- The Army Corps of Engineers, which will have a lead role in reopening the Port of Baltimore, gave reporters a closeup view of the Dali and the mangled Francis Scott Key Bridge. The bodies of four workers who were on the bridge are still missing. The NTSB interviewed those who were on the ship when it crashed. NBC News' Tom Costello reports.

Imagine, your job is to fix potholes all over the city. The one day you’re fixing potholes on that bridge, a ship hits it and it collapses, all while on your lunch break. 😢
I know. A lunch break typically means you're half way done with your shift too. So sad. I can't even imagine what it must've felt like dropping hundreds of feet and then icy cold water filling up inside your vehicle, and you don't know how to swim, and then 4,000 tons of metal crash down on you pushing you deeper into the water.
@@Cyko.. Thanks for cheering us up.
@@Cyko..-- And -- as always -- all the people doing any *real* work are minorities and people of color -- people who might not have even understood the warning when it came out on the radio. This country was built and continues to be built and maintained on the backs of immigrants and poor people of color. They do all of the work and most of the dying and all the Trump humpers can do in their endless insolence is denigrate them. :(
It just made your day that much longer
I can imagine without some random in the comment section thinking he's being euradite and wisdomatic telling me to.
It hurts to know they were on a break in their cars because if the mayday alert got to them just a little bit sooner, 20, 30 seconds maybe they would have been able to escape...

When they really lean on it, and you're starting to wonder "what the heck" you better watch out

The fact that the workers were on their break makes it even worse, if they were working, they most likely would've been able to react to the ship coming and step on the gas off the bridge, but since they were on their break in their cars, they had absolutely no idea.
Just imagine sitting in your car, taking a break from working at one in the morning, and the bridge just falls out from under you.
Just horrible.

Every day 15 million USD $
😂😂 but tax payers are going to pay for all of it.
Since the port of Baltimore supplied the dirty fuel that caused the ship's engines to cut out, maybe the shipping company can sue Baltimore.

Just touching that water is hazardous
When they alerted to have the bridge closed off from traffic going across it. Did anybody alert the workers on the bridge?
This is indeed strange that communication with workers didn't reach out well despite the measures !
Yes, they did. But I assume they probably use radios, at least initially, so if the workers weren't close to a radio, they may not have heard. And they were in the middle span of a 3 mile long bridge, and the part of the bridge that's longest from the main span to the land is longest on that side.
It happened really fast. From the first alarm to the crash was 5 minutes. Asking the police to close the bridge happened less than 2 minutes before the crash, when they realized dropping anchor wasn’t enough.
Someone should explain why the ship throttle up to turn hard prior to hitting the bridge. And why there seems to be explosions on the bridge itself.
The ship sent out a May day, but did they start sounding the ships whistle continuously to alert people on the Bridge what was coming towards them?

I watched that whole press conference. She was referring to the treacherous conditions the NTSB had when they got onto the ship on Tuesday. They had to climb a pilot's ladder made of rope on the outside of the ship to get up to the deck, then the deck was slippery and unsafe, so they weren't able to do as much inspection of the forward part of the ship as they had hoped. It wasn't safe.
Also, the ship was carrying 57 containers of hazardous materials, some of which is possibly leaking into the water. A pontoon containment barrier has been put around the ship, but at the point of that first inspection visit, it wasn't clear what was in the containers that had fallen onto the ship's deck, what might be leaking above the deck they walked on.

There's been concerns about infrastructure, its why everyone was very happy about the infrastructure bill that Biden signed.
And it's the small, unassuming bridges you usually don't notice that make up the majority of bridges with a "poor" rating. The ones that span over a small creek or gully, with no trusses or any remarkable features other than a small section of concrete instead of asphalt. Those are the ones most likely to collapse at random.
Yeah, I think the bridges in Arizona are safe in that regard.
@Fazzel It depends on the age and maintenance of the bridges that are safe

All of our bridges should have fenders to protect them from ship strikes.
Many bridges have concrete dolphins to protect the bents from ship collisions. The Key bridge did not.

Eerily similar to the Summit Venture collision with the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in 1980. And the Francis Scott Key Bridge was built before that accident it appears, so they sadly might not have had the knowledge of the tactics to prevent this sort of accident (like massive concrete "dolphin" pilings to protect the critical structural members). But one is left to wonder if this incident means we will now proactively equip similar bridges with the best known protection measures?

