regarding the aforementioned chicken liver, in fact, if there are difficulties with chicken liver, then ordinary liver is not the same, I did not like ordinary liver either. Good luck on your further journey.
Unfortunately, Jerzy, as full-time travelers, we never know where we are going to be, and online shopping can be tricky. But perhaps when we know we'll be somewhere in Europe for a month that it might be a bit easier to procure. One linguistic and historical note. You didn't have Russian dumplings. This is a translation error. You ate Ruthenian dumplings(pierogi ruskie). Ruthenia was part of Poland for nearly 1000 years. These are the areas of western Ukraine and south-eastern Poland today. The word Ruski( Ruthenian ) became a synonym for Russian in everyday language at the beginning of the 20th century. That is why the Russian dumplings are often translated instead of Ruthenian dumplings. Russian dumplings have their own name - pelmeni. You won't eat real Bigos in a restaurant. Bigos needs to be cooked for at least three days. Current sanitary regulations do not allow such preparation of dishes. A good bigos is made from a mixture of sauerkraut and fresh cabbage, several types of meat and several types of sausages, dried forest mushrooms, dried and smoked plums, red wine and appropriate spices.
Hi Yake, Thank you for watching. Perhaps I wasn't clear. On the menu they were listed in both Polish and English. The English stated they were "Russian Lift," but that's just what this restaurant called them. I didn't necessarily think at the time that they were authentic Russian dumplings.But this all is interesting to know about! @@FindingGinaMarie It's the restaurateurs fault. This proves their historical and linguistic ignorance. This error is relatively common, unfortunately. The non-literary language and lack of knowledge of the country's history are largely to blame. People are being misled by the stupidity of restaurant owners.
@@yakeosicki8965 It may be whoever they are using as translators. These pierogi are listed on the menu in Polish as Ruskie Lift, but then the translation side in English becomes Russian Lift. So not sure who's doing the translating, but that seems to be the culprit. -Judy

A pork chop is a simple affair. A good soup, although it doesn't have many calories, is a more serious meal. I lived in the States for 10 years, and meat can be faked, but soup like in Poland cannot be reproduced in the States.

The soup from the luch menu was Kapusniak, not żurek. Kapuśniak is a sauerkraut soup. About the next one, It's not bigo. It's bigos. Also it's not a broth with cabbage and meat, but it's literally a fresh cabbage, sauerkraut, few types of meats, mushrooms, dried plums, and spices cooked together for 2 days;)

But if it was Kapuśniak, it also was delicious. I can appreciate that the waiter may have misheard me or I might have misunderstood what I was getting.
And the bigos (sorry for missing the s at the end) I ate was very brothy, even if it's not supposed to be. There was plenty of liquid I was able to sop up at the end, enough that I thought that might be the reason it wasn't in a bread bowl. -Judy
@@FindingGinaMarie It was my assumption, because it looked nothing like żurek, and had some veggies inside, which just says that, this soup is not żurek anymore;) It could be also zalewajka, or barszcz biały, which are other sour rye soups we have, and they have some veggies inside, but colour was well... different. They should be creamy white. The video was really enjoyable, thank you:) We just treat our food, as a national heritage;) Probably bigos was made mostly from fresh cabbage, because it's not the season for the sour one yet. That's why it was quite brothy I guess. Actually bread bowl is a thing created for tourists mostly. In not tourist-oriented places, no one does it.
Okay, interesting. Thanks for letting me know. Kevin was giving me a hard time for continuing to order żurek, so if I was unknowingly sampling other soups, that's awesome. They all were really tasty! And as an Italian where arguments are legendary about even whether you call your sauce "sauce" or "Sugo" or "gravy" and whether they all are the same or different, I can understand the Polish being particular about their food! Interesting about the bigos and fresh cabbage. That was probably the situation. And good to know that perhaps what I tasted, while probably too wet to be a "good" bigos, was hopefully not a touristy version! We have an episode on our impressions of Krakow coming out today. Hopefully we can do some justice to the city, even if it will be somewhat imperfectly. There are so many highlights that we already know we didn't talk enough about all of it. -Judy
@@FindingGinaMarie Well, polish cuisine is mostly sour, because in slavic cuisines, the most common ways to preserve food are smoking ang fermentation. We have a soup called ogórkowa, which is made from fermented sour cucumbers (fermented naturally, not i vinegary brine like ghurkins), we have sour cabbage soups like kapuśniak, solanka (solianka in Ukrainian), and kwaśnica, which is smoky and connected with Tatra mountais region. We also make szczawiowa / zielony barszcz which is a sour soup made with fresh sorrel. We have barszcz czerwony, which is incredibly rich in taste broth cooked with fermented red beets, served mostly with "uszka" which are small tortelini like dumplings, with meat, or wild mushrooms. There is also Barszcz Ukraiński, which is a national dish of Ukraine, and one of the favourite soups in eastern Poland. It's a rich in vegetables, and meat soup made of beef and beets - ideal for winter. Well, those are the ones I recommend, from probably about 300-400 soup types you can find in Poland. You should also try Grzybowa, which is a wild mushroom soup, made from fresh mushrooms, so eaten between july and november. I forgot to say, that our cuisine is incredibly seasonal, and full of 2-4 weeks periods, when you eat mostly certain things;)

