I didn’t expect this Jaguar to sound like this..

  • The Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar is an interesting guitar that I've seen a bunch on social media lately (or variants of it... even just jaguar shaped guitars from other manufacturers). Maybe it's just me, but I've never really thought of it as a metal guitar.. But that begs the question, is it? Will it chug? Can I make it squeal?

    I like the Jaguar/Jazzmaster shape.
    I modified my Squier Affinity Jazzmaster and turned it into a single humbucker metal machine, tuned to drop C, but it has a 25.5 inch scale length, so it can handle drop C pretty well.

    I had one of these as my main guitar for about 10 years bought it in 2011 when I was at university. Sold it this year as a trade in for a PRS thought it was about time to move on after a decade, but instantly regretted selling it off. Bought a squier Classic Vibe 60s Jazzmaster soon after as a semi-replacement but still looking to buy a Jaguar again I think this is the shape I'm most comfortable with.

    I think those vintage designs definitely have a good aesthetic, but advancements in instrument design have kind of made certain choices or elements of those older designs apparent. The bridge and the tuners, for example. Also, I’d agree that a 24” scale lengths is definitely a bit short for down tuning. 24” in general is short for me, as I have pretty long arms and that pushes things a little too close to ukulele territory for me, and I’m not making a commercial jingle for Target or playing any Hawaiian music anytime soon.

  • @3badthebad
    @3badthebad Před 3 lety +1

    I think if you drop a set of EMG retroactives, and a hipshot bridge n there, it will become a metal machine, and it will still keep that classic vibe with a modern twist

  • @weinderdog1184
    @weinderdog1184 Před 3 lety +2

    That's pretty neat. I'm not cool so I don't really notice when things trend one way or another. If it feels nice I'd upgrade the bridge nut and tuners if it was worth playing again, if not probably sell it for what seems to be more than what you paid for it. Or hold out and see if they go for more later down the road.

  • @RoachDoggJr2112
    @RoachDoggJr2112 Před 2 lety +3

    Here's my two cents-
    I see a lot of people in the comments saying things about the design features and the scale lengths being not the best for "metal." That may be true if you're playing modern metal, djent, thrash, or any of that stuff. But if you think that's all metal is, well, I'd have to ask... how's freshman year of high-school going? (Not a dig against you btw lol, just a joke)
    Seriously though, while those features may not be ideal for any sort of modern genres... this kind of guitar is quite practical for more stoney and doomy music. That style of music basically relies on vintage/vintage-minded gear. Tube amps, passive pickups, and of course guitars like that Squier, along with Les Pauls and SGs and stuff like that. I think the problems with tuning stability is probably the cheap, pot-metal bridge and tuners. If you swapped those with proper fender parts, you'd see an improvement in tuning stability for sure.
    In short, Jags might not be the perfect guitar for modern metal (without substantial upgrades that is), but I think they're killer for Stoner/Doom/Desert styles of metal.
