4K CABVIEW: Plow season is on with snow drifts on the mountain pass!

  • Finally the plow season is on with snow drifts on the mountain pass! For each year there is less snow on the mountain pass and therefore there is less chance of videos like "Extreme winter conditions on the mountain pass" ( • CABVIEW: EXTREME winte... ), but this year it looks like we're getting there! Finally!
We're going from sea level in Bergen over the mountain pass through Finse at 1222m above sea level. The highest point of the Bergen Line is in the Finse tunnel at 1237m above sea level. You can hear me honk like a monkey there.Finse is also the threshold for two weather systems and it’s usually here you’ll see the stark difference in the weather between western Norway and eastern Norway.I’ve added some photos to this video of the train at Mjølfjell and at Geilo. Mjølfjell and Geilo is considered the beginning and the end of the mountain pass.
And sorry about the whiteouts exiting the tunnels, it seems that the latest update to the camera has slowed it's exposure adjustment.

I wanted to make this video last as long as possible, so I watched it in bits and pieces all day. It seems like everytime you go through a long tunnel, the weather is completely different than when you entered the tunnel. I love all the new things we are getting to see thanks to you. The blue skies…oh they are beautiful. Thank you.

Amazing, to see, the train making its way through harsh winter conditions. Heavy snow drifts, snow, piling up on the tracks; the locomotive wiping it away. It surely demands a lot from you, watching the train making its way through it. I really love to see this. Again, it's amazing to watch this video. Thank you very much . I look forward to more of this kind. 😀😀 Greetings from The Netherlands. PS: The white-outs?? I take them for granted. The scenery makes a whole lot. 😉 And after the snow drifts, there is sunshine. How the weather can change. By the way, my brother is also a train driver for a private company in The Netherlands, driving passenger trains.

In the 1970s when I was living in Bergen some friends and I took a ski tur trip. We took this train to Finse, see at about 2:53 in this video. It was a day very much like the one shown here. We hung out at the sommarhotel for a couple of hours with no let up in the storm. Having no money we went out, strapped our skis on and left following the line of poles stuck in the snow, visibility less than 10 meters. Got "lost" between 2 poles and were out in the trackless Hardangervidda without any reference point. Finally stumbled across a large boulder and put our tent up in its lee. It mostly stayed up after we built two large snow walls sheltering it somewhat. Quite the adventure!

Stunning. Beautiful. Superbly done - a poetic and wonderous trip through an exquisite part of Norway - a place with many exquisite parts. While I love the mountains where I grew up in the American Pacific Northwest (Olympics and Cascades), the vicarious travels via your videos leave me enchanted in a singularly unique way. Seeing a mountain emerge from the mists (left side of the frame at about 2:57, followed shortly by a sunlit mountain in the distance) is sublime. I spoke with one of my colleagues about your videos and mentioned that I'd like to go to a place in the Norwegian mountains to work on current writing projects (Flåm would be nice - albeit probably wishful thinking). He is supportive, claiming (falsely, I believe) that he's been trying to get me out of town for some time. In any event, thank you for the lovely gifts. Press on.

thank you for the beautiful shot of your locomotive and the substation that drops the three phase high voltage supply down to single phase high voltage for the over head cat supply for your train. it is very cool how the rail road just did what it does best, drill and blast two big tunnels right in to the rock to make a large protected space for the step down transformers and oil circuit breakers . i guess your rail road has a power director to monitor and control the sub stations remotely like our rail road has.

Without a doubt, the Bergen Line is one of the most beautiful and spectacular railway line in the world. But there is another - and in my opinion - very unterrated line in Norway. The "Sørlandet Line to Kristiansand and Stavanger. And you mentioned in another comment, that maybe one day you will visit Telemark. I guess as a train driver? 😉 And that gives me hope, you can bring us this part of Norway to youtube too. Of course, that would just be a great bonus because your channel is also the best without it. 🙂

Wow. I love all the mountain railway infrastructure! All the tunnels make the journey feel quite exciting and a testimony to just how vulnerable the track can be in the mountain conditions and weather. It makes me quite nervous seeing the train plough through snow and thus the view out of the cab being just white. I guess the plough does its job and the weight of the train on the tracks ensures its stays on course. Question: If a train wheel runs over snow, does that snow turn to ice or simply melt away due to friction or some other phenomenon associated with the extreme pressure?

So enjoyed this ride. Yes, saw the entire film; but it did take me two days. It was very nice to see the same route, though in reverse and in the daylight as compared to the other ride that was at night. Now I have to pick out anther ride to watch. *grins* This is much better to see from the front rather than the other videos I have seen with the passenger POV.

    • @RailCowGirl
      @RailCowGirl  Před 2 lety +8

      Not random at all:
= General warning of apporaching train
= leve crossing (without full gates, lights and sound)
      = Halt
= Halt and level crossing at the same place

@@wannabetrucker7475 If you watch for the level crossing sign she lists above, then around 15 to 20 seconds later you can often see the crossing. Many of them are lanes between two fields and can be hard to see in the snow, though in a few cases in this video you can spot footprints in the snow going across the tracks.

Compared to other trains and situations, I believe it is a heads-up for automatic brake control being activated, but that's not even a qualified guess. And what that should have in common with Apres-ski in Austria is anyones guess.

its beautiful to obsaerve how the over head electrical line goes zig zag when in a tunnel. it does everywhere but herei it is really visible. oh for those who donbt know its so that the graphite connectors in the pantograph gets uniformly connected and does not get worn down in one line.
