Man, I love it when the metal heads show up in the comments! Get an SNK VHD here www.cultfx.com , If you love fun death metal stuff like this and want to help support this channel, join us at www.patreon.com/taylordanley !
SNK makes a VH-300 if you want the full Ampeg VH140c in a more compact head and 300 watts. SNK also makes a two channel version of the pedal with the Clean channel too. Also the Crate GX-130c is basically the same amp - also a 90’s amp. Look at me posting before watching the whole video - you and a lot of us channel fans knew this. That version does look great!
now play some big midwest emo chords with that setup!
Pedal sounds like a pedal, it adds the proper character, but still, huge difference.
Exactly and I'm pretty sure any high gain distortion with an EQ pedal and noisegate could approximate this tone
@@mikerauter1859 and compressor
I had the SNK VHD pedal but I upgraded to the SNK VH300 amp which is a 300 watt VH140C clone. It sounds awesome!
On a sad note... I had the VH140C in the early 90s but gave it to a friend when I hung up playing guitar in a band for a while. I miss that amp!
It's a great amp. Probably not worth the price today sadly, but glad there's people out there keeping the circuit alive!
@@TaylorDanley I have to say that the original sounds slightly better still. It's slightly brighter, like it has more presence or something. Nothing that a good EQ pedal can't add.
i did the same in the 90 s but my friend does not want to sell it back to me :(
One band who wasnt a death metal band but often had a great death metal tone & riffs that teetered in that genere was Acid Bath.
Taylor Danny is so underrated but I love his videos
Brutal yet articulate. I want one.
Exactly my thoughts
Surprised you haven’t tried Scot’s other stuff since he also has variants including the 300w VH300 amp. Hope to see more SNK videos!
Yeah Scott and I have never worked together directly. Simon (cultfx) and I are good friends, so that's how this whole thing came about.
I like Death Metal and Carlos Santana. it just depends on if I'm smoking Indica or Sativa, haha.
Lol jimmy buffet today dying fetus tommorow
And then you mix them and end up listening to Six Feet Under.
@@TaylorDanley i actually listen to the haunted by sfu still i did a cover of lycanthropy and left the album in my playlist
Great video dude! loved how in depth u went thank you!!!
This is what I’ve been looking for!
Awesome review, dude. Keep it up!
Thank you!
It's INSANE what those Ampeg and Crate amps go for. Glad we have companies like SNK.
As others have mentioned, check out his other stuff. It's ALL sick.
The crate are still pretty cheap
@@Redraptor6214 they SHOULD be cheap, but I still see them going for well over $500. One on Reverb right now for $700. They're not VH140C prices, but they should never been that high in price.
@@Defleshuary I found 2 on market place for around $300
@@Redraptor6214 good! That's a fair deal
Dude, I am gonna get this pedal! The tone sounds absolutely death metal on my surround sound system. I might buy the version in the link to show support! Thanks, man. Keep these videos coming! Your channel rocks!!!!
Sounds great!
The pedal and the amp both sound killer 🔥 The pedal is cleaner sounding to my ears. Tbh, you cant go wrong with either one 🔥
Luc Lemay also used the VH-140C
💪
And now using it again! In all the Gorguts live vids I've seen lately, they're plugged into Ampegs.
@@Admiral_BongoI saw them at MDF and both Luc and Kevin were using VH-140Cs
One of those pedals I always wanted to try. Sounds massive and I love the song in the end.
Damn that pedal sounds good! 🤘
Awesome man! Old School Death Metal is my thing! Realy cool! The VH140C is great, such a classic! Great tone dude!
PS: Rob makes really amazing guitars! Always really rad and cool stuff!
Yeah I love it as well. I thought about selling when the prices first sky rocketed, but I know I'd regret it.
Dude snk getting more out there awesome
I have the Fleshrot V2, and I LOVE Shea's take on the circuit. This ABSOLUTELY kills it as well and I love what SNK does!
