- Annual camping trip to San Clemente State. I do this every October to camp, surf, relax, and think of nothing. This year was a little small but it was better than most years since I brought my bike which I haven't done in over 3 years.
I don't have much surf footage. My Soloshot wouldn't properly sync. it kept putting me out of frame.
That one luxurious camping set up nice! Quality surfing too 🤙
3:20 words to live by! Couldn't agree with you more (Santa Cruz Co. for me, but applies across the Globe). Always getting Lured to the outside and it rarely pays off. Instead the cold and frustration set in.
Awesome vlog! 🤙
Looked like a good trip overall!
you guys should have stopped by although it was probably the only time that Bolsa/HB was better than south. haha Lowers was better but from what I saw on the cams, bolsa was better than all of the south on that Monday and Tuesday. :( we almost drove up. haha
Looks like a fun trip! I went to Trestles the first time last month, we surfed at Middles, it was okay, but very lully. Next time defiantly need a bike. Looks like you guys have it down. My buds and I were supposed to go camping in a few weeks at San Onofre, but looks like that's not going to happen :(.
bummer. I'm heading back down in April over spring break. Hopefully they don't close the state parks. Are you guys not going because of closure?
@@ThomyeSurfs Yes, my buddy told me they cancelled and refunded their payment. I was looking forward to surfing at Trails. Hope things will get better and we will be able to camp there early next year. Liking your videos! Keep it up! I'm about the same size as you, 5'7 and 143lbs, but you're obviously a better surfer. Haha!
Camping in style! I need to adopt your high wave count strategy, instead of waiting interminably for a set wave. makes a lot of sense! :)
I used to use a tracking device for wave stats. For some reason, I can't remember what it's called. It looked like a small hockey puck. Lately, I've been using my apple watch and the surfline app. although it's not as good as the hockey puck, it gives me a idea. The apple watch will count waves that I almost catch but don't drop in on. Sometimes I go out with a number of waves that I have to catch. It forces me to stay active. It backfires on occasion. I find that when I hunt the lineup too much, I will paddle to all the flat spots and the best waves end up where I was sitting 5 minutes ago. It's funny how somedays, you are always in the right spot and other days, always in the wrong spot.
@@ThomyeSurfs I've seen these tracks, amazing! One guy, on my FB surfed a wave at Snapper Rocks for 450M, measured by one of these GPS trackers! So true, one day nothing but gold, the next can't buy a wave! I use landmarks to ensure that I sit in precisely the wrong spot... :)
@@nottherealmccoy4955 LOL. that was last part was funny.
@@ThomyeSurfs Gotta have a sense of humour when you surf as badly as I do! ;0
One quick thing, in case I gave the wrong impression. During the week it is definitely more crowded than it used to be but I noticed that Uppers was less crowded than Lowers and Church after the morning shift. I managed to get a couple of really fun sessions with me and a few other guys out at Taints (between Cottons and Uppers). They weren't epic days but they were on the spectrum of good. Uppers right had bout 20 guys on it. Taint's had maybe 5, the north end of taints which is straight out in front of the trestles bridge was about another 20 guys and cottons had about 15. Anyways, I think between Cottons, Taints, Uppers, Lowers, Church, San O (point, oldmans, dog patch), Trails 1 thru 6, there are plenty of uncrowded places to surf during the week and during the day.
Nice video! I think I’ve seen you out at Uppers a few times. I’m sure you get way better waves in October than December. Trestles/San Clemente kind of turns off during the winter. It really wants a south swell.
Curious where you got the name “Taints”? Been surfing there for about 40 years and every one I know calls it Barbwires. The locals have 2 other names for the peaks between Uppers and Cotton’s. So it would be Uppers, Fin Box’s, Cheese Graters, Barbwires and then Cottons. Maybe I’ll see you out there one of these days!
@@dustystarr2297 my buddy and I started calling it taints some years ago, taint uppers, taint cottons. so we called it taints. Thought we had made that up but then heard a few other guys call it that. Then we just assumed that's what it was called. Never heard of the other names before. Anyways, maybe I'll see you out there. if you see me, say hello. I know I'm camping again in April for a week. fingers crossed that they don't close the park. That would suck. Although, I surfed San O the point during the lockdown. It was nice getting waves there with only 20 other guy spread out.
Lol I love it, totally makes sense! Maybe you mentioned it but do you camp at San Clemente or San Meteo campground? I love camping down there too even though i’m only 20min away. I find it harder to get a spot at San Clemente so I’ll usually camp San Meteo.
