    Through Ancestry, I discovered that George Washington’s grandfather is my 11x great grandfather on my maternal side. Louis L’Amour wrote a book about a 3rd great grand-uncle who was a notorious desperado.

      My great grandaunt was related to General George Washington who was of English & American landed gentry.

    Skirvin is a big and famous name here in Oklahoma too. Definitely a connection between her family and the prestigious Skirvin Hotel.
    Okay, I wrote the above before they talked about the Skirvin Hotel 😆

    Sarah,,,your family originates from the Melungeon peoples,,,who are Portugese people who were explorers of this continent.....look up the history if the Melungeon peoples of the Apalachian mountains......very interesting.....How did I know???...the family name Cannady was one of the names of the Melungeon peoples of the SE USA.....

      My great great grandfather was a Melungeon from Lecher County Kentucky. His Dad fought Union during the Civil War, then George Washington Collins decided to elope with the next door neighbor's endentured bond servant girl, Katherine Morton & go several hours north into our section of North Eastern Kentucky, Carter County.

      That was a myth passed down to cover the real truth in a racist time. The dna shows they come from Melungeons are the offspring of sub-Saharan African men and white women of northern or central European origin. Many of then descend from white female indentured servants who had children with enslaved black men. Because their mother's were free they weren't enslaved

      @@wellman0708 Cool beans cuz! Do you have a copy of @DawnDBoyerPhD Canaday book (2021)? Last year, my husband figured out that he and I were 8th Canaday cousins to each other! smile! I also have the Canaday Family History, Gum, Somerville book by Charles M. Cannaday (c. 1928). Are you on Ancestry?
