    Great video Sam (as always)! I've had my Trek Rail 7 for just over a week now. I've been out riding everyday since and I'm loving this bike. It has the all-mountain quickness of my Jamis Dakar, which was my favorite bike for years. Great all around feel and this thing climbs like a beast! I had a hard time finding a Trek Rail in a small frame. After 2 months of searching I found one (the only one they had left) at a bike shop in Las Vegas, NV. Picked it up the same day. I've ordered a 27.5 inch wheel for the back to get a little more standover and a little more agility. Like everything to do with MTB's and EMTB's, the Bontrager wheel won't be in for a month but I'm really looking forward to riding the mullet setup. Thanks again for the recommendation.

    I purchased a 9.7 at the beginning of the year and after upgrading the front suspension with a Charger 2.1 damper and swapping out the stock tires for Maxxis I’ve been super happy with the bike. Tackles steep technical climbs with ease and descends with confidence. Although I initially thought about upgrading other lower spec components (drivetrain) (brakes) I decided to just ride it the way it was and I’m glad I did as the bike works great as is. Get one ….they are next level and you just end up being able to ride way more…..

    Great video , I have a trek rail 5 and absolutely love it. I’m also in the process of putting on Magura Mt 5 brakes. I also put on high end Suntour 170mm forks. I recommend going to 155mm crankarms make a big difference and the water bottle I found at my local Walmart a stainless steel insulated water bottle that fits perfect.

    Bro not sure how you ride and talk all at the same time like that. It's a remarkable skill! Just getting back into riding after a 6 year break from it. I bought the Rail 9.8XT based on some of your and other's videos. Awesome review and in depth info man- super appreciate it. And also I just love your enthusiasm. Makes me want to ride all the time!

    Sam thanks for the review. As I mentioned to you a few months back I went with a Trek Rail 7 after demoing the Commencal Meta TR. I've since upgraded with an MRP rear coil with progressive spring, ZEB fork, AXS reverb and AXS GX derailleur, changed tires-cockpit etc and it is a hard hitter. There a other bikes I would have love to have tried like the Mondraker running the Bosch but with low inventory I'm glad I got what I did I really have no complaints.

    Nice review Sam! Wish me luck with the delivery of my 2021 9.8 XT which I ordered in October. It was scheduled for the beginning of May, then delayed to the 2nd of July ...... And now I frankly hesitate to call my LBS to get bad news again. About the LBS I really don't envy them having to constantly say "anytime now" for months. Can't blame them, they are nice very competent people caught in a crisis.

    • @thierrylerinckx1340
      @thierrylerinckx1340 Před 2 lety +1

      The Trek Rail 9.8XT saga continues. I finally called my LBS since the last ETA was a month overdue. Answer: sorry but the delivery is delayed till April 2022.......!!! No wonder they didn't contact me first....Well, IF they deliver that would be an 18 months delivery delay!!! That, to me, rises some grim questions about the bike industry... is it dead???? What would you do? Cancel your order and recover your 500€ deposit? Are there no EMTB available at all? Do you risk even more delay by doing so? Or do you take up a different hobby?

    Thank you so much for another great video really appreciate you work. I have had a Rail 9 on order now for almost a year. Not long to go...hopefully. The rail 9 is a good option if you are happy with an alloy frame but want an upgrade on the suspension components.

    Great review and super impressive POV riding while simultaneously doing commentary! My wife and I are serious about placing an order for a Rail 7 and a 9.7 with a delivery date of next spring, but I am now wondering if we might be happier with the Specialized turbo levo comp carbon. After hearing your comments about the clunking and the smoothness of the engagement, I'm second guessing myself. I have ridden the Turbo Levo, but have not tried the Trek at all. I was wondering what your thoughts were on this. Thanks again for a great review!

      Hey mate thanks 🙏 it’s fun smashing dh runs abs talking bikes. I personally wouldn’t wait 6-9 months for a bike! The gen 2 is a fantastic bike the gen 3 is more a performance bike if you and your wife are hardcore then you will benefit from the gen 3 but for day to day riding the gen 2 is great!

