    I remember once I was playing DnD with some of my friends. I always had shit luck and always rolled very low numbers, 'twas very frustrating for me... *Except* this one time I was playing a strong character, and I somehow got stuck into a hole in the ground and had to be rescued by another member of the party. The other member threw a rope down into the hole and was going to pull me out... That's when I decided I wanted to, instead, pull them into the hole with me. I think I did it just to screw with that character's player because we had an argument recently, but regardless of the motives, it simply sounded like a great idea in my head and I could not restrain myself. I had a feeling that I simply needed to do this. I had my character pull down on the rope and rolled the dice.
    I got a perfect 20.
    I pulled the other character down so hard into the hole that he ended up hitting his head and fainting. It was a completely pointless development that wasted everyone's time and hurt another member of the party, but for a while, I felt extremely accomplished about that.

    • @megasupergames
      @megasupergames Před 8 lety +29

      +Zetsubou Z. Stuff like that was actually a pretty common occurrence. It would eventually become an inside joke among the group that I only ever succeeded in anything at all when I was actively trying to screw with everyone else, which was with no doubts at least once per game. Fun times.

    • @AlluMan96
      @AlluMan96 Před 8 lety

      +Zetsubou Z.
      That kind of roll-luck is something the party I'm currently with suffers mutually. We tend of roll amazing shit when we fight these little battles against Goblins or random bandits and we also have nice luck with outside-things like rolling perception or history checks, leading to many-a legend like the ranger's Double penetration, my wrestling career and our Cleric's Necrotic touch of 1-hit-death. However, when push comes to shove and we're faced with any dangerous encounter or boss-character, the random number gods suddenly spite our efforts and the whole party collectively chokes up. I have fond memories of my character being unable to even smash a Kerosene bottle on an Owl-bear that was right next to me, while before, I had no issues preforming a Bane back-break on a Hobgoblin that was bigger than I was (Playing a Dwarf, which explains the size-differance).

      It was best to avoid combat whenever possible because monsters gave you very little XP and even the wussiest monster could tpk a first level party with a couple of lucky rolls. You got most of your XP through treasure, so you were supposed to find creative ways to get it without fighting. Being so frail at level one shouldn't have been a big deal if you had the treasure first, combat last mentality encouraged by the game's XP mechanics... you know, the ones that the game didn't bother explaining in the non-DM parts of the rules, so we wound up with generations of murder hobos and character funnels because the only obvious path for progression was combat?

    • @Doc_Fun
      @Doc_Fun Před 7 lety +8

    I'm only 15, for the past few years dungeons and dragons has been floating around me.But this summer me and my friends decided to delve into this complicated world. We've only had two sessions so far, we've had a bit of trouble with the rules but still had a great time. One of the problems may be that there is only three of us playing (including this Dungeon master).
    Probably one of the funniest things which has happened to us so far is when our fighter, who goes by the name of Ayato, was shot by a Goblin. He attempted to dodge but the arrow just hit him and cut off his left nipple, now filled with rage, Ayato takes revenge by cutting off the nipples of all goblins he comes across.

    One thing that somewhat bothers me on the criticism of the old DnD rules, is how early characters, unless their classes are specifically geared for combat, are worthless in said combat.
    I think most people miss the point that DnD isn't a Fighting Table Top game. It's literally ANYTHING: The Table Top Game. And I remember how the early quests for Lvl 1 characters that I usually went through were more about exploration and the unveiling of a possible overarching plot throughout the campaign.
    Likely because of complaints like that is why we got 4th Edition. Which is more like a table top WoW.

      Advanced Dungeons and Dragons was never a Solo game either. You need a well rounded group that plays off of each others strengths and weaknesses. The game could be run solo, but really required some fudging of the rules to make it even remotely enjoyable for the player.

      +Havoc Jaeger I like your reasoning, that is why i always gave more experience to players willing to explore and "EXPERIENCE" the world around them, whether it be from conversation to simple going on a walk through the town or neighboring towns around. I have always had this issue within my groups growing up, they just focused so much on fighting that we would ramp up to the point where it became basically god of war and nothing on the earthly realm could kill us. I dont like getting crap rolls but at least it then made me have to play differently and possibly be more creative than all the others.

    • @HSnake5
      @HSnake5 Před 8 lety +2

      Pretty much that. The moment you make combat the core of the experience, you are automically losing at lot of what the game has to offer you. When combat becomes the norm , to me, it loses all the fun and tension of it.
      It's completely different mentality of what most people have when going into roleplaying games in general, tabletop or even electronic. And to me, that is frustrating as hell.

    That is by far my favorite d&d. Classic D&D granted far more XP from treasure than killing. TSR never called called it basic, that became commonly used because a lot of people moved from the D&D Basic set (the red box) to Advanced D&D instead of getting the D&D Expert set. As you said the Rules Cyclopedia put all the rules from Basic, Expert and Companion set together with most of the stuff from Masters. It does not include rules from the Immortals set and is still further extended on by Gazetteers.

    it took so long for D&D characters to level up in older editions that I suspect a lot of DMs cheated and gave out more XP than the rules steictly allowed. By the book it could take you months or years just to get to level 2, and later levels took even longer!

    • @adzi6164
      @adzi6164 Před 5 lety +1

      One thing mentioned later is that in those older editions you also got XP for treasure, 1 XP per 1 gold piece of value.
      This gave *much* more XP than fighting, either fixed enemy groups or random encounters.
      So even without cheating, smart players would get their 2nd levels in only a few sessions, if not in a single one.

