Huge shout out to my good friend Geoff who was kind enough to not only sell me his Firewire Great White Twin but also lend me his CI Dumpster Diver 2. Without him, my reviews would likely have only half the diversity it does.
Quick note about the Dumpster Diver 2, from the dimensions off their website, I find this 2nd version to be very similar to the original in regards to volume to length. They stated they wanted to make it longer than the older version and this is only true if you compare them by width. However, by going with longer, you end up with a slightly narrower board and fraction less volume.
I never got to ride the original so I can't compare the two but I found this board to be a decent groveler but more importantly, and excellent performance board for an average surfer like myself in average conditions. Definitely in the category of a daily driver for me.
The rail to rail transition felt effortless maybe even a bit twitchy. It was something I had to get used to. It really reminded me of the old Firewire Dominator and Firewire Spitfire. It caught waves easily and provided the wave had a little steepness, the board went fast. On the softer waves, as long as you kept it on rail, it maintained speed very well. I don't often ride PU boards but found this one to be lively and responsive. Thumbs up for the DD2.

It's still a performance board. It has a hip squash to help pivot off the bottom. Compared to a good wave shortboard, the tail is actually pretty wide. The overall board is meant to be wider with a rounder outline. These are adjustments from the normal shortboard for not "good waves" but for your daily SoCal stuff. So, compared to your performance shortboard it's shorter, wider, with more volume, has rounder profile outline, and has a bigger block tail. It compares to other shapers: Pyzel Red Tiger, Lost Sub Driver. These are variations with slightly different characteristics meant to take a performance shortboard into sub-par conditions. For twin plus trailer, there are other boards that complement that setup that Thomye has reviewed. More fishy or midlenth boards have the tail width for that setup. They're wider, with flatter rockers, are more buoyant, and tend to plane more, so the big twin/trailer works, whereas this is more performance-less planning, more driving off a sunken tail with a thruster setup. It's a good board for sure and Thomye makes it look good, but in deciding - on a spectrum, this is more performance shortboard and less fishy twin/trailer.
Beautifull board, please try to make another video with good waves. For the waves you caught, probably the best board should be in the spine teck construction.
I had two original dumpster divers, 10 years ago, what a great board it was. There was no epoxy back then.

I have one of these and this review nails it. Really good when the wave has curve but gets slippy on flat faces.

nice. Yeah, I've done quite a few of the Sunday since I have 3 of them, LOL. 5'6, 6', 6'8. The fin options is what intrigued me so I put out as many videos as I could. I haven't done one of the 5'6 though. I may before I get rid of it. For me, it's fun but when I get into that length, I would rather be on a conventional board for performance. but the 6' and 6'8 are in my quiver forever. :)

Btw I sprained both my knees at the same time on a close out because I didn’t have enough wax on the board. Learned it the hard way
ouch. that sucks. Sprains are the worst cuz you can't surf. I had a knot on my head but was able to surf the next day. I should have rewaxed or combed it. :)

I saw your last video where you were trying surf over the foam. You literally did the exact movement needed to do a 360 but didn't commit that upper body. You would have had it. bro.

I have one and initially used AM2 fins. It felts sticky compared to my Happy Everyday. I bought the DD2 fins and it's perfect for it. Board started to feel loose but still holds and goes fast. You should try it with the DD2 fins.

How do you find the DD2 compared to the Happy Everyday ?
@@damienphelan666 unfortunately I have not tried the HapEv, so I can't directly compare them. When I look at the stock dims and compare them by size, the HapEv seems to be narrower/thinner/less volume (by the slightest of bits). however, it seems like the HapEv has a slightly wider tail. A comparison would be interesting for sure.
If you compared them my volume, then the HapEv would be a tad taller so then you would have more board to push around. Again, really difficult to say without surfing them back to back. Maybe on the next demo day.
@@damienphelan666 The DD2 has a flat deck and less rocker. Single concave (dd2) vs single to double (happy everyday). With that DD2 goes faster overall. Happy Everyday is looser(easier to turn) while DD2 felt like you really need to set the rail to get those turns. I think HE and DD2 can handle same wave height but HE will be more reliable on steeper bigger waves while DD2 will be more fun in smaller waves because of the speed it gives. CI mentioned in their reviews that surfing DD2 is like Dane and Happy Everyday is like Taj Burrow. Both works great but different approach. I’m only an intermediate surfer (thomye is way better) so my inputs are on that level.

LOL, forgot it wasn't my board so I had to ditch the board right before it hit sand. It was too close, almost scratched teh bottom.