I just realise that you are doing gastronomic travel also, rather retirement travel per se 😊When overseas, I like to explore breakfast places because in the early morning, the restaurants are quieter and have a more calming ambience (everybody just woke up!) Was it your channel or another channel that mentioned the importance of packing a weighing scale for slow travel? 😊 I am thinking that it may actually be a good idea, so that we will know whether we are gaining weight or losing weight during the long travel. I guess stable weight is a quick proxy for our general health condition ? But yet another WEIGHTY item to pack in our luggage !!
Hi Mike, Yes, we are eating our way across the world! We intended to cook while we were in Krakow, but sometimes the food is too good to pass up, and so many experiences of a place are tied to food. We try generally to be judicious about it and balance things when we can.
We often forego eating out during other times in order to be able to grab a cappuccino at a cafe because that makes Kevin happy, so I can appreciate your point about breakfast places.
And yes, we travel with a bodyweight scale and a small food scale (which helps for cooking). Eating out is no joke, and it is very easy to blink and put on 5 or more pounds, so we try to keep somewhat of an eye on it! And yes, the bodyweight scale weighs 2.2 pounds, but if it keeps our weight down, it's a net even or better. 😉 Thank you for continuing to watch and comment, Mike. We really appreciate you! -Judy
Hello, your goulash really looks as average as you say. My fave way to eat it is "placek po zbójnicku" or "placek po węgiersku" so hungarian or outlaw's pancake. It's basically similar to what you've had but denser and more cheese.
My favourite way to eat potato pancakes is with sour cream and maybe smoked salmon. But you can do whatever.
With bigos if I wanted to go all the way out I'd put the butter on my bread and put the stew on it. It shouldn't be very soupy.
Sorry, the third pierogi translate as Ruthenian, not Russian. Different place. Not my fave as well.

In Poland not so much as in worse countries but still some bad places there are. Especially in Zakopane and some parts of the coastline. Try to find sites that rate those establishements or someone trusty local. Don't trust random people or single recommendations. And never get into first spot you see in touristy area. Walk around into secondary streets a little. If those places are full they are probably much better than those on the main street. @@FindingGinaMarie

The downside so far of Vienna is (1) we have a lot of content to produce, (2) we detoured for a few days to Amsterdam, and (3) we aren't in the center of the city. It's not a deal breaker because transit is good, but it's time and money we don't always want to spend. We've got two more weeks to try to really indulge in the spirit of Vienna! I've had my share of goulash, but it's been typically made with a tomato sauce base, ground beef, pasta, and spices.
