  • This pillar kit is for a Ruger American rifle on a Boyds Stock. The pillars are 6061 aluminum. You will need to drill the mounting holes on the Boyds stock fit the pillars and you might need to file or sand down the pillars (depending on the stock). This is the first step in pillar bedding the stock and replacing the plastic hardware provided with the Boyds Stock.

    Boyd's stocks for the Ruger American COME WITH STEEL V-BLOCK pillars, a new trigger guard, and all the hardware you need for the upgrade. Instructions & a bedding kit are also included.

    I just bought a pillar kit today for my Ruger American Predator. I am looking forward to getting it in and installing them in my new stock. Also, I just realized I live very close to V3 Precision!!!

      How critical is it to use a drill press? I don't own one. If I drill it by hand and it's not 100% straight will it still be ok?

    On your next Boyd's stock for the American, the proper upgrade step is to epoxy the V-blocks using Devcon...you apply the epoxy on the front and sides of the Front V-block...and on the rear and sides of the Rear V-block. Once you've coated the V-Blocks, you insert them in their respective recessed locations, you coat your action, action screws and chamber area of the barrel with Kiwi Wax, assemble the barreled action to the stock, and run your screws in until finger tight. It is best to mount a rear scope ring, as you want the epoxy to 'cure' with the rifle turned 'Upside Down'.....let the rifle's muzzle and the rear scope ring be your resting points as the epoxy cures....
    Once cured, the rifle can be removed, the wax can be cleaned up and that will complete your procedure. The Ruger American's geometry doesn't benefit from any kind of pillar installation. The V-Block design give the action a solid foundation, which is why Ruger refers to it as their 'Power-Bedding' system. Adding pillar collars only increases the chance of stock splitting.

      I just purchased a Boyds stock for my American and selected their preinstalled pillar option. At least its on them to install it.

      Also, having the pillars will keep the wood from compressing when you torque the action.

    That is a nice looking stock. The one I ordered from Boyd's has a lot of "whitewood" running through it. It did improve the accuracy considerably.

    I've seen the lugs for this stock and rifle bedded, and it turned out very nice. I wish Boyds would offer similar options for other rifle manufacturer's.

    Did you glass the pillars before the action or at all? I have a RAP LH 6.5 and a boyds prairie hunter LH stock LH action, V3 pillars on the way, and brownells agraglass in hand. First bed job...

    Thanks for the video!
    I do not support the sales of Boyd's gun stocks based on 2 horrible desperate experiences with their staff. Now that they have jacked their pricing by nearly 50%, I recommend any other stock manufacturer. Bell and Carlson for example.
    After several emails and phone calls, their reps in the offices ignored my need for clarity on both separate occasions, I was treated very poorly with sighs and snarky comments. Giving model numbers, serial numbers, barrel styles, etc., I don't know how or why they think it's my fault for receiving this treatment.
    No apologies, no satisfaction, no clarity. I'm not a smithy, but I know my way around a firearm pretty well. No excuses for this kind of treatment.
    Boyd's never offered me any apology or satisfaction. I will spend my money else where and steer anyone I can clear if them until I have gotten what anyone else in my situation deserves.
    Boyd's knows this and I will continue to write these posts until someone steps up, lime they should.
    Again thank you for your video, you did well. I'm glad you've found a more positive experience than I have with Boyd's.

      I ordered an at one for my ruger american LA, It came with splinters on the top side of the gun to the extent they were peeling off chunks of wood. They took care of me, told me to cut it in half and sent another one. The new one arrived a month ago, i cut it open today and put the gun down inside the cavity and it sits up about 3/16ths too high and the rear spot where they put the collar for the mounting bolt is split clear thru the stock. all the bolts are too short also. I sent pictures again and will have to see what happens. This was to be a 5 minute job. Yes i was going to bed it but nothing fits good enough to even start the project in the first place. Im saddened from this. If i start grinding the back down to fit the gap in the front fore stock is going to widen a whole bunch. Im afraid my lines alone the sides are going to look horrible.

    I'm going to be bedding my first rifle shortly...quick question. Are the lugs installed on top of the pillars for the action to sit on top of or does the action sit directly on top of the pillars?

    • @V3Precision
      @V3Precision  Před 5 lety

      You need to install the lugs on top of the pilars, then seat the action on the lugs.

    • @johnowen7105
      @johnowen7105 Před 5 lety

      I also wish the video had gone a bit longer too. I was hoping to see what you were going to do with the V lugs and how all of that was going to fit together. I guess you'd epoxy the whole thing at one time to ensure that it all fits together?

    With all the work required, whats the benefit of this stock? It looks nice, but i see it as a bunch of hassle for shooting under 800 yards that i do with the standard stock it comes with.

    • @realtruenorth
      @realtruenorth Před 6 lety

      Sven Davison I want one for target shooting, and use my factory stock for hunting since it's so light. But for target shooting I want the heavier stock and it looks nice to.

    • @supremeirohnic
      @supremeirohnic Před 6 lety

      As they say, if it isn't broken, don't fix it. However with a wood stock you can make a potentially much more rigid platform, especially if it's bedded. The pillars are good for preventing the stock from warping under screw torque and are worth it. Many polymer Savage rifles come with pillars in them from the factory and even models without the internal aluminum "bed" are said to shoot well. Without pillars, a rifle can be very sensitive to action screw torque in regards to its ability to group. I hope the guy in the video plans to epoxy them otherwise there's not much holding the action down

    @V3Precision Great video and thanks for sharing. I own the same rifle but left handed and ordered the prairie hunter left hand Boyd's stock. I failed to read in the description of the stock that it is a left hand stock for a right hand action. I contacted Boyds and they do not make a left hand stock for a left hand action and will not accept a return. At first glance it looks like the right and left side are mirror images with the exception of the cut out for the bolt handle. My question is, can I make a cut out on the left side of the stock to allow for the left hand action/bolt handle?

    • @V3Precision
      @V3Precision  Před 6 lety

      Matthew Dearden Interesting...I would take the bolt out of the action and see how it fits. If it fits well, you might be able to mirror the cutout.
