Kia ora Matt, I have just bought an A6 BiTDI 2014 85000km, it will be towing my 2200kg boat around the New Zealand country side with it, wish me luck!!! I love the unassuming grandpa look, I took my teenagers sons friends for a ride in it..... they said "urgh really, an old mans station wagon" I slammed my right foot to the floor and that dropped their jaws to the floor!

I have a "ballistic missile" 3.0 BiTdi version in Black. Now on 152k miles, had it for 3 years, have no idea what i'll replace it with, it is the best all-rounder i've owned. 0-60 5 and a bit seconds, and if you drive sensibly you get 45 to the gallon, comfortable, fast, and with a private plate on it sits amongst much newer cars very well. Good review - and give the BiTdi a go - it's good fun (it also has the ZF 8-speed tiptronic gearbox).

    Hi Matt
that is my 10p rolling there! Seriously I traded the A6 for the aruba range rover you drove 7 months back. Why do this? Simple, I needed the extra weight to tow my new caravan as the A6 is too light. Powerful certainly but not enough weight. As for MPG, when driving on the motorway (70 MPH had an average 48 MPG) I am anal about servicing hence the gearbox services. But Audi are more expensive than my previous mercs to service. It looks good and was very comfortable as a mway mile muncher, but boring in the best way of trouble free motoring. The front cup holders are useless unless your wrist is double jointed.
    cheers Colin

Replacement air suspension pump can be bought for circa £300 on line and it is a DIY job to replace apparently (located just ahead of the spare wheel well). We had ours replaced at around 45K miles at 4 years at an Audi dealer for £495.
BTW, DSG oil changes are recommended at 38K mile intervals, not 40K.
Our 2013, 242hp A6 Allroad is still rattle free and having done the rear damper bump stops (pulled down, housing cleaned and rubber grease applied) it rides without a squeak. Plus, at speed, the suspension lowers itself to improve aerodynamics and economy.
I recently got a new SQ5 and whilst it's very nice and pretty quick the 8 speed torque convertor auto isn't anywhere near as nice as the 7 spd DSG in the A6 and not being able to afford the Vorsprung model, the SQ5 runs on steel springs instead of air (it's not even an optional extra now).
The A6 Allroad (C7 model, 2011 to 2018) really are great cars.

Dean at Saving Salvage has just exploded the myth that you have to go to Audi for a suspension air pump at mega money. They are now spurious for a fraction of the money asked by Audi. Additionally, the pumps are not always the culprit in " failing suspension" it can (if you are lucky) be DIY repaired by splitting a bracket and cleaning up a small area of corrosion in the alloy and then reassembling.

    • @hughmarcus1
      @hughmarcus1 Před rokem

THey're all basically clones of the original system developed by LR for the Range Rover. Depending on the compressor there'll be repair kits available or a replacement model. Early Disco 3's were common for compressor failure, but owners discovered a heavier 3rd parry model & now everyone fits this.

Great review Matt as usual, I bought an A6 Allroad new in 2005, which I still own, I treated myself to a new 3.0 all singing and dancing Biturbo Allroad in 2016 which as a car, was in every way superior to the 2005 model, faster more comfortable, much more refined and surprisingly frugal. However,,,, as a tow vehicle I could not get it to work… It was ordered from the factory with the towing pack and Audi made several updates to the suspension software but never cured the problem - it used to pitch and roll - and back to back testing with the same trailer and load on the old Allroad never reproduced any problems - so out went the new Allroad after 10 months, part exchanged against an R8 to get the best trade-in price, and we kept the old ‘05 Allroad still performing towing duties, although as a more sedate pace!!!!!
The other annoying thing with the new Allroad was the tech - I live in a rural setting and the auto dimming main beam used to get confused by some warning chevron reflections just when you needed main beam to spot the turn in to my lane…. A very annoying first world problem!! If they could have sorted the towing issues I would have kept it…

I was looking seriously at an Allroad but then saw the Volvo V90 Cross County.
It instantly made the Allroad look totally pipe and slippers. The interior is something else with the most comfortable seats ever. My sole criticism is the auto gearbox has one job yet forgets what it is. This is highlighted by having both a dsg Audi TTS and ZF Z4 M40i which are both telepathic. Having had a Gen 3Volvo V70 for 9 years, the Cross Country was an easy choice. Highly recommended