@@dustystarr2297 usually San Clemente although I like both. I choose San Clemente because of the option to surf state. Sometimes, rarely, that place goes off.
Yeah, booking sucks. it is getting harder every year because people are figuring it out. There is a trick to it.
how do you decide what wetsuit to bring? i always bring my 3/2 steamer but never know when to wear the short arm long leg suit. or just a jacket. went last weekend and was a little warm in the steamer. so shouldve brought the short arm. but a month before it was supposed to be the same temp and it was cold cuz my feet kep getting cold.
I usually bring several wetsuits. If the sun is out, I like to be colder than warmer. If it is could outside, I like to be hotter. I'm a huge wuss for cold water, I tend to wear 3/2 full no matter what and bring a 4/3 for backup. I wear a spring maybe 2 weeks out of the year. it has to be warm.
Thanks for sharing, we about to head to the same campsite for the 1st time. Any breaks within walking distance for beginners?
although the closest beach is just a walk down the trial, San Clemente State beach, I would not call that a beginner beach. it is dumpy. I have seen it on occasion be mellow enough for beginners but not ideal. Best beginner beaches which are a very short drive or long walk away. the are San O, surfing the inside only. The waves there tend to reform. Also, many options at Trails further south. Uppers trestles isn't bad either but all rock bottom, but if you have booties, the waves are mellow in my opinion. I personally like the experience of camping there and biking to the different spots. Just makes for an adventure.
@@ThomyeSurfs Thanks for your input, our families have 3 boys are just starting. Sounds like we should head toward Trails or brave the parking line at Old Man's. It's been a decade since I paddled out at San O. Looking forward to it.
Great vod! How do you get the Surfline camera to sort of follow you like that? Is it video editing? If it is, what technique is it called?
Yes it is editing. The tool I use zooms and I can set a track for it to follow. Not sure what is called. What sucks is that when I want it zoomed and stationary, I can't. Haha
@@ThomyeSurfs that's unfortunate haha, I use Davinci Resolve and from my usage of it I only figured out how to do the stationary zoom so far 😅, thanks for the reply!
9:36 Mega flea infestation ! I don't know how you do it? Meds? !
haha. I paddle to the least crowded spot. waves aren't as good but I have more fun.
Do you feel pretty safe at the camp site?
Absolutely. When I was there this past october, there were tons of families with little kids. I think because of distance learning they were there all throughout the week as well as the weekend.
Work setup ... Very interesting. What kind of download and upload speed to you get at the campsite?
Erhan, what is up brother. Haven't surfed with you in so long. You need to come camping next year. Or I guess it would be this year. I don't know about the actual speeds but I have not had any problems working remotely while on vacation for emergencies.
BTW, did you randomly come across this channel or did you someone tell you about it.
@@ThomyeSurfs It was random. I think I was looking for camp/rv sites near surf spots.
@@erhanoktay1382 that's funny. Something told me you were back in Austin is that true?
Can you give detail about the campsite?
Sure. There are actually 3 campsites within bike ride distance from Trestles.
1) San Clemente State Beach - 225 Avenida Calafia, San Clemente, CA 92672
2) San Mateo - 830 Cristianitos Rd, San Clemente, CA 92672
3) San Onofre - 5200 S Pacific Coast Hwy, San Clemente, CA 92672
They all have their advantages and disadvantages. Since they are all part of the state park system, you make reservations on reservecalifornia.com. It is not an easy process since you have to do it 6 months out in advance. But if you have ever bought concert tickets, you will figure it out.
As for advantages and disadvantages:
San Clemente
Advantages include: in town, places to eat and stores very close. state beach is literally a minute walking distance away, and bike ride to Uppers, Lowers, Church.
Disadvantages include: limited surf at state beach but you mostly surf Trestles so not a big deal. You can also hear the highway.
San Mateo
Advantages include: still close to town, bike ride to Uppers, Lowers, Church, and quiet.
Disadvantages include: no beach within walking distance.
San Onofre
Advantages include: beach within walking distance (San Onofre Trails)
Disadvantages include: far from other break, but still doable just not convenient, far from town, and not very quiet. There is a train that rolls right by the campgrounds and the highway is pretty close.
My opinion, I like San Clemente the best. I like having the beach really close, being able to ride my bike to Trestles, and, once in a while, we like going to Pedro's Tacos for lunch on our bikes. We also can ride to the store. Nowadays, if you have an electric bike, even easier.
Thomye Surfs thanksso much man.. more camping years to come.
