So Disney hired a bunch of teenagers, made them guest stars even though they were basically the whole show, purposely left them out of the minimum number of episodes to qualify them as guest stars so they could be paid a lower rate. And then spent thousands and thousands on production design for that same show? Ik you guys joked about it but the level of mistreatment actors receive is really something else, especially KIDS!!
on the Wizards of Waverly Place podcast whenever stuff like this comes up (cos it comes up a lot) David Delouise is always like “grrr… Disney” 😠 they’re pretty notorious for these kinds of practices, such as rebranding shows like Zack & Cody into Suite Life on Deck to not have to meet a certain time to have to pay the actors residuals

They weren't really kids they were at least 19. I mean it's shitty but I don't know a single big company that doesn't hire half their employees as part time to cut down on benefit payments. I worked for the government at a hospital and even they did it. I was considered casual with no benefits and lower pay but working 45 hours a week. They would keep our name off the schedule and "call us in" every single day so we could be technically considered casual and not full time employees. We were actually below even a part time employee. It's shady but very common. Would be nice if they made such practices illegal although it would probably lead to many losing jobs altogether.

I watched smosh back in 2012-2016, but the reason I started watching them again is because I recognized Shayne and Damien from So Random lol

When I was younger I used to genuinely have nightmares about zombieman played by damien. It actually helped to see him be a normal guy irl.

I vividly remember Shayne's Jack Sparrow impression and I used to be obsessed with that sketch as a kid, so finding out the guy from Smosh I'm STILL obsessed with played him was a trip for me 😭

So Random actually sounds funny. I always pictured a Disney Sketch Show for kids as cringy but the Garlic Garden sketch is legitimately genius
It was pretty good. Like All That, but I think Disney screwed it up by controlling it too much.
Right? But from that alone i can kind of tell why it didn't last. They mentioned merchandising, but another thing I think they forgot is how much more censored kids television got starting around that time. I think _Girl Meets World_ is a great example of this because it's predecessor _Boy Meets World_ which did air on the Disney Channel was too "adult" to air on it by the time GMW happened and the show kind of flopped because of that. They could not follow through on the great Mr. Feeny talks 1) because you had only Cory and 2) the experience of life/the world needed a lot more edge than Disney allowed during that time.

Shayne’s Harry Potter bit on So Random had me crying laughing as a child that was iconic. So Random was on when I was just phasing out of Disney age and it was one of my favorite shows

As a teenager watching disney channel with my younger siblings, I was beyond confused by what was happening with Sonny/So Random. It's so fun to hear them discuss it over the years, but this episode just brought to life a little nostalgia for watching this with my sisters and going "bro wheres that Demi girl?"

I looked up the Billy Mays sketch on youtube, and that pause Shayne mentions after his first line is there, but there's laughter over it, so it's unnoticeable. However, no one is going to remember that "mistake" because all of a sudden Tony Hawk pops up dressed as a lunch lady! So Random was a completely different animal
I was having Damien withdrawal but now I've seen him in like 3 videos so I'm much happier now.

So glad Damien got to be here (after being sick for the Halloween SmoshMouth ep). I watched Disney Channel in years prior to Sonny with a Chance/So Random, so its cool to hear the stories Shayne & Damien have from their time on the show.

I'm surprised Disney never went for a sketch show seriously, given that Nick had All That for so long and spun out a couple shows out of that (Kenan and Kel, Amanda Show and then double spinoff Drake and Josh).
It was probably for the reason they mentioned here that they couldn't sell merchandise off this show cause there were no main characters and merchandise was what kept kid shows alive. Even Young Justice got cancelled cause not enough toy sells
Nick has real advertisers and Disney doesn’t so I’m assuming that it worked more for Nick bc of that

Smosh is the only reason I know what so random is. The way they used to talk about it had me under the impression it lasted/ they did it for way longer than they actually did.
I wish Goldbergs could have lasted longer! I loved the show before finding out Shane got on there & then seeing him was a truly awesome moment!
“So Random” only had one season, but it was functionally just a continuation of another show with a changed name, and everyone, including the audience, knew that. It was a long season, with 26 episodes. The show that it was a continuation of had 2 seasons with a total of 47 episodes. Taking those 2 together, that’s a normal episode run for Disney at the time. It’s a little low, but not abnormal. And the show (when I say ‘the show’ I mean both shows together) had a pretty large cultural impact on kids of that era.