    Just sold my Rail 9.7 and got an Orbea Rise. The Rail is one of the best eMtbs on the market right now in my opinion. It feels as agile as a 27.5 or mullet bike and is so smooth. The suspension is so active and the rear braking is better than anything I’ve ridden. I agree with you on the “clunking” noise. I think it’s actually worse than the EP8 that everyone complains about. That being said, it was such a dialed ride. Now I did put on a Fox 36 at 160mm of travel and a Fox X2 in 230x60mm, which gave me a bit more than 160mm in the rear. The biggest downside for me was the proprietary headset/Stem/spacers. Talk about a pain in the butt when you want to change your cockpit out. Definitely one of my favorites out there.

    • @norbertschmied8976
      @norbertschmied8976 Před 2 lety

      @@SamsBikes the Rise is legit! The range is actually really good and with the range extender I think I can go longer/further than my rail or kenevo with 700wh battery. I’ll be going 160mm fox 36 and cane creek in-line coil with the rise which should be pretty sweet. I rode the Levo SL and the rise is much better for me.

    Sizing would benefit if they took Slash reach geometry. Stack lower on Rail too making it feel like you are front weighted. Not a great bike if you are tall. I tried the L at 6’2” on a bike park DH and felt waaaay too small. Everyone raves about the rail so maybe my expectations were high: My old Diamondback Ranger felt more stable. Given the chainstays remain same across all sizing (447) the best balance size would be medium, possibly large. Wonder why more manufacturers design with variable chainstay length ? I am used to big reach bikes mind so my technique may not suit this bike.

    Hey Sam, thanks for the review. Everything is personal preference, but I like the Kiox display. First of all, when I'm out I can easily remove it and disable the motor. I also like that I can download trails and directions to trails on Komoot, send them to my Kiox and have navigation on the display without needing a phone or other gps device on the handlebars. I also like having a real key. Since it is made by Abus, It is the same key to my lock. Plus, I keep my GPS tracker inside of the battery housing. If it only used an Allen wrench anyone could open it and remove the tracker. I definitely agree that it would be nice to tune the motor. With my i9 Hydra hubs it engages so quickly that it hits the limit in a blink. Would be nice to smoothe that out. Keep the great videos coming. Love the channel...

    Hi Sam, I'm waiting on a XL 2022 Norco Range VLT A2, and I'm wondering if I should get an available Rail 5 instead. Where I live the Rail 5 comes with a 500Wh battery and is $500 bucks cheaper than the Range.But the Range has a way better spec and wouldn't need to be upgraded right away.
    The other big differences are geo and motor, the Range is higher with longer chainstays and I'd rather ride Bosch after hearing the reviews. I've owned a Shimano E7000 and didn't have a great experience with (wet) reliability.
    I'm wondering if the geo difference of the Range would be overcome because of its suspension and travel measured at sag.
    I'm 100kg's and ride wide open steep tech, drops, jumps and some flow. I want support when going deep and getting sideways.
    I'm looking at the bikes that are available in my area now.

    • @SamsBikes
      @SamsBikes  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey mate thanks for your message, I really really Enjoyed the Trek and I think its going handle better than the Norco.. I really liked the look of the Norco and its a great idea with the Batteries but wow 29er with 462 Chainstays. It will DH well but it will be hard to move around. Norco defo know how to make bikes but I feel this was a mistake not putting a 27 or a shorter option. I personally would go the Trek and up grade the forks, brakes and tires straight away.

    Enjoyable review. No idea how you can maintain your commentary down so much of that boney shite! One point of dispute (as a 2020 rail 9 owner) is the comment about the motor being jerky at the start. My understanding is that in emtb and turbo modes at least the motor is designed to boost up at the start to get your momentum going on the uphill starts which I really need as a not very strong rider. Is it possible that this contributed to your concern on that issue? Do the other bikes give you that little bit extra at the start to help on the uphill?

  • @vickisharp6959
    @vickisharp6959 Před 2 lety +1

    Small Bump Chatter in the rear suspension is annoying. The chatter gets worse with higher air pressures. Is there a good more plush shock that would eliminate the chatter. It would be cool if you could compare rear shocks to find a better more smooth ride over little bumps. Thanks Sam

    • @SamsBikes
      @SamsBikes  Před 2 lety

      Vicki chatter is common on cheaper suspenion set ups but only if your really moving fast a coil will help this or a more expensive shock im a massive fan of the x2. from fox

    • @vickisharp6959
      @vickisharp6959 Před 2 lety

      @@SamsBikes I just discovered i had too much air pressure in my Rail 5 shock. I lost about 10 pounds since riding, so i had to reduce air pressure in shock to increase sag to 30-35%. Ride is now smoother with less chatter.