All that money wasted on a certain country at war, could have built a super deluxe bridge here.
When a cargo ship goes under a bridge they should have rails like they do at the railroad tracks to come down so that people cannot cross the bridge and tell the cargo ship has made it safely under the bridge
In Hobart - Australia, they close the Tasmania Bridge to traffic when ships go under, in 1976 a ship hit the bridge causing a span to collapse.
since 2015 increased side of mega cargo ships without modernizing bridge. Ever Green mega cargo got stuck there and it took weeks to dredge around it. Ports Authority has anything to say?
Due to the issues the ship was having. State police blocked both entry points to the bridge prior to the collapse. Otherwise the victim toll would be higher
When you take the number of ships that go under the bridge multiplied by the number of minutes traffic must stop to allow the ship to go under the bridge multiplied by the traffic volume, you will have traffic jams throughout the entire day.
One of the replies I received was from a woman and she said that in Hobart Australia they shut the Bridge down when cargo ships come through because they had a collapsed bridge in 1976. I Googled it and there are four to five cargo ships that go under the bridge at the Baltimore Bay per day they can shut the bridge down just like they did in Australia. Mr Smarty Pants

why was there no tug boats in to begin with? that is the question to ask? if its being taken out of the harbor it needs tug boats to direct it.
Risk vs damage/cost assessment. Tug boats and crew is a limited resource, as so much else. One put it in where the need is assumed to be the biggest, which was not in this location
Question….why wasn’t the ship guided by tugboats from the beginning? You would think that would be standard procedure, especially if they have to pass under bridges.
Risk vs damage/cost potential assessment. Tug boats and crew is a limited resource, as with so much else, one need to use it where the risks are higher. No tug used here, means there are more critical locations where the need is higher for tugs
Because not all the ports have this rule. In some countries, mostly african, asian, tugs are compulsory. In countries like the ones from N America, Europe, tugs are optional most of the times, to reduce costs. If a captain doesn't rquire tugs, when tugs are optional, he receive "a bonus".
Here, onboard of MV Dali, is a huge collection of mistakes based of incompetency, attitude onboard and miscommunication.
This is CRAZY 🌉
I was under impression tugs help bring in the big ships
Only when the company pays up.
The ship, obviously poorly maintained , why else would it lose power?
Ships lose power all the time. But that normally happens when they're out at sea with nothing clsoe by to hit. They have backup generators and spare parts ready to fix anything that goes wrong.
Also, the ship's maintenance records are available online for people with the right credentials. I saw them the other day on another channel. The ship WILL be inspected closely, but its maintenance records are up to date, its condition was good. This ship is not even 10 years old.
What country was that ship registered with? Anyone know?
Singapore. The ship is called Dali. In 16, this ship crashed into the Antwepen pier and went for repairs. This is his second encounter.
Look at the CEO of the shipping company, mitch McConnell sister in law who died under mysterious circumstances
I'm a Canadian on the west coast, was this a draw bridge? If not the video that I watched that morning begs to ask,why for 30 seconds didn't it try to veer off in a different direction. Why did it show the lights blacking out shortly before impact
Who could have ever thought a delicate bridge structure could be plowed into by a giant ship & cause a disaster like this 🤔 Wondering how many other similar bridges are at risk right now.
Um, no that much risk, unless the ship losses power.
Luckily it's a Singaporean cargo ship, if it was a Chinese or Russian cargo ship,
then imagine what the western politicians and media would say..
Don't worry, internet grifters and AI misinformation bots are already coming up with tons of cracked out conspiracy theories. And it's sickening to watch.

People waiting on their AliExpress order 😐
The question remains, there's always tug boats guiding those size ships beyond that same bridge... Where were they when this one was sailing out the harbour?
Strange indeed that no guidance was provided by thug boats !
I'm not saying that's not true, but I've not noticed tugboats doing that before here
Tugs are used to pull the ship away form the dock and guide the ship until it's in the shipping lane and can start to pick up speed. Tugs can't be too close to ships going faster than about 4 knots, and a ship this size needs to get up to 8 knots or more before they have control of their rudder.
Baltimore Harbour is big, plenty of room for a ship this size to make the turn from the docks toward the shipping lane. And the shipping channel is wide. Tugs are not normally needed to help ships once they're in the channel.
@@MrsRubens This explains a lot, but the simulations shown that the boat followed the path very tightly from right side and not perfectly in the middle. I must say that harbour masters would eventually contact ships to warn them if their position is not ideal for going under the bridge.
America's infrastructure is a thing of the past, such a bridge at a major port should never collapse in this way. Moreover, you don't see any guide structures there, so the bridge cannot be hit in this way at all. Anything but safe, in other words, the government can be blamed for it.
They're going to rebuild with a bunch of tech and sensors added to it. Just look at an intersection in any major metro area and you'll see where things are headed. It could be just what we need to get people to put the phone down if the system sends automated tickets to those on the phone. I think it could be a reality soon, when I visited wealthy cities they had audible chimes to indicate changes at the light
The poos took it to the loo 💩 💩 💩
Physics is Physics, a ship of that stature is pretty much unstopable, it would be nearly impossible to create a bridge that wouldn't fail due to such an impact.

