The best hot hatches of the 1980s

  • While the 1970s was the decade that birthed the hot hatch and the 1990s really saw it explode into the mainstream, it was the 1980s that saw the major growth of the smallest sportscars in the world.
Following on from such cars as the first Volkswagen Golf GTI, the Renault 5 Alpine, Simca 1100 TI and Vauxhall HS Chevette, the hot hatch scene exploded in the decade of Thatcher, Reagan and the end of the Soviet Union. Stars included the Peugeot 205 GTI, Ford Escort RS Turbo, Renault 5 GT Turbo and second generation Golf GTI. Out of all the legions of hot hatches that emerged, these are our favourites.

The dodge omni was originally a simca/Talbot horizon, or chrysler horizon in the UK, a car originally designed and build in France, the biggest engine in Europe though was the 1,4l "poissy" engine a quit efficient engine but could only develop 70hp, in America they had a shelby version doing 175hp, I have also heard the Australian had a 2,5l bi-turbo. Also, the car was based on a simca 1100, which coincidently was also the first hot hatch ever historically with the simca 1100 ti, note that the horizon was an inspiration for the Talbot sunbeam, which had a lotus version, a quite efficient design, the french however had a concept of the horizon based on the 205 gti when peugeot bought them back in 1978

How can you not feature or even show a photo of the original Mk1 Golf GTI, arguably the original hit hatch when you briefly feature the Fiesta Supersport, fore runner of the XR2 and brief shots of an Astra GTE mk1 ? It sold from 1979 to 1984 so undoubtedly an eighties hit hatch. This unfortunately lets the video down.

Sadly, the Jetronic is the source of the problems. So we use a programable EFI like Fueltech.
