  • Francis Fukuyama is the Olivier Nomellini Senior Fellow at Stanford University’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. He has written on democratization and international political economy, most popularly ‘The End of History and the Last Man’ and ‘Identity’. In our conversation with Francis Fukuyama at #MSC2020, he explains how he now contemplates the end of history and why the search for recognition is central to the crisis of the West.

Scale is the key here. Dignity and respect can be restored to the losers of the globalization experiment once local economies can be restored and people feel that they play a vital role in their communities. Plus it would help temper the climate crisis.

I grew up in a working class estate at the height of the troubles in Northern Ireland 40 years ago, we had immigrants living in our street, African's, Dutch, Italian, even different genders we all got on great, we always had respect for our neighbors as we all struggled together, we all knew now difficult life was, even the Catholic and Protestant working class got along, it's the morally superior politicians, and religious leaders with their " onward Christian soldier" attitude, the liberals missed the mark, we always had respect for our fellow human, we didn't need it rammed down our throats. That's why the liberals hate Trump he sees that the working class have been left behind, even the Hispanics are voting for Trump, as we the working class know what struggle is and respect others who struggle the same.

You know, it was often said that Barak Obama was an empty vessel into which people poured their hopes and dreams. I sort of agree with this statement. But what's so odd is that Trump is this idea times 100. He is an utterly incompetent, narcissistic idiot that people pour not only their hope and dreams, but their moral philosophy, their sense of self worth, their hatreds, their lust, and every other part of their vague understanding of human condition into. Trump doesn't see anything. He is a self-indulgent son of a millionaire song-and-dance man, a painfully incompetent administrator in nearly every way, and a fictional creation of what Hollywood thinks a good businessman is. And yet, here we are. Now you are asserting that he is somehow a visionary who see's the profundity of class struggle and our shared common humanity.
Bro, hitch your wagon to someone else. Hitch your wagon to someone who is displays some modicum of competence and who actually displays some kind of understanding of what it is you think you want, rather than what you seem to be projecting onto the man.

We were all poor living hand to mouth, and the point everyone misses that we had dignity and respect for everybody's way of life. We also knew "respect is earned" not to be given away because of the colour of our skin. What your stating is that they felt disrespected, no but they/we had dignity, and we all respected that.

All neo-liberals who criticise marxism don't understand it or intentionally misrepresent it. Either way, they don't criticise it on the terms on which it is based. Fukuyama is no different. His idea of history is fundamentally different to the Marxist view of history and view of society. Marxist understanding of history is called historical materialism, and analyses events in history based on their material context, I.e. on the economic mode of production and exchange. This is a scientific view of history. Fukuyama on the other hand views history empirically I.e. he sees it as the world exists for him today. His view of the future then, is an idealist one, which evokes Hegel, who was himself an idealist, whose philosophy inspired Marx, but who Marx superseded (when he wrote The German Ideology). This is why Fukuyama is so wrong. He's an idealist, and not just that, but a bourgeois one, who bases his view of the future and of human evolution on his own class position.

Fukuyama is wrong in not "putting on the table" everything that the Mueller Report stands for, and is wrong not to mention the violence/destruction of the left through the streetsAND UNIVERSITIES (!!!) of the country, 5:31: Oh my God... everything is wrong .. I thought Fukuyama was going to denounce the American, South American and European left for appropriating classic liberal flags and turning them into odious divisionism through "identities"... but Fukuyama doesn't even come close to that understanding. Unfortunately, he keeps saying that Trump is a setback to democracy... Regrettable. Divisionism, polarization and lying historical revisionism are products of the academic left that has become one-dimensional throughout American and South American teaching.

He ignores the actual attacks on the founding and restricting institutions while unable to articulate any actual specific Trump overreach.