Yeah I'm not sure. You let me try the PJ Pro once, but I think you were running the Machado pivots. I think that board needs a raked fin or 2 +1. Maybe if you ever bring it out again, you'll have to let me try it. I'm going to work on the GWT next. you should try that one.
Great review! Does this board perform better in smaller surf than the dominator 2? I’m looking at this board the mash up, the dominator 2 and the bobby quad? I surf in NJ and the majority of days in the summer are smaller so I need a great paddler without losing the performance.
Comparing the 4 boards I'll do it in 4 types of conditions: small + soft, small + punchy, medium, and lastly bigger better wave, not huge just bigger around head high plus.
s+s - BQ advantage wider tail and swallow, mashup advantage flatter rocker and swallow, dom2 and DD2 likely interchangeable. Both have similar tails but it will depend on what you compare them by. It will have to be either height or volume. by height, meaning if I surfed them both at 5'7, I would have 1.5 L more on the Dom2 so it would likely paddle better and grovel better. By volume, I'd have to surf the 5'6 for the Dom2. I' like longer boards for this type of shape. If you like the feel of a smaller board without actually going smaller, Dom2 cuz of wide point back makes the board feel smaller than it is. I tested the 5'4 and it was way too short for me. Felt like I was surfing a 5'2.
s+p - Mashup advantage, slightly narrower tail, flatter rocker, shorter for better performance. BQ advantage, flat and shorter, Dom2 cuz you could ride it a tad shorter, might fit pocket better. The dd2 works well but is longer by design if you surf it at your volume.
m - Mashup advantage, fast board with knox fins. It's just my favorite. DD2 cuz of the performance features and outline, Dom2 cuz it is similar to in shape to DD2 but it might have too much volume at 5'7. BQ, wide tail might hinder performance for the average guy.
b - DD2 for the outline, tail, super responsive. Almost twitchy is what i felt. Dom2 for tail and design. Mashup, sort of flat so I found it to get tighter and with swallow, a little tracky in bigger waves. BQ to flat, tail too wide, not the best for bigger better waves.
I put the boards in order of good to not as good in those conditions. Also keep in mind that it is subjective and my perception. It could go different for you. Overall from small to medium waves, Mashup for the win. it was medium to big and good shape, like lowers trestles, DD2 out of these 4. medium to big softer not as good, maybe the dom2. BQ for micrwaves.
One last thing, I have never surfed the dom2 in the 5'6 or 5'7. I only surfed it as a 5'4 and it was way too short. so hard for me to really have an opinion on that so my eval above is just based on theory.

@@ThomyeSurfs wow thank you so much for the info. I really appreciate the detailed response. I have the No Brainer slater designs and I ride it as a quad. I loved the stability and hold in solid head high. But haven’t given it a good go in smaller surf or in a pool yet. That’s another question I had, which board do you think works best pools? I’m gonna go to NY wave pool American Dream Mall and was planning on riding the No Brainer but I’m worried it’s not going to have enough volume and or thickness but not sure. @@scottcuttre9705 I can't really speak to that pool since Waco is the only one I've been to. And since I don't know the No Brainer and/or you and your surfing, I will just say this, for me, of the 4 choices above, I would say the Mashup. Although the wave is small, it is punchy and cupped. At waco, you want a shorter board that has a lot of drive. Although I surfed the FT and not the Mashup, I know or a fact that the Mashup would have worked really well there. I've seen video of the pool in NY and I would pick my mashup for that wave as well. I would do my FT but since that wasn't one of the 4 we stated this conversation with, i'll omit that one. Anyways, BQ's tail might be too wide to a cupped out wave, per the reason I gave already. Although the DD2 and Dom2 would work, they would be longer, might be too much swing weight.
@@ThomyeSurfs thanks again for the great info. I really want to try Waco and the NY pool. The one thing that worried me about the NY pool is that they say to ride a board with more volume. My options right now are limited board wise. I only have the No Brainer, a Stretch fletcher 5 fin, which I haven’t ridden in a long time and a Schroff twin that I ride when it’s small because it’s a thick wide 80s type board but I don’t really want to ride it at the pool. I kinda want to ride the board I can do my best turns on. So with the 4 boards you helped me with, since my funds are limited which board do you think would be the best for NJ surf and for pools? From what you wrote I’m guessing the Mash up? I’m not sure I still love the review of the Bq. Your surfing in that small surf was crazy! Plus with DD2 and the D2 I’m leaning towards the D2. What do you think? And thank you again for your time and insight.
@@scottcuttre9705 Mashup. The issue with the BQ again, might be the wider tail but also, you are only limited to a quad. Not that it is bad but I love quads but nice to have the other options. I think the D2 and DD2 are better ocean boards only cuz you will likely get it longer.
Do you think the DD2 is better than the Bobby quad, for high performance surfing, in very small waves such as in your Bobby quad review video?
I know you found the answer for those the might be reading the comments. if the waves are small and soft, BQ all the way. if they have some curve to them, they are about the same. If the waves get bigger, the DD2 has a much higher ceiling than the BQ.

