5 New Trail Bikes Battle The Impossible Climb | 2022 Fall Field Test

- When anyone mentions the name Whistler around mountain bikers, A-Line’s groomed berms and jumps come to mind, but the surrounding valley offers some incredible riding too, it’s just very steep and extremely technical. That’s why the No Flow Zone was the perfect place to host another Impossible Climb.

Each bike should get two rounds of climbing and in reverse order on the second round to even out learning curve and strength of the rider.
This extremely unscientific, and not truly measurable approach to testing is the kind of stuff I LOVE.
cool, you should avoid watching it then. Maybe find another cup somewhere on the internet that is half empty
@@jankie55 Why should qualm avoid watching the kind of video that they love? And why did you babble about a cup and a half empty internet??
@@gatoryak7332 This guy is not a good climber. That flaws the test from the get-go.
Gives you an idea of how the bikes do and you get to see if there’s any glaring issues or things that may not work best for your local trails or riding style. That’s all.
@@ChopperChad How about pushing racing geo's on Avg. Joes? I still ride my 68 degree HT / 74.5 degree ST and it easily conquers everything OH has to offer on trail... speaking of local trail needs. I put a 2022 Rock Shox Pike 150 fork and a 2022 Rock Shox Deluxe Ultimate shock on and my 2013 Stumpy Elite rips better than ever. You don't always need a new bike. Total cost = $1100 in major upgrades in 7 years. Total investment = bike: $2200 used + $1100 = $3300. Carbon bras, carbon cranks, XTR, etc. Also, the bike is alloy and under 30lbs. LLS is not the answer for all.
It always feels like he has a predetermined bike that he wants to get the furthest
Thank you for being consistent doing these videos for us
So, the Gist of this is, if you're an avg person who isn't a dentist or doctor, doesn't live in a MTB paradise like Whistler with that terrain, get the Norco for a great, all around trail bike for about $8k less than the rest of the bike and take the family on a vacation to Whistler ;-)
Spot on! 👍🏻
"A fraction of a cost" on the Norco is an understatement.. it's more than half the price vs these crazy priced bikes.
1/2
Is a fraction there bud
I will take a norco and a trip to Whistler any day
This one seemed like he didn’t really try. It’s like front wheel lifting a tad , give up lol.
except the norco, out of the saddle and pushing through the wheel spins.
With the Yeti he wasn't even struggling, he just got off the bike. Very lame.
That's the most important test to me. My local trails are very rough, old school punchy XC-ish but I need something a little burly for the descents. That fluid really impresses me, albeit having only 130mm of travel, which is borderline.
I have the previous gen fluid fs1 which has 120 rear 130 front, and it handles everything I throw at it just fine, from steep double blacks to fast rough and rocky.
@@benjy288 it's the 6ft drops and jumps that make me skittish
@@stephangauthier911 It will be fine, I've done drops at least 4 to 5 feet (possible more) on mine no problems.
@@stephangauthier911 🤣 you just need a hard tail
This is a pretty standard climb where I live…😢
The Scott it like something Casper’s dad woulda invented with all the freakin levers. You’ll go to hit the dropper lever n a blade comes out n starts shaving your face
Seems like this should have been released before the round table discussion. Great vid, though.
Idk looks like this guy didn’t give max effort. I’ve found other impossible climbs somewhat informative, but this one blew.
Thought the same thing, felt like he just gave up on most of the bikes lol
He can't climb to save his life.
i foresee a price hike for the norco in the near future.
As an environmental scientist it amuses me to no end how various bike people describe soil types and condotions. Great video anyway!
Leave the bikes next to the trail where the rider stalled on it! Would be more illustrative.
that nasty trail
We need mike levy on the impossible climbs!!!!!
Really need to see the bikes with a rider who moves around, and can move the bikes around too rather than just pedal in neutral
Is that a bike or jeep trail?
Yang kutunggu tunggu
Tarmo would've rode them all to the top ;)
Are you looking for impossible climb test pilots @pinkbike? Asking for a friend 😅
I think that it would be interesting to watch the same rider attempt the same climb with the same bike five consecutive times.
This is pure speculation but I would like to think that if they have bad luck on one try they give it another chance until they feel it is a fair representation of the bike's ability, and just edit it out.