Shea made some very cool tweaks for sure! This is pretty much 1:1 IME
Yea rad instruments has such cool stuff. Fucking rad pedal too
Love the SNK VHD! Sounds amazing with an HM2 in front.
You should also try the Master Effects Marauder, it's a preamp clone of the Peavey Supreme 160, another of the early death metal solid state amps. I believe Dying Fetus used them at some point.
Would love some more SNK content, as mentioned by others the VH300 amp would be sick, but I’d be more interested in seeing demos of his Bludgeon and RG300ES amps if possible
Definitely going to buy the amp head the pedal sounds great too keep up the great work I love watching your videos
Nightmarer - Deformity Adrift, was one of my fave metal albums from 2023, js
this channel is so informative man, we all appreciate it. what’s your favorite cab? Mesa OS straight?
That sounds so sick 💀🤘
I'm a big fan of that sound, so I love it personally.
@@TaylorDanley big fan too dude, i seriously considered bought the preamp pedal or the vh300 AMP. I have a 8100 too but i don't know, i prefer the ampeg sound, it sounds more massive. Imagine the 8100 and the vh 140c in the same mix...funny that nobody make a plugin of it
The pedal sounds and looks badass. It is odd to me that no company has attempted a VH140C amp sim. You'd think Ugritone or Audio Assault or even Audiority would have done one by now.
700TH VIEW!!!! dope tones btw🤘🤘🤘
Catterpillar now my favourite band and guitar gear brand. Some sturdy metal stuff there.
I used a VHT pittbull ultralead my entire live metal guitarist days, Im back into it now on bass, Hartke Bi-Amp
First and foremost, shoutout to RIP Custom Guitars, definitely deserve all the praise and hype they receive.
Funny you mention Dying Fetus, I love all their tones, but my favorite is the Reign Supreme tone, and the pedal I use is Amptweaker’s TMP2; nails all high gain tones, and it was designed by James Brown.
If Cult FX were to do a special blackout of the TMP2 I’d buy one as soon as they went up.
That single YES was gold lol
Simon ❤
The pedal sounded sick. It was almost identical to the real amp in a mix. But the real star of this episode is that guitar. Not sure if I would ever use the single coil in the neck, but it is there. I love pointy guitars that still manage to be comfortable to play in a sitting position.
Neck single coils are great for cleans and soulful leads. That works in a metal setting from time to time.
The guitarist of cryptopsy uses a neck single coil in his solos.
Simon busting out that broken glass crowbar riff
Alot of people overlook the Ampeg SS Line. Check out Assuck. Heavy tones out of that amp. Definitely regret selling my combo.
Yeah like I said, I think these amps were used because you used to be able to get them cheap... They were loud and did the sound. Then they became sort of legendary by happen stance, not because they were novel in any way.
@@TaylorDanley Well... Suffo (Despise the Sun and Souls to Deny, HOLY FUCK IT'S THICC), Mortal Decay and 3-5th Dying Fetus albums did actually have great tones achieved with these Ampegs. Internal Bleeding have been a mixed bag (some records of theirs sound cool, but on others the tone is abysmal, not in the cool way). And now Sanguisugabogg use boosted VH140C's and their tone is crazy good. In addition, the voicing is basically "5150 with the mid control shifted to ~1000Hz".
Had the ampeg 140c. Gotta say the VHD is super close. I have the dual channels preamp model. Has pres and resonance. Absolutely killer, run it into my fryette ps100 for power. Cant go wrong with em. As much as i love the ampeg not many talk about the reliability issues these amps have. If i were someone now looking for that sound id get the snk vhd amp head from Scot. 1000$ new. Super light too. Paid 200$ for the 140c back in 2020. Traded for a mesa cab. Wish i still had it BUT, the SNK VHD is insanely good
TBH I don’t think it’s reliability with these amps, I think it’s just that they are really old now (even vintage some would say), and its unlikely they were ever maintained since they are solid state. I think people assume capacitors and plastic ribbon connectors last forever 😆
@@TaylorDanley true! Ive just ran into the dirty fx loops and such. Easy fix with deoxit. But my old crate gx130 had chorus problems which is facilitated by the stereo power, and now with my ss140c. Needs to go to a tech soon. The SNK is perfect in my eyes. Mostly because its made well and its new. Amps will all eventually fail, ive definitely beat on a few of mine throughout the years. Wish they would last forever. Lol 😆
Yes sir !! Do a video of you your influential death metal albums/songs/bands/tones.
