In the description of the last video • Cut Sample + Break = Beat , I briefly mentioned listening to drum loops from records of the 80s and 90s. Today, let's talk about how to listen, what to listen for. Of course, this is my approach, and if you have better methods, feel free to add them.
Firstly, I listen while trying to identify the fundamental frequency of the kick drum and where the snare and hi-hat sit in terms of frequency. I think about the key of the sample in the song, the frequency range of the bass, and the key of the kick and snare, and whether they match the key of the sample.
Then, I pay attention to timing. I will try to understand the swing in the beat, and thinking about how the producer blended the drum timing with the sample. Finally, I focus on the drum pattern and the sound of the drum kit.
After listening to many songs, I can quickly understand why the drums work in a particular song and seamlessly transition these insights into my own beat-making process.
I believe growth requires patience. Beat making is a form of creation, and there are no one-size-fits-all answers in creativity. The fastest shortcut is to slow down, be patient, and listen. Listening is the best way to learn music production.
