  • Geoff and Heather grow over 150 varieties of dahlia. Here are the types that grew best in 2022.
    Dahlias
Dahlias start flowering in July and will continue to flower until the first frost, so they have a very long flowering season.
Their flowers come in many sizes from the tiniest pompons to the giant dinner-plate varieties, there are several shapes, including the round ball shaped decorative varieties, the spiky cactus types, the delicately pretty waterlilies and the pin-cushion shaped anemones.
They come in every colour apart from blue, and there are dahlias that reach 9 feet / 3 metres tall, whilst others only reach 18 inches / 40 centimetres.
So there is a dahlia suitable for every garden, and they can even be grown in pots.
Geoff and Heather have been growing dahlias for many years and use the different shapes and sizes to help create a tiered effect in their garden in Cheshire. Together with salvias, fuchsias, and bedding plants they have managed to create a riot of summer colour.
Each September they open their garden to the public as part of the U.K. National Garden Scheme.
In this video, and the other videos in the series, they show you how they manage to do this, providing guidance on how to grow perfect dahlias.

I have just heard that Rossendale Donald won the top award at the U.K. trials. It’s definitely top of my “must have” list!

What a great video. I love seeing these flowers close up and moving rather than in still pictures!

I'm one of the ones who loves the open types, that 'Moonfire' variety is also called 'Sunshine'.

Simply dazzling! Even the ones that are not "up to form". I love them all, bi-color, tri-color, one color....just fascinating flowers. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Enjoy all your videos G&H., we watch them over and over again, constantly learning. Not sure we are a fan of the new Octopus Sparkle though, doesn’t carry the traditional beauty of dahlias to us, each to their own. We’ve made a note of several more varieties from your video we’d like to try. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Hey, that striped dahlia at minute15:26 is perfectly beautiful, if you viewers like it, they can't be wrong ...I find it impressively beautiful, beauty is not synonymous with symmetry as a dahlia flower possesses many dimensions. Keep it. By the way I have a collection of award winning dahlias and more in our garden South America

Octopus Sparkle is love at first sight. Very exciting exhibition and my heart is jumping of joy. Really great seedlings too. Hollyhill Spiderwoman looks awesome. Gwiniff is it the name of that successful orange waterlily? Well, I will see what I can find here in Germany. Lubera, the swiss company, has an edible Black Jack for sale.

I really enjoy your videos Jeff and Heather and think you have some fantastic dahlias. I often watch you on my television and so I’m not able to always give a like but I always do like your presentation. I don’t know whether you ever sell any off but if you did feel inclined to sell either the seedlings or the dahlias that you don’t care I would be very interested to have a go myself with your castoffs. Keep up the good work I’m already looking forward to next year and learning so much from you both. Best wishes for your future gardening

Hi Geoff do you destroy the tubers attacked by spider mites or are they worth keeping?

    • @Dahliaholic
      @Dahliaholic  Před rokem +1

I’ve been told the mites will not affect the tubers, though I would imagine that they won’t be as large as they would have been without mites!