Ps I recently traded for a Crate GX600 👍
You know, I did one back in the day but no one watched it. I think it's up on my patreon now maybe 🤔 I'll check
Simons a badass
sweet. you got andy mckee on your channel.
Hahaha
I've only been about death metal on thrash metal for 35 years
killer pedal and Scot is an awesome guy as well. Go get one if you don't already have one!
Just a heads up to anyone who's interested, there's an Ampeg VH140C head in Cedar Rapids, IA for sale on marketplace. Without looking up the listing, I think the seller is asking like $400 or $500. Cosmetics are about 9/10. 🤷🏼♂️
I'm starting to think those old school death metal toned are superior to modern metal tones. They are thinner, more abrasive ect, but they are unflinchingly aggressive and ugly.
Did I hear some Crowbar riffs in there?? 4:12 🤘
Indeed!
lol. 2500 for y 140C. They were 1/4 of that 5 years ago. Internet and inflation have killed it. I have my VHT pedal. My Happy Puppy, my Misanthrope so I’m good.
🤘🤘🤘
What’s that second band in the intro after CC, sounds super brooral
Hey brah can you tell me what kind of guitar is that red & black ? Where can i get that small frame fret board
I think gallery of suicide was the first cannibal corpse song I heard and remember just feeling so creeped out and slimy and gross, and that haunting sort of droning melody, ahh good times
Gallery was the first album I ever bought, and it was based on the cover (when shopping for CDs was still a thing). I remember thinking "wtf is this, what am I listening to?"
I bought a VHD from Scott (still have it). Then oddly enough, found a deal on reverb, for both a VH140c AND an original matching 2x12 I couldnt pass up. Happy to say I still have both and love them. I also have a GX130c 2x12....plug the pedal into your Crate....youll thank me later. If you havent already lmao.
🧐 Hmmm. I'll have to try that!
@@TaylorDanley Honestly I really hope you do, and please let me know what you think.
This pedal sounds... SSSSSSIIIIIIICCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!
So the pedal definitely sounds a little cleaner, but the amp sounds more 'open'. There's a bit of a constrained tone to the pedal compared to the amp, which might be solved with a bit of eq, though honestly I'm not sure if I'm describing what I'm hearing very well. They both sound awesome though.
Plug and chug.
Taylor what were the first 2 videos u referred to about tone?before u referenced death and cannibal corpse?
Cannibal corpse "staring through the eyes of the dead" and Suffocation "surgery of impalement"
@@TaylorDanley i had a feeling it was cannibal just wasnt sure about about the second one which i am now going to have a look at do you know the song title?
Are the riffs at minute markers 5:45 and 9:07 songs available to listen/stream? Amazing playing.
9:07 isn't yet, but it will be on my Spotify (Taylor Danley) eventually. Not sure about the riff Simon was playing!
It's worth mentioning how many old school 90s death metal bands have abandoned their former sterile high gain sound that hardly works live anyways for a more conventional tone. Take Suffocation self titled album for example. Probably nobody would ever deny that they still sound brutal although their guitar tone on this record is a lot more "earthy". Some people seem to fail to understand that more gain doesn't always mean more brutal.
Absolutely, a lot of gain doesn't sound heavier. If anything it's the opposite. It's a pet peeve of mine hearing young (or even not so young) bands playing with cranked gain - it just turns the guitars to a smooth, inoffensive and inaudible mush. You need to set your gain to before the attack starts getting weaker and the bottom starts getting flubby.
Very high gain might sound good when practising on your own or even when recording, but in a live setting not so much. Actually listening to how your band sounds strangely seems a skill that not many possess.
