Amen! Praise God! What an graceful man that singing this hymn in such majestic way! "Died He for me, who caused His pain? For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! how can it be That Thou, my God, should die for me?"
Dear Samuel, I am a classically trained high lyric baritone. I want to let you know that I played this version of this beloved hymn four times back to back because there is so much merit in this arrangement. First, I appreciated the use of a variety of melodic and harmonic devices to adorn the accompaniment, such as a melodic bass line instead of a bass line that is angular and choppy, the balance of conjunct and disjunct melodic lines between the soprano and the bass line, the use of chromatic harmonies in a taistful way, such as secondary dominant chords, secondary leading tone diminished seventh chords, common tone diminished seventh chords, etc. Second, many contemporary worship leaders today sing with a technique that is not healthy, such as using a breathy, raspy tone, using an abrupt, groaning onset to start the sound, they utalize a tone that is straight and full of tension, and they cannot be understood due to their poor diction. They believe that a raw, unpolished sound is the best for worship. After all, they argue that Psalm 100:1 declares to "make a joyful noise unto the LORD." For this reason, I do not listen to most contemporary worship leaders anymore. When I came across this video, my jaw dropped in amazement because even though you are not singing with a sound that is classical, your sound is very natural with a consistent, spinning vibrato and your diction is very sparkly. although I believe that you could have sung the f sharps with less tension by covering them, this performmance was hands down the best contemporary version of this hymn that I have ever heard! Finally, the violin enhanced the meaning of the text so much in this recording! Please upload even more videos because I want to hear you sing other hymns! God bless you!!!
Long my imprisoned spirit lay, Fast bound in sin and nature's night; Thine eye diffused a quickening ray- I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee. The story of my Salvation --- I was dead in my trespasses and sins --- HE made me alive .... HE gave me a new heart..... It was all His doing!
Very, very moving. Not only does Mr. Wilson have polished and masterful control of his amazing voice, he also has depth of emotion which cannot be taught and transcends the entire listening experience. Such a beautiful rendition. So profoundly piercing with meaning. Listening to this is like a baptism. Thank you, Mr. Wilson. From your mouth to God's ears.
Such powerful singing! It is surely from a SPIRIT -led awareness that the wretched soul is no more, praise be To The LORD JESUS Who paid our debts - paid in full.
Grateful to a Savior who replaced me on the cross of shame, shedding His Deity, and cloaking Himself in humility of the human condition, He yielded Himself even to death, all for me to gain Grace, Glory and Life unending in the Anointed, Glorified Christ. May I run this race with my eyes steadfastly set on Him, so that in the end I will not have run in vain.
@michael Harrison, not trying to be pedantic but Christ did not "shed" His deity; he temporarily laid aside the visible glory of it. here's a brief but decent article that covers the idea of kenosis: www.theaquilareport.com/10-things-you-should-know-about-the-kenosis-controversy/
. . . Just wanted to hear these words; had no idea I would hear this voice-brilliant brother. What a gifted musician. Bishop Frederick Tolbert, AME, lives on. SUCH A BLESSING!
Mr. Clay, I am so happy that you enjoyed this song. Its one of my favorites. I appreciate the time you took to leave me a comment. May God, richly bless you. Samuel Wilson
1 And can it be that I should gain An int’rest in the Savior’s blood? Died He for me, who caused His pain? For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! how can it be That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me? Amazing love! how can it be That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me? 2 ’Tis mystery all! The Immortal dies! Who can explore His strange design? In vain the firstborn seraph tries To sound the depths of love Divine! ’Tis mercy all! let earth adore, Let angel minds inquire no more. ’Tis mercy all! let earth adore, Let angel minds inquire no more. 3 He left His Father’s throne above, So free, so infinite His grace; Emptied Himself of all but love, And bled for Adam’s helpless race: ’Tis mercy all, immense and free; For, O my God, it found out me. ’Tis mercy all, immense and free; For, O my God, it found out me. 4 Long my imprisoned spirit lay Fast bound in sin and nature’s night; Thine eye diffused a quickening ray, I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee. Alive in Him, my living Head, And clothed in righteousness Divine, Bold I approach the eternal throne, And claim the crown, through Christ my own. Bold I approach the eternal throne, And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
Love this rendition - the song was one of my father's favorites, and he just passed away on 1/28/21. Could I use this in a memorial tribute as background music for a video of his Zoom service and slideshow that I want to be made available on CZcams for people that couldn't catch the Zoom? I will gladly give you credit.
brother, thank you so much, love this. I'm a 58 year old white guy and just a few minutes before seeing this posted the comment below on my fb acct. with a link to another version of this song well done by a church that was diverse in race and age: "who Listens to Bon jovi, Michael jackson, daft punk, Guns and roses, Linkin Park, bill withers, Nirvana and mid-to high liturgy Gospel music like a single soundtrack" ? Seriously; like, who does that? ME!!! I'm not confused; I just really love a lot of music, but nothing, and I mean nothing- not one single song, has a better "back-story" than this one I'm linking and I love not only the song but the diverse "complexion" and even the ages of the vocalists. I realize some of you may not understand or even agree, that's ok; but for me this is awesome:czcams.com/video/sQeIGbKqiw8/video.html God bless you Samuel, looking forward to being in the same choir one day (rev. 7:9-12). blessings.
This song is sung much better the British way. In the echo of each verse the last 2 lines are repeated, hence 'Tis mercy all immense & free For Oh my God it found out me.is repeated in the second verse, My chains fell off, my heart was free is repeated in the 4th verse - which you omitted.
This is how you sing this hymn!! Thank you for giving it wings! You are the standard all others will compare themselves
Amen! Praise God! What an graceful man that singing this hymn in such majestic way!
"Died He for me, who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, should die for me?"
It uplifts my spirit to praise Him who loved & died for us ...
I remember when Sam was already a very good gospel musician when he was a teenager.
This hymn is my personal testimony, beautifully sung.
this is the best version so far❤

Thank you brother, this was wonderful and I share the sentiments deeply with the song
