The door glass accident has happened to me also. May I suggest that you rig it to prevent it from happening again with either a tether strap or a bumper?
I really enjoy your blog and it reminds me of growing up on an alphalfa farm and 200+ beef cattle, plus working at our next-door neighbor's dairy farm. It was a hard but satisfying life to me. I still miss it 40 years later.

Hi from germany sry for my bad english..
If manure and digestate are incorporated into the soil immediately after application, this reduces ammonia losses by up to 90 percent compared to wide distribution.
The manure is immediately buried in the ground using the manure tank, where a cultivator is attached at the back, and the plant then has 30 percent more yield in the harvest at the end of the season.

@@MellowYe77ow That's nonsense, there is no loss in floor quality! It promotes soil life and brings nutrients to where the plant needs them. In Europe, 70% of farmers do it and the number is increasing. If you don't test it yourself then you can't have a negative opinion about it.

We had the exact same issue in the Yakima valley when we tried to get heifers out of the muck. One of the employees came up with the idea: take a long rope or hot fence wire, tie it to a corner where the opening is and then go out into the corral and pull it tight and then just funnel the heifers out as you walk to the other side. Worked great. Maybe one or two got behind the rope…

We always had chains on the storm doors back in the day. They could never hold up against a wind that was strong enough to rip the door itself from an adult's grip. At times, even the piston closer would rip out from the frame in a gust. I was thinking if a block of high density closed-cell foam glued to the point of first contact on the cab body might last long enough to be a useful door bumper. That glass might still have shattered though.

They sleep in the rain and snow and heat. If they have feed and water and bedding they don't care about the weather, they huddle together if it's cold and they stay warm and dry that way for the most part

I've been told by many ranchers/farmers that healthy cattle are more comfortable in the winter snow so long as they have adequate feed for energy. Their biological options for cooling down in an extreme summer heat wave are limited to non-existent. Rain may deny them dry ground which is something the farmer needs to provide. Please note the sheltered high straw pack bedding area toward the back of each corral. I hope that answers your issues.