I haven't reached out yet. I don't feel my production level and videos are up to snuff. LOL he might elevate me a bit but I might drag him down so I thought to wait a while. I did get my Dominator 2 from him directly and regarding the white tiger, just coincidence that the guy who loaned it to me bought several boards from Noel.
Anyways, This year is looking really good for boards unlike last year. Last year was rough. Definitely though, my ultimate goal is to review boards as they are released. I feel like I'm about 6 months to a year behind on board. And with filler boards, I'm about a year to 2 behind. But I feel they are still useful.
I really wanted to review the HI Moe mini but none available for me to look at. :( Hoping to squeeze in the Boss up.
in early July though, the CI demo comes back. Last year I did the Bobby Quad, this year, in my usual late fashion, I hope to do the G-Skate and/or the M23.

You definitely get more views with just released boards. Fillers are fine, especially with some timeless boards, it’s always useful.

Awesome review Thomye. How would you compare this to the NB2?
If I remember correctly the NB2 was actually faster. That slip I mentioned in the DD2 review doesn't happen. However the NB2 had a different type of slip. On my backside bottom turn when I had a lot of speed The corner of the tail would lift the rear fin out of the water and I would lose traction. But that board was fast but both boards need somewhat of a better wave or steeper wave because of their rockers and I think the NB2 had a little bit more rocker but I don't remember since it was so long ago.

that's a loaded question. haha let me ask you a question, what is your weight, height, and normal board in terms of volume. And, what specific board are you riding at the moment? Lastly, what do your waves look like? Are they soft like mine?
Thank you for getting back to me! I’m 6’, 182 and the waves I surf are very similar to the ones in your video. I’ve been surfing mostly alternative shapes like a Vulcan tachyon 32.5L or Gary McNeil rtt 31L but my last ghost 4 years ago was roughly 30L.
@@hugohugo911 dang, you ride your boards small. The DD2 i rode was 27.8 and at my weight, that is a factor of .191724. If I took that and used your weight, that should put you on 34.89L. I guess technically, I'm riding mine too big. haha
Going the other way, using your weight and volume ratio, I should be on a 24.7L board which is right but for me the issue is length of board. the 5'7 is the right size, the 27.8L is more liters than i should be surfing. It keeps me a tad out of the water.
At any rate, answering your question. from the looks of it, you seem to be very fit and paddle well. If you aren't struggling there, I would say that you should go on the lower end but at your height, I think you should factor in the rail line. This type of shape, a normal daily driver / performance shape, I would consider more than the volume. For me, I like my to have the board close to my height or taller. Taller if the board narrow. This one is grovel wide so 5'7 made the most sense for me.

Volume wise i reckon I’m a bit on the low side but the tachyon 5’3 and rtt are super special in their planing shape that they still paddle great and grovel amazing.
Out of a small wave performance shortboard I don’t want it overly short, so I think I’ll go 5’10.

Another great review! You mentioned that using a 2+1 requires more foot movement. I was wondering if you could elaborate on that. BTW subscribed to your other channel. Hit me up if you ever make it to Hawaii!
with a 2+1, your front fins are obviously the bigger fins, they are usually twins. That will give you drive and hold but only if you surf over them. So, when pumping down teh line to get speed, it helps to be over the front fins. In the video at, 3:14 and 3:57 you will see me standing at the front tip of the traction pad. Right over the front fins. This is why the board is driving so well. Before that, I was standing too far back thinking it was like my Sharpeye FT which as a quad and swallow, you don't need to shuffle as much.
Having said that, the reason so many people recently love 2+1's is that if you are standing just behind the front fins, as most people do, it really makes the board feel loose especially at slower speeds. The bigger front fins act like a pivot point. Most people like that, I personally don't like that unless i'm turning or doing a maneuver.
Check out the wave at 2:17, you will see me at the middle of the pad which is just behind the front fins. you will see that the board swivels. Some people like that so it all depends on your preference.
Anyways, that is basically what I meant. when surfing a 2+1, you have to drive with your back feet over the front fins and then shift back to do maneuvers. Thrusters are similar but not as drastic and quads for me, I can keep my feet planted in between the fins the entire time. I don't seem to have to adjust as much.
Regarding Hawaii, for sure. My daughter's are both at college next year so without kids at home, I'm going to take advantage of those spring time $200 round trips to Hawaii as often as possible.:) Where do you surf out there?