Do you have any idea how toast that rider's legs are gonna be by the last few bikes haha
@@mrvwbug4423 well he was a pro at one point so I would think hes got pretty tough legs
Gave up so easily on the Yeti - they're not paying you enough aye ;)
the norco pedals better because it weighs more... I owned the sb130 and it climbed walls. you gotta ride them differently.
you should fly me up there to do your testing. central tx is all hardpack, rocky/rooty tech - it's a good teacher. maybe I can show you how to ride the damn thing :)
When a biker from Texas tries to toast a biker from BC 😂
@@logankurtz1933 idc if he's a world cup DH champion, dude can't climb tech to save his life
Oct 1? Jesus that’s a lifetime ago
Why even talk about those other bikes when the $4000 Norco IMO is winning this field test, save $6k and get the Norco, BTW I own and ride a Trek and an Ibis, both bikes are way more expensive used then the Norco but I doubt they're better bikes, more blingy but not better.
I dont know. The separate review of the Norco both Levy and Kaz talked about more pedal bob than the others and that would be a complete deal killer for me. That might be why it did well in this vid bc of the low traction technical trail, but I can’t stand bikes that do that. I would pay way more to not have that. But that’s just me.
@@dadventuretv2538 Wasn't that big a deal to them, Levy wasn't bothered by it at all
@@mothraman3195 yeah I know. But to me it would be. It’s probably my biggest pet peeve on a bike. Might be to others too. So for me I don’t care how much cheaper it is, if it has that, I’d pass. All Im saying. Different strokes and all.
all have to run the same gear too
Maybe it's the audio but those shifts with the Scott sounded late and ugly.
Looks like the trail Shit Happens, definitely not something I'd want to ride up!
@TextOnTelegrm-Pinkbike4 is the surprise an unprecedented amount of spam?
Não me parece tão impossível assim kkkk..
Why do they keep putting this guy on the "impossible climb?" Bc he is not a good climber?" He stands or is in a neutral seated position only. He obviously never rode short TT lengths and rarely moves forward on the saddle with pressure. I ride impossible climbs daily on hiking trails... not designed for bikes. Put Levy on the climbs.
Get this man a job @pinkbike….
Although he moved his body on the Norco, the one that went the furthest, and stayed neutral on the others. 🤔🤷♂️
Standing pedaling is essential for technical climbs. Levy stands when he climbs. MTBers who don't stand most of the time are doing themselves a disservice.
@@gatoryak7332 Did I say you never stand? You bury the nose of the saddle into you taint and pump your arms in front to get over roots and rocks. There are times to get out of the saddle and then quickly replant back on the saddle to get traction. He does none of that.
@@petedog9581 Did I say you say you never stand?
I don't know about "you", but I don't need to bury the saddle in my taint, nor do I need to plant my taint on the saddle to attain traction. Riding like that is using pre-dropper post technique.
You do you, but when you describe your technique, the proper pronoun is "I".
not surprised
Still can't climb.
I'm sorry, seriously? A climb test over that short a distance? No power meters either? Nobody witha fraction of MTB intelligence could give this the tiniest amount of credence. #Pinkbikes I'm very surprised at the channel.
Wow, that's very complex scenario, keep up the weak work.
There is nothing scientific about this test
👎
different travel bikes... pointless...
I can't even watch these bike reviews anymore, legit practically say the same stuff every video and review practically the same bikes. Totally a joke, can barely watch any of these pinkbike videos at all. Same stuff we've seen for years and lacks anything interesting. Even the pink bike academy feels like they didn't do that right this year either.
yet here you are, with your sunny disposition. Have a great day!
Somebody has the wintertime grumpies haha...
MTB tech has pretty well matured, all the bikes are using one of two brands for the drivetrain, and one of two brands for the forks, varying a degree here or there in frame geometry. Perfectly good bikes cost $3k-$5K with diminishing returns for spending more.
So what's left to do? Wait for riding season I guess. Go skiiing maybe...
@@youtubeaccount9058 I have been bruh, the snows actually been so good
@@jankie55 Pinkbike stooge?
They have to sell you stuff Aaron Gwinn needs, but you think you need. Of course, every new leverage curve in suspension design means you need a NEW BIKE! How can you descend w a 67 degree headtube angle? Lol. Bike lust is what these vids are about.
MOAR ALLOY
Its like the 15th video about the same 5 bikes. I think everything has been said and shown 88 times over now. They are the same bike with 0.1% difference...so the topic is dead and done a loooong time ago. Move on already