I got endlessly ridiculed by my "friends" for watching Disney channel. Turns out none of them were real friends, and looking back I wish I just did what I wanted without being afraid of getting made fun of.

For anyone interested: I tried to find the meaning and origin of the name Zabo, and it looks like it may be a form of the Hungarian Szabó meaning “tailor”. Or that’s what google insists anyway.
There was also some African results and even something from India. But I feel like the Hungarian route may make more sense in this case.

Adam Savage (and others!) have said the same thing about the Muppets. The puppeteers are soo good that you forget the Muppet isn't living. So cool.
20:10 SNL still uses cue cards, not teleprompters.
They make a lot of changes the night of, during/after they record dress rehearsal. Jost and Che are especially infamous for this, as was John Mulaney because he would change Bill Hader’s lines for Stefan, which is why Bill would break and cover his face when he got to certain parts during the live airings.
Dress is also where Lorne decides which sketches get cut. The cue card guys receive the changes they need to make and they rewrite the final sets of cards in time for the live show at 11:30.

As someone who was too old for the era of Disney shows that included "So Random", it was really cool to hear Shayne and Damien talk about it. I have heard them (and the other "SR" members) talk about the show and their time at Disney, in the past, but this time seemed much more informative about how Damien and Shayne were progressing and evolving, both together and alone, during this period of time in their lives. To see how far they have grown, and how much their lives have circled back around together, is so heartwarming and really displays the many depths of their friendship.
If you want to absolutely blow Amanda's mind, you can let her know that Miss Piggy was originated by Frank Oz who also was Fozzie Bear, Bert (sesame street), and Yoda, among many many many many many many many many many many many many many many other famous puppets. Go ahead and blow her mind with that in fact, pretty much all of the original Sesame crew was mostly men, which is why there weren't a lot of female characters in the Muppet show ( I'm talking specifically about the Muppet Show in the 70s, by Muppets tonight there was definitely more inclusion and on the other programs like Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock they had a bit more diversity. There were still female characters occasionally who were voiced by women, but if you look at the main well-known cast of characters, the most prominent female characters I would say are Miss Piggy and Janice and they're both voiced by men). It's actually a really interesting thing because this sort of accidentally set the precedent of a lot of male puppeteers voicing and Performing female characters for a long time, which is kind of persisted a little bit in how people cast things today, but Sesame and the Jim Henson company have been a lot better about inclusion.
It's fun to see that Shayne and Damien have always been this way

I would’ve been in middle school when this was out but don’t remember watching it at all even with a younger sibling. But when Shayne said “Simple Country Boy” that unlocked a deep memory of that phrase being buried deep in the vault of my brain somewhere. I looked to the camera like Raven having a vision.
So did Damian say “I need to learn how to sell JEANS” or “I need to learn how to sell GENES” because those are two different things which made me laugh twice
Jeans, I think he explained somewhere that he was working retail for some time (don't ask me when or in which video, I have no idea, it just sounds familiar) 😅
Edit: as a biotechnologist, the thought of selling genes made me chuckle!

oh man, i used to love smosh and so random separately back when i was a kid. i had stopped watching smosh by the time the new cast came in, so i didn't know they were in it but i swear the only reason i got back into smosh after so many years was because i recognized shayne and damien and was like, "hey! i know those guys from so random!" what a full circle moment. their friendship is so sweet.
it’s crazy how much i LOVED sonny with a chance and so random and had no idea who shayne and damien were back then and now i watch them consistently and smosh is one of my favorite youtube channels ever.

I vividly remembered both Damien and Shayne from So Random when they mentioned it early on. I definitely knew they looked familiar when I started watching Smosh but couldn’t place them. Both of them are very talented people who also happen to be very good people as well. It’s rare to find men their age that are sensitive and compassionate the way they are and it’s refreshing to see it. Tons of people in the fandom have said it already but I’ll repeat it: Find someone like one of these two.
