Where Do Monks Sleep? | Life of a Monk

- Welcome to the daily life of a monk. When men come to Thailand and ordain to become Buddhist monks, one of the biggest changes that he has to adjust to is where he sleeps. Leaving behind the comfortable life, he transitions to living the simple life. This can be reflected in the way he sleeps. Instead of sleeping on a comfortable bed, he must adapt himself to sleeping in a small brown tent. The monk gives up his possessions and just has his tent, 2 sets of robes, and a thin mat. This is the simple life of monkhood. And in the process of having less, he slowly begins to transform. While he has less materially, he gains more spiritually. In monkhood, we have a saying, we need to: talk less, eat less, sleep less, and meditate more. I hope you enjoy this video. Thanks for watching! #lifeofamonk #monks #buddhistmonks #minimalist

The beauty of simplicity is something I wish more people discovered. Your channel is truly from another realm, a realm of peace, abundance, and creativity in the mundane and simple life. Thank you for continuing to bring this content into a world that has forgotten what its like to simply live, to live simply
Simplicity is the real way of living life. One can live in any condition even in adverse & cope up with situations. Once a person get learned how to live alone ,he/she won't deal with people.. Being alone teach one to become incharge of one's thoughts, emotions & behaviour. Your energy gets preserved & utilised in right manner..When we remain silent, we realise that majority of energy is wasted on dealing with unnecessary stuffs. We relearn ourself being alone with self.
💙💙💙❤
Only problem is to earn money most people have to interact daily
Thank you for the insight. Once a man's basic needs are taken away they turn human to slave and that is what happened to most of the world now.
Totally agree with you.
Well said mam 🙏

The Buddha established 4 types of lineages of his followers.
1. Bhikku ( male monks who have given up householders way of life )
2. Bhikkuni ( female nuns who have given up householders life)
They live in temples/ ashrams/ viharas/ monasteries/ forests, wear yellow robes, depend on the alms willingly given by householders for their sustanance. Main focus is to Learn and practice restraint in conduct of body and speech, meditate to cleanse the mind of defilements and experience clarity about nature and function of mind and body.. thereby realise deliverance from the cycle of repeated births.
In return they support the spiritual wellbeing of lay followers ( householders).
3. Upasaka ( male , living in households)
4. Upasikas (female ,, )
They too have taken the refuge of the Buddha, His Teachings and His Disciples., Therfore learn and practice the same path., but obviously gets hindered due to family obligations which take up time.
During Buddha s time there were thousands of lay followers who had reached the state of Sowan.. ( definite stream entry)
In modern times there are so much resources available to learn the True Dhamma .. The Buddha taught so many alternate routes to the final goal... In His last Discourse, He said to use his Teachings ( Dhamma Vinaya) as the guidance. If "Buddhists " pay more heed to the Sacred Scriptures much more progress can be achieved as individuals and as a society
I'm so inspired by your journey and lifestyle! I hope to reach this level of spiritual attainment someday in life

Hi Nick!
I currently live out of my Prius by choice, since July 14, 2019. I really enjoy it, for the adventure and for the savings. Watching the monk in the video reminded me of my own situation. I work in Portland, Maine, but I will retire soon (am 61 in August.) I love the quiet, pristine environment in which these monks live.
Live simply, need little.
That's a great life Mike. I do that a couple of times in a yr - not easy to find a safe (& legal) overnight parking spot here in my country, but I thoroughly enjoy the liberating experience of living simply. Enjoy, mate🙏
Now that’s what I call cozy

I really wanna have that kind of life just surrounded by the nature and the simple way they live their life, but they put much more attention on their spiritual growing not on their clothes and masks changing

The last time i slept in a tent was 3 or 5 years ago in the forest, and it was really a challenge for me, too cold, bear footprints on the ground nearby the place we were sleeping and marshes which is difficult to traverse, anyway even a week of forest life could teach one a lot :-))
Oh yes. I agree. And where was this? That sounds very scary with the bear foot print. Yikesss 🙈🙈
@@nickkeomahavong01 This was in the north of Russia. The footprints appeared at night on the shore of Usa river, we slept in about 30 metres away from the shore...luckily i had a rifle with me..just in case)))

Looks like the tent I use for camping, except mine is a little more flimsy. I have had the best sleeps of my life in that tent, in the mountains, even if it's raining or freezing or windy. I'llnever be as minimalist as you. I take an inflatable sleeping pad, and make a mound of soft forest duff to put the tent on. I have a sleeping bag, a wool blanket and pillow. I am high maintenance haha!
That sounds very peaceful 😀😀
Thanx sir

One & only happiness in the Earth..Meditation by Lord Buddha 🙏
Love how many windows the brown tents have. Any suggestions of similar tents? :)
One day, I want to ordain. But sleeping in a tent on the ground is one of the most daunting parts for me. I actually used to really enjoy sleeping on the floor. During my early college years, I actually just slept on a blanket on the floor in my room instead of a mattress and I thoroughly enjoyed it. But then I started having back problems and learned that I have scoliosis which I now believe was caused by sleeping on the ground. Now I sleep on a mattress on the ground with a very neutral pillow to try to promote spinal alignment and support. I've also found that sleeping on my side contributes to the twisting of my spine. I don't see how I could sleep on the ground and without going onto my side in the fetal position which used to be the most comfortable position when I slept on the ground (but causes back problems). My scoliosis is slight but causes a lot of pain at night primarily and also pain throughout the day when it's bad. I'd like to know your thoughts on this. Are accommodations occasionally made for people in my position?
Oh I see. It depends how severe the situation is, but we do take things care by case and try to support each person. When you apply online and do your interview with the monk, he'll assess your specific situation 😊💙💙
You are wonderful! I have been watching your videos for some time now. You really inspire me, good sir. I also shared the channel with my friend.
If it's okay, may I please ask: How many hours do monks sleep? Thank you
thanks

My current sleeping situation is a very comfortable spring bed with a pillow and a bolster. I admit that when sleeping elsewhere is quite uncomfortable, but usually I manage to get used to it after 2nd or 3rd night. When I took a meditation retreat several years ago, there was no too much challenging situation because the hermitage I attended was equipped with a lot of good facilities. There are "kutis" for monks and dorm for lay people who wish to practice meditation. the food they provided was very good and nutritious. The monks (bhante) were also very friendly and full of merit.
Oh wonderful. Where was this at? Sounds great.
@@nickkeomahavong01 It's in Kuching, Serawak, Malaysia. It's a Myanmar tradition hermitage and practice meditation under Pa Auk Sayadaw. Most of the bhikkhu there was ordinated by Pa Auk Sayadaw. It's called Tusita Hermitage. But recently the senior bhantes stay at their new hermitage located at Semenyih, Malaysia. It's called Dhamma Earth. If you interested, you can get information from it's FB page, instagram, and google map by searching on its name. If you want to go there for meditation or become a novice monk (samanera), you should apply via its website. Note: if you want to be ordinated as novice, you should apply as lay people meditator first, after you stay for several days, the senior bhante will evaluate whether you could be ordinated or not. So you cannot directly be a novice by the time you arrive there.
