- The Tern GSD S00 is a sturdy, reliable, non-flexy, compact electric cargo bike with plenty of accessories to transport kids or even other adults, rated to haul up to 400 lbs. Highly visible with reflective tires, frame and bag decals, and integrated LED lights, great fenders and chain protector. Can be stored vertically on the back rack in an upright position to fit into elevators, closets, and other tight spaces, optional second battery and efficient mid-drive offer up to 150 miles per charge. Only available in one frame size but the Andros stem and telescoping seat post fit a full range of body types, despite having fatter tires the smaller diameter and lack of suspension can be jarring, the bike can be a bit tippy side-to-side and it's heavy at 71.5lbs.

Great video, as always. We love this bike. You should have put Chris on the back of the bike to show it carrying cargo though
We sold one last week to an engineer here in Fullerton she absolutely loves it and with the clubhouse accessorie an Yepp Child’s seat little Evann can go along with mom.
That's awesome! They did a great job designing the GSD originally, so it feels similar to the 2017 model but I still enjoyed taking a close look and I think the Enviolo is a great addition ;) ps. made it back to Canada safely! Great review as always. As someone who is over 6ft I would appreciate one of the reviewers being tall to see how the bike handles taller riders.
Great and informative video - thank you. I do feel the Tern representatives should drop the sunglass however, even if it is sunny. It creates a sense of distance (or you "don't want to know us") between the viewer and the people representing the product, which I don't think they want. Otherwise great product, loved it :)
I've had the S10 pretty much since day 1 and have loved it. The only issue I had is the brakes. The Magura MT5 is a weird brake and it would gobble, shudder, grind and vibrate on hard stops. I tried switching pads, rotors everything, and I finally gave up and threw on some Shimano Zee's and haven't looked back. Stops quietly and firmly like a quad piston caliper should.
Very interesting, thanks for this input... I wonder what the issue was and if anyone else here can chime in with similar experience or fix tips? It braked fine for me on the review but it was a brand new bike and I was just a single guy riding.
This sounds like an adjustment issue. Perhaps the caliper needs aligning? The pads might need to be replaced after the adjustment.
@@newschoolnerd no, we did everything. New Wheel in SF helped, and they run into this issue frequently. Its not a facing issue either.
@@ElectricBikeReview if you look at the MT5 pad, its much bigger than the rotor stopping surface, so I suspect that the throbbing and shuddering are the rotor cut outs passing through the pads. The Shimano Zee calipers are night and day difference, so much quieter and smoother.
gnome chompski interesting. I guess part of it might come from the additional pressures of SF hills. We haven’t had this issue in NY and we’ve sold quite a few GSDs. Thanks for sharing your experience though and I’m sure the folks at the New Wheel are taking good care of you.

Tern's design, attention to detail, and accessories are 2nd-to-none but as a single rider I'm holding out for a nice quiet and powerful Bafang with Nviolo, belt drive, and from-stand-still thumb-trigger throttle (full USB charging would be a huge plus). I would probably do best with a Vektron, but GSD could still be a contender.
Good input, do you know of any company working on a project like this? Tern has used Bafang for one of their Vektron models but I'm not sure if it has a throttle?
The Best E Cargobike i have seen... Would be a perfect vehicle for me... But its 4800€ with one battery :(
Smart bike, very impressive. I hope Yuba is watching, I might upgrade to an updated Mundo V5 if they steal some of the good design ideas. I'll stick with the mid drive from eRAD for now, 1000W with throttle is a blast and slays the hills even when fully loaded. The Tern looks terrific for groceries and regular cargo etc but I've hauled bookshelves, dining room tables and chairs and even a recliner on my Yuba, just not sure how I could haul big awkward loads on a much more compact bike like the Tern. With an ambitious attempt on the Yuba and a dozen cargo straps I sometimes end up looking like the Clampets rolling into Beverly Hills.
What model of bike do you currently have that has the throttle?
Yuba Mundo with eRAD 48V 1000W mid drive from Lectric Cycles. The motor is a refinement of the Bafang BBS02 although Bafang have made some improvements since 2016 as well.
what kind of fast charger is he carry in the video?
Anyone know how it rides manually? Like if you don't turn on the motor does it ride like a regular bike?

