  • Update on the shed and the robot progress, a feed auger and putting some panels in, saving lambs from themselves and the baldest lamb I’ve ever seen. Making compost with EWE GROW.
    in 2009 i had no experience of farming or the realities that came with it. That soon changed when I met my other half Roy, I had a job as a carer and in every spare moment threw myself into farming. I had only ever driven a Nissan Micra and had experience with horses, I learnt the hard way as nobody had the time to show me and soon after arriving I found myself mothering on calves to three quarter bred limmy cows. We spent every available moment on the farm between our day jobs. Fast forward to 2016 two children later we moved into our very own farm overlooking the northern Pennines, Laitha.
    we are in a transitional period at present and will finally be milking cows and making the final switch later this year, after years of planning and implementing infrastructure we will be milking 120 Jersey cows on two Lely robots. This will be a huge change and a steep learning curve
    I will be taking you all along for the ride so hit that subscribe button and see you every other day for farming vlogs.
    I am overjoyed to be a farmer. I feel so fortunate every day to wake up and do what I love and even better share it with the world and hope it inspires more young people from Preston to spread their wings and think outside the box the world doesn’t need more childcare workers or hairdressers it needs more farmers.

    That compost is a great venture and great to see they aren't using coconut coir like almost every other compost company. You know as its a lot more eco friendly to have organic waste shipped from the other side of the world to make peat free compost in the UK

    Just spread about a tonne of our own ,home made ,no chemicals compost, around the plot.
    Gorgeous ,dark , nutrient rich.
    Some say dig it in .
    Others say leave it on top as a mulch surpressing weeds and let the worms and rain do the work.
    I miss our old supply of spent hops as a mulch.
    Smells of treacle,chocolate and aromatic baby beers.
    The old boys used to piss on the compost heap saying it added extra. I think they were just lazy barstards ?

    I am surprised the operation is pneumatic as that is a total loss system whereas hydraulic recirculates.

      It doesn't really matter as air is free, oil on the other hand....😅

    • @glynluff2595
      @glynluff2595 Před 10 dny

      @@jonathans1955 Yes if does matter if you have spent your life as a Production Engineer. Air is not free when it has to be compressed and stored in a tank which on industrial premises like a farm has to be inspected and run by oil or electricity. Every time the pressure reduces below balance it has to be restored. Air is the most expensive format used on production lines because it is total loss.

    • @jonathans1955

      @@glynluff2595 begs the question, why Lely went with air then?

    • @glynluff2595
      @glynluff2595 Před 10 dny

      @@jonathans1955 I would be most interested to know. Often in industry formats continue from previous designs and there is sometimes a benefit in price. However, if you are looking at efficiency saving if year by year as management require you to do by reducing your air consumption especially in sorting stations you make considerable gains. This is why Production staff get very cross with operators who fiddle with pneumatic adjustments - and believe me they will! I can see that there at be desire to make matters quickly in development and pneumatic’s is quite good at this with pipe and plug but one you have sorted the principle then hydraulics may well have advantage over the working period for which the machine is designed. Both require electricity to prime but hydraulic oil is recirculatory whereas air is loss.
      There is currently great myth about oil and its negation in the affairs of men. This will never ever be eradicated as all moving machines except some very expensive electro magnetic ones require oil and grease to move and transmit power. Often this comes as a mix of North Sea oil and Middle East oil so both types are required.