    1: Ventriloquism isn't useless, it's good for misdirection and distraction.
    2: Control temperature is good for when your in deserts, icy lands or in an ice cold cave and your party is starting to be severely affected.
    3: Speak with plants may seem useless and probably largely is but it's mainly good for getting through an area thickly populated by plants and would otherwise be impossible, very difficult or too slow to get through BUT it can also be used to block enemies.
    4: Growth of Animal is primarily to make your pack mules/horses to carry more shit. I wish I had this in Skyrim.

      Spells in classic d&d weren't balanced like a video game, gygax and the gang tried to imagine interesting magic that you would see if you were really in a sword and sorcery pulp adventure. The terms "Buff" and "Debuff" didn't exist so when you would get +1 to attack rolls from your cleric, you imagine holy magic flowing through you instead of video game partical effects.

    Speak with plants may be a little pointless but speak with animals is awesome! (at least in edition 5). I am currently a Hobbit outlander ranger who is good/chaotic (but i interpreted chaotic diffrently from how it is described in the handbook because my dungeonmaster allowed it) and i got a giant weasle as companion since im level 3. Lately we were in a city where we had to await our trial for being suspects in a murder case and our weapons were taken from us. So i decided to play a game of dice in a tavern (which is awesome because i just played dice against my dungeonmaster) and i won about 30 gold and a horn-dagger, managed to outdrink 2 dwarfs, proceeded to drink with my giant weasle until he was drunk too then i used "speak with animals", went to my room with my giant weasle and we had some deep-drunken talk about life and about how we are like brothers even though we are from diffrent species. By the way i called my weasle "Brom" because he told me that he loves blackberries which are called "Brombeeren" in german.

      It's a lot of fun if the DM is good and the group has chemistry. Both are preferred, but you aren't always blessed with both, sadly. A game I play only has 2 of us out of 5 who have chemistry, and two are little better than potted house plants; they don't do a lot and don't try to collaborate or offer much, while the last is fairly new to the group and is still trying to find his footing. It can be very frustrating even with just basic RP moments, because two of them will just sit there, shrug and not offer anything or attempt to get involved. It sucks having to carry a game like that on the shoulders of only two people.

    • @talldorf6445

      If you haven't already tried to, either look for adventure league games, or roll 20.
      Adventure League is "organized play" by wizards of the coast, you run the official adventures or some of the one shots they produce from time to time. The nice thing is you can a character and take it anywhere it's played. Bad news is that you have to follow their rules (which aren't bad, but they limit you to the players handbook and one of the suplimental books, so no far traveler goliath barbarian with path of the zealot.)
      But depending on the dm, it can be a load of fun.
      Roll 20 is usually a last restort, because playing in a random game can be either the best or the worst experience ever.
      Give it a shot, it's super fun.

    I always wanted to get into D&D. I love fantasy settings and I am, in fact, trying to write a book in a fantasy setting.
    But I doubt people playing D&D would enjoy having me around. I'm not good at math, not even at a very simple level, because I just don't care for numbers and I always trip over them. I also trip over my words, so I couldn't be a dungeon master. My luck is also notoriously bad, so having me around would probably lead to the whole party dying because my characters stabs them in the throat with a pillow.
    I'm also weird around people, especially Germans, which is problematic, because I am a German living in Germany.

    I think all three of these "useless" spells sound quite awesome and almost OP. Talking to plants would have incredible utility for information gathering and other stuff. Doubling an animal's size could give you a horse sized dog or an elephant sized horse. And controlling the temperature by roughly 10°C up and down could be enough to freeze or melt water/ice which, while situational, could be useful. Also I like the THAC0 system and think it's unfairly infamous, it's not that complicated.

      +Devon Rose I played that game so much as a kid. I think about it often as an adult studying ancient Mediterranean and European history and I'm not even a little ashamed to admit that. Especially when I hear the word "trireme".

      Balancing things must have been tough as shit back then. Can't just twiddle things and import fresh values from an excel sheet, can't simulate anything without hiring a statistician, and you gotta go hand edit 19 different pages every time you change one number. After a certain point they'll just say 'fuck it, good enough'. Was any system from that era really balanced?

    I first watched this video when I first started playing d&d and got none of the jokes, it’s been 7 years and I now understand them. Thank you, this video came when I needed it the most.

    I just can't see myself getting into D&D. It's not that I don't find the idea of RPGs very fun, but more for the fact that the rules are just a little intimidating. So much math, so many rules to even just attacking something. But hey, the stories that occur from some people's games can be pretty awesome and hilarious, like that one at the beginning with the guy burning the whole party.

      +OckhamAsylum Attacking person.
      1. Roll a d20
      2. Add bonuses or penalties
      3. See if your attack was good enough to harm him.
      4. Determine if you critically hit him.
      5. If you hurt him, roll the dice to see how good the hit was.
      6. Add bonuses to damage.
      Done.
      Even easier in practice.

      Red Dragon I think it would take a couple tries before I got it without needing help. And a few more after that before I got it without everyone getting annoyed at me for taking so long

      +OckhamAsylum This is an old-ass edition of D&D. The newer versions are a million times more simple.

    Oh man. I'm hearing a lot of music from Towers of Doom and Shadows over Mystara (and that Kobold bark was definitely from ToD). I spent all my quarters on those game back in the day. Also... the way you said "stick to snakes" was exactly how the cleric (Greldon) does. That's no coincidence! I'm calling it here. You did a Greldon impression!!!!!!