I had the previous model and the suspension lasted to 150000 before any work and didn’t take it to Audi. Never had any other problems. My new one has 74000 miles and I’ve had it for a year. It will also tow 500kg more than the standard a6, that’s 2500kg so enough for me to tow large cars and it’s great on rough tracks. It’ll do 40mpg on the motorway if sensible. It’s the best family car by far if you don’t want a Range Rover. Make sure you change all the fluids regularly. I wouldn’t go to Audi in my experience. Go for 2017 on of possible to get CarPlay, wireless charging and other goodies it’s also ULEZ compliant. Get the bitdi if you can they’re rare but very desirable with good residuals and when they brought out the new model in 2019 you couldn’t get that engine. Sadly Audi no longer sells the allroad in the UK, only 250 units were sold last year so it’s a rare car.

Informative as ever. Just a quick one, I was behind a Mercedes 300 today, looked new(ish). It looked like a GT, similar stying to an XK. Can't find any "new" versions on the Internet??? You heard/seen them?

The best part is that this model is traditional Quattro with Torsen permanent 4 wheel drive with the 60:40 rear wheel bias power split.

A well cared for A6 diesel is almost bullet proof. Their reputation for being boring is undeserved. Fifth gear did a track test of a A5 diesel vs the iconic Audi Quattro from the 1980s. The Quattro won but by a layer of paint in the difference. We forget just how good modern diesels are, we dismiss 200bhp as not enough whilst ignoring the much more important massive torque from low revs which nearly pulls the bearings off some gearboxes (I'm looking at you Alfa 159 JTDm)
The flexibility and drivability of diesels today is unsurpassed by petrol. I can't believe the yanks completely ignore them.
Anyway, love the channel and how your presenting style and content has evolved. I don't doubt it's a massive amount of work but the thought and effort you put in is evident in the final product and you look like you're enjoying yourself.
    Continued success my man.
    Cheers 🥂

There is no Haldex on these one. They use a torsen diff. They don't need a service (on paper). But new gearbox oil (where the torsen also is located) helped me for less quattro rumble when taking a tight corner at parking speed. (after 200.000km)
About the chain. To replace it, there is no need to remove the engine, only the gearbox (and a lot of other things...). Only on the BITDI it needs to be removed.
But for the rest, great review. Always nice to see reviews from "older" cars that are still pretty up-to-date for today's standards.

Nice car but as you say complicated and expensive if it goes wrong. The simpler A4 seems a better bet or even a Passat or Superb if you need the space and 4WD. Great video as usual.

Great review Matt - I suppose the real question is would you trade a 4.4 TDV8 Range Rover for the A6 All Road ? It probably does 85% of the tasks the RR can do for maybe 50% of the cost. But I guess you pays your money and takes your choice. Both big and complex, demand meticulous servicing and could both bite you in the wallet. Certainly a car I've been considering for quite some time.

My C7 is the best car I have ever had. Was devastated when Audi dropped the allroad for the UK Market. My plan was to replace the C7 three or so years before the copper tops come in and get ten more years of fun. No idea what to do now.

Liked and subscribed! Thanks for the video! I want to buy VW Passat Alltrack 2013 as they are quite expensive, how does that compare to audi A4 and how about Engine, DSG and Hadlex service- how often for 2.0 tdi? And yes agree not many people servoe DSG Gearboxes... I just had mine serviced both Engine and DSG oil and filter changed

Manufacturers only really care about the first 3-5 years of a car's life because this is the warranty period and the common time that first owners (esp businesses) own the car. By the time any issues are apparent, they have usually produced a revised model which they'll claim doesn't have the issues.......

There are still loads of them on roads and for years to come. Even older models. It's some of the older and cheaper Japanese cars that are disappearing fast. One thing is the prestige but they are still better to drive than some newer mediocre cars. Even if the maintenance costs offsets the older Audi or Merc there are still buyers taking a chance.

Great review Matt, I like these but prefer the A4 variant.
Also, I think the A4/5/6’s have a traditional Quattro system that doesn’t require servicing, rather than the haldex found in the A3/TT’s etc.