@@Ksrwilhelm Absolutely this! I can confirm that many guitarists have a wrong understanding of how aggressive sound is created. Its a simple rule: Gain always fights attack and attack is more important when you want to sound heavy. Heavy musicians are even scared of more guitar dynamics because it gets significantly more difficult to play e.g. death metal with a less distorted sound. But that's the key for the bite you are looking for.
amp sounds way better but the pedal is a solid option for the majority of people
I score the VH-140C 212 for 100bucks just months ago 🤘🔥🔥🔥
In the end mix the amp has a little more clarity, the pedal has a bit more high mid focus, slightly less clarity. For the price tho it sounds great. Prefer the amp 🔥
what is the name of the intro song? sounds insanely good and evil
I'm more interested in sounds like Tomb of the Mutilated, Sinister's Diabolical/Hate, and Deicide's Once Upon.
I'm currently recording with Metallica: Blackened impulse response, using a SD invader (bridge).
🤘FUCK YEAH! 🤘
💪
Secret face by death ☠️ & sacred serenity or arch enemy ,the. World is yours. 🪁
Every band i knew in the 90s had crate blue voodoo heads and cabs
Still have a 120 watt 1/2 stack.
Korey if you're still out there - I still want the proto for this pedal!
[lmao sorry I lowballed you, you took it well, i would've whined about it]
now play some big midwest emo chords with that setup!
What is guitar tuning?
To think just a few years ago you could get all 3 of those amps dirt cheap I would see each one of those in the $150- $250 range consistently
Heads up^ I did buy the Joyo Argos and on video it comes across different than in real life = I'm going to give it another try but - looks like I will be getting my MXR Full Bore Metal pedal fixed by "Jim Dunlop" they will Remanufacture it for a $50,oo fee includes return shipping & a warranty.
I'll save you the trouble watching this video (I didn't). EMG pickups and Peavey 5150.
What’s the song at 1:21?
The real deathmetal sound is entombed and dismember ❤
Now to get a Crate XLP clone.
Whats the song at 1:17?
Surgery of Impalement by Suffocation.
Ok but what death song is that?
I keep asking ola to make a plugin version of the chug pedal
The chuggin plugin
GENIUS
Seeing an Ampeg VH-140C for sale for 2500 dollars makes me regret trading mine, heavily…
Getting amps on the cheap sounds like what happened in doom metal. Lots of used orange amps in their setups.
Interesting. I'm very out of the loop on Doom or Orange amps!
that's a nucking futs guitar
💪
woo first
👏👏👏👏
Plug in and chug out
Ooo That's actually a lot better!
@TaylorDanley I'm sure it goes without saying that you have my blessing to run with it if you want.
second ig
So what I’m seeing now is that I probably shouldn’t have gotten rid of my 140c for $200….. oops
BIG WHOOPS. You couldn't have known though...
Simon cheated. Everything sounds good when you play crowbar!
Yeah I couldn't follow it
Way over priced for cheap surface mount circuit.
alibaba that shit
It’s like 225 that’s not a lot
@Redraptor6214 eh, this guy has "fart" in his username, don't take it too seriously
@@Redraptor6214 Surface mount was made to be cheap and automated to increase the efficiency of mass production. It was not designed for quality, service, or improved longevity. The pedal is overpriced.
Smd IS NOT inferior to through hole components
I don't usually consider Dying Fetus to be Death Metal. They arrived extremely late to the scene '91 (as most death metal bands started around 84 or so). They fell in to the latter part of metal for me with the likes of Nu Metal and other sub genres. Their image was very different to me also. I don't know why but I never put them in to the category of Obituary, Death, Deicide or Pestilence. Of course this is just my opinion or experience...maybe cause I stopped listening to newer death metal bands after 90.
Agreed
I hear you. They're essentially a non genre specific metal band. they've taken the death metal sound and vocals but their music is not creepy, evil, or morbid. If anything its core is anchored in baseball cap and shorts wearing slam.
Master effects pedal blows this away