Hey Court. I’m curious to know your thoughts on this GSD compared to the R-M Multicharger, with respect to functionality and handling (no kids). Appreciate any input you can offer.
The GSD and Multicharger are both excellent bikes. If you're not carrying kids just looking at the bikes for their functionality the GSD has a lower center gravity with it's lower wheels. They are both available with a derailleur or a Enviolo hub, but the Multicharger has a belt. The Multicharger would be available as a HS variant, but otherwise, they are both available with a single or double battery. The GSD is always built to be able to accommodate 2 batteries, the Multicharger would need to have that option selected at checkout. Both have a similar length, but the GSD will be a bit more compact for storage.

Chris at Propel Thanks Chris. Appreciate your feedback. I currently have a R-M Delite GT Nuvinci but find the rear rack is very limited when carrying any kind of cargo (e.g. groceries). So I am flip-flopping between the Multi-charger and the GSD. I like the more upright riding position of the GSD, so it’s slightly in the lead right now. I’m located in Ottawa, Canada just across the border from northern N.Y., and have had bike delivered there in the past. Will keep you posted! Thanks again.

Wonder why it has a chain tensioner to push the chain low to the ground? On other bike with enviolo gear don’t have this.
but, other Cargo bikes? A cargo bike is longer, is it not?
I also wonder, why not using a carbon belt drive? This is one of the rare setup with Enviolo gear and a chain with tensioner.
My one problem now with Ebike reviews is so many are all using Bosch. It has an upside but would like to see more unique power systems on bikes. More display innovations as well. Love that Tern is innovating with cargo bike frames and folds though.
Probably has something to do with the high/mid-end e-bikes all using batteries that are UL-certified. Bosch tends to be the go-to for that. We might need to wait for other battery/motor manufacturers to catch up on that certification.

I wish. The yellow one is more than twice what I've ever spent for any vehicle. What is availabe for a blue collar city dweller who needs an e-bike that is compact, stable, and can carry cargo? Josh Hon, I challenge you: make something your favorite street food vendor in Taipei could use. Then maybe working-class Americans could afford it, too.
Get a DIY kit from ebay, perhaps? Buy used, bikes hardly show any wear when handled properly. The battery and gears from the motors are a different story of course. But somtimes, you can be lucky when someone bought it and hardly rode it for more than 400 miles and finds out its not for him and sells it again. There are bargains out there.
Radpower cargo bike. $1499 shipped from/to U.S. Not comparing to the Tern in any other way. But, affordable if that's what you got to spend.
Surprised Court still hasn't reviewed the Unimoke. More utility for less. Only downside is that it's not mid-drive.

No USB-charging port? Why then dual battery? ;-). Serious, great bike, would love to put some aero bars on it..... Can the gears work automaticly?
Hans Keesom technically the bike can be fitted with an auto shift system for the Enviolo hub, but this would need to happen on the shop side.
You could also swap the display for an Intuvia display which will allow some USB charging or we could tap into the lighting port for more power.

Even without these options this bike is a great bike and absolutely capable to replace a car in many situations, certainly when combined with trains or the occasional rental car. Although not cheap it can save a lot of money and improve health having it.
Hans Keesom I absolutely agree! AAA reports that the average cost of car ownership for one year is approximately $7,000 when you factor in the car, fuel, insurance and maintenance. If your lifestyle permits this is a great alternative

Nice bike! But no carbon belt, why?
I think the chain length is longer than a standard Gates carbon belt drive... so it would probably end up being very expensive and the benefits of quiet reliability wouldn't outweigh the additional cost. That's my guess :)
Belt does make backframe a bit more complex cause you can't open a belt. Look at bikes that have a belt and you see what I mean.
The last step to perfection
I think only R and M bikes have bikes with a belt and no break in the frame. the carrying capacity on the GSD is 440lbs so maybe they wanted to get it to carry as much as possible and didn't engineer what R and M did.

5k.. this bike or a Lexus LS400 and Honda 250cc scooter?? decisions, decisions.
Well, the lifetime cost of many scooters that have ICE engines is higher, just more maintenance and stuff... and you usually can't ride on bike paths, have to risk it with traffic. I like how quiet ebikes are and how they're clean so you can store inside.
+ exercise and fresh air :) + much more cargo capacity than a scooter

In many states it would become illegal on bike paths if it had the throttle. I see how that kind of thing could be useful for getting started with a heavy load though :)