So I live on the east side of Oahu and Diamond Head is of the most consistent breaks and close to me so I probably surf there the most. We also surf this one spot which is a really far paddle, but my buddy has a key for a private dock, which makes the paddle way shorter. That place can get really good. Depending on swell direction, we also surf at Ala Moana.
Wintertime, I try to get up to the North Shore when I can. My favorite spot is probably Laniakea and Mokuleia Beach Park.
@@jasonk7860 that's pretty cool to have that dock. Definitely hit you up if I head over. My buddy from high school lives on the west side but I've never surfed there. I've only surfed the bowl mostly and rock piles. I have to say, waves in HI are so different. It was tiny and I caught a 1' wave at Rock Piles on a board that was way too small for me. I got like 6 really good back side turns. Not sure how a 1' wave (California size - knee high), was able to push me like that.
Definitely next year, when flights go cheap, I am going here as often as possible. Going to leave like 2 boards in HI too. Hit me up on email.
Would the board brands/shops be willing to loan you boards to test? They have those traveling demo board vans and I’ve definitely made purchase decisions based on your reviews
I have been lucky a few times with firewire demo days. but the last two demo days, the waves sucked and so did the weather. It rained I think. CI does a travel demo which is awesome. I did the bobby quad review on a demo board. And they let me go 4 days on it so that helped me with getting enough board time to do a proper review. At lot of other shapers don't have demo fleets. :(
I've reached out to a bunch of local shapers some time a go and a lot of them either ignored me or they told me to buy which I can't really afford to. Resale is super important for me at the moment. I need to be able to get rid of the board if I buy it. Although the most recent ones I've purchased, I have loved so much they are still in my quiver. I have a couple of really good friends that want to loan me their boards but unfortunately, they ride their board bigger.
I know you didn't like the NB3. How does the DD2 feel different as a performance groveler?
much better as a groveler. The NB3 went well for me in the bigger waves. the DD2 just needed steepness and not so much size. if it had a vertical face, it went well. On the softer stuff, you just had to be on rail.

You rip Thomye no doubt. However, do you think the board looked a little bit over sensitive/twitchy in the footage. I always thought you look very smooth and there’s a lot of flow but this board kinda looked abit less flowy
yea, in the beginning for sure and it had to do with the tail and fins setup. I said it was easy rail to rail which is code for super sensitive. Once I got the footing down, it was better but still the fin setup made it super twitchy. I will get it out once as a thruster and let everyone know how that goes.

Cats?! Oh hell no. I’m a dog person all the way lol! It looks like this is a thruster setup not intended for twin plus? Thruster setups have the side fins further up. 🤙🏼
@@allsurf LOL, I am too, a dog person that is. But because of my work schedule, I cannot get a dog. It would be unfair to the dog. :( Although the perfect time to have gotten one was that first year of covid, I was home every day. If only I had known.
And as for the thruster, yes, I agree. The DD2 is designed to be a thruster for sure but the Mashup was as well and that one went better as a 2+1. It could be the swallow though. That extra hold and tracking maybe makes up for the smaller back fin.
I'll also measure them when I get the chance. I think for me at least, cuz of my front footed preference, 2+1s work better usually unless it is a rounded pin or squash, at least that is what i'm starting to figure out. The surf has been so bad that I didn't get too many opportunities in different fin setup. I'm hoping I do get to surf it as a thruster though before I have to give the board back. :) Wish me luck. @ThomyeSurfs I was going to say about the front footed thing, totally agree. I'm very back footed thus without the trailer it slides a lot and swallows work well because the extra traction points. Also, I am glad you didn't get a dog as you would have to quit your job to take proper care of it. However, if you get to 5 cats I may have to pretend I don't know you.😅
I put my bottom teeth through my lower lip one day in a similar fashion. It was 9/11 and I was getting stitches watching the WTC disaster
ouch, I haven't put my teeth through but I have had a board go all the way through. :( injuries suck.