When is Danish Shipping Company MAERSK going to write a check to cover the cost of all this ? The Maryland Governor and our senile President seem to think the American Taxpayer should foot the bill .
I had heard today on the radio that the tugboats don't escort ships all the way up to the FSK Bridge. They disperse before then.
So sad 🙏
ik those engineers are stressed out i couldnt imagine trying to figure out that wreck
this is what they live for......unlimited overtime
People who own the ship need to pay 100% to replace the bridge and benefits to the families
Stop embarrassing yourself, please just stop . . .
it will never happen. there is no ship that carries that much insurance.. I would be that there is enough money to replace the boat at the most. The cargo is probably not insured. And cuz its not an US flaged ship.. you can kiss sueing the company goodbye.
I'm a captain and you literally don't have a clue. An investigation will reveal everything that went wrong and who's responsible for what. It's rarely 100% responsibility of a vessel in an accident and responsibility is divided in percentages.

How strange they had prior problems but didn’t secure a tug boat just Incase? They have engineers and and assistance engineers but nobody knows what happened? Bad maintenance is evident, you also have an anchor to drop just in case. Why not have tug boats pulling these foreign ships just in case they fail?
To be honest... even if a tug boat was right there it wouldnt have made much of a difference.. that ship weighs in at almost 100k tons.. good luck pushing that in a fast responce.. im not even sure that a tugboat hooked to the ship... pushing the whole time.. could change the course if the rudder was hard over while it is in motion.
They did clal for tugs as soon as they lost power.
I'm surprised it was able to plow onto the pier without the bottom not stopping it.
Edit - well I guess it probably took a gouge out of the river bottom. But it is sunkk a little at the bow.
Actually the crew informed the Mayor and the authorities just before hitting the ship as they had lost complete control on it due to a huge power loss twice in the vessel. as a result the authorities were able to shut the bridge timely and a major disaster was prevented.
Repent and ask FORGIVENESS of your SINS, and Accept JESUS in to your Life.
Then ask GOD, and say in ( JESUS name ) when you ask GOD for what you need HELP with in your life !
It REALLY works !!!
Perfect example of bidenomics
Perfect example of an ignorant and insensitive statement.
This wasn't an accident, it was a terrorist attack orchestrated by Obama.

OMG this is going to be a big job rebuilding the bridge.
We dredge the canal it means we all work- your people, my people.
A vote for biden is a vote for your demise
Yes, Biden is personally responsible for a malfunctioning fully loaded Sinagporean cargo ship that weighs a trillion tons and is the length of the Empire State Building crashing into a 50 year old bridge. Your stupidity is off the charts. No president would be responsible for this, Biden or Trump.
Biden is Obama's puppet.

Whenever they get around to replacing the bridge, they'll definitely want a stronger, safer design. In recent years cable stayed bridges seem to have become the bridge of choice for most long spans. That seems to be the most likely option here. With a cable stayed bridge you can span longer distances than you can with a truss bridge. This improves safety because the towers will be further away from the center of the shipping lane, making them harder to hit accidentally. The passage under the Key bridge was only around 1100 feet wide. I don't know the physical limits of the cable stayed design, but the Gordie Howe bridge being built between Detroit and Windsor measures around 2800 feet between the towers and it will be the longest cable stayed span in North America when it's finished next year. Ideally they could build a bridge to span the entire waterway, keeping the towers on land, but that's probably not cost effective. The waterway measures around 5200' wide on Google Earth and the current world record for this bridge type is only 3622'. A suspension bridge could span the distance easily, but they have their own constraints that may not make one suitable here.
"Dosent swim?!" You mean "Can't swim?!"
I caught that too!
As a construction worker I would’ve never thought of this until this tragic incident. But I truly feel osha should make a new rule to wear if you’re working on a bridge a hi vis life vest should be apart of your PPE
Five days later and they just now get around to interviewing the crew
