Patricia, I've been following you when Mike was your boyfriend. I watch you grow over the years and I have always appreciated your videos and your knowledge even though I am much older than you. This video is providing a lot of good information for anyone starting in the corporate world. I also thank you for recognizing what our young black men are going through over her. My grandson is a police officer so I am afraid for him when he is at work and when he is out of uniform. Keep up the good work Patricia.

For someone about to enter my final year of my Finance degree, this is GOLD. Omg- --I've felt so unsure and lost for SOOOO long. I've doubted my intelligence, I've become shy about my abilities. Sighs thank you for this!! It's giving me the gusto I need.
Wow you are speaking so many truths right now. Where I work now is the exact same as you were describing with your boss.. and my brother was an accountant at Deloitte.. the amoung of racism and belittling he went through aged him about a good ten years. Instead of leaving he decided to prove all his dissenters wrong, which he did but at the detriment of his happiness, health, and mental well being. As a young black professional, or a young professional at all for that matter, sometimes you have to know when to step away and acknowledge that a high pay isn't worth the cost of your soul.

I graduated back in 2014 and it took me a year and a half to get into my field of study. 😭 I never gave up though I had to leave my home state to even be given a chance. You totally can do it. It may take time but you got this 😊
I love this. Working for top places like Merrill Lynch and Deloitte and now a CZcamsr. It's incredible because most people I watch on CZcams are amazing at what they do even though they didn't make it past high school. It's great to see someone who shows people they can have a creative/YT side as well as a top tier career and education. And it also shows people they can give that up to try their hand at their passion. Awesome video :)

She's beautiful, speaks very truthfully in a very elegant manner, and she not only does videos about vain topics like beauty (which don't get me wrong, I do love to watch). But she also incorporates a lot of real world topics, and talks about her wonderful life and what's worked for her, her successful career stories, and how to manage your finances in a world where a lot of people like to live beyond their means. I just left university some weeks ago, where I completed my bachelors degree in civil engineering. I am 21 years old and I'm starting my first job tomorrow in an engineering consultants firm. I am extremely anxious, intimidated and scared. I am not confident, because I feel like I'm young and not as experience like everyone else. Watching this vid, made me understand that it is quite common for people to feel like this, as I thought I was alone. I am a fresh Engineering graduate, and I can totally relate to you. In highschool, everyone appreciated me and I was so confident. When I joined uni, it was SO competative to get in but I got in, when I did, everyone was VERY smart and creative, our professors had high standards. By time I started losing my confidence, I graduated and I'm thinking of going to graduate school, I hope that my next place will be much better and that my confidence will rise again.

I'm completing an apprenticeship for a big company, which I feel is the most difficult thing I've ever done in my life! I feel like I'm learning, but I am in tears nearly every other day, and I'm so out of my depth. i have a masters and cant get a decent job. i did both of my degrees in the UK yet management jobs want a degree PLUS 5+ years experience. how am i supposed to get experience if u wont give me a job? its so frustrating. i've had to settle for a entry level dead end job. I apply to so many places on a weekly basis. feel like i wasted my time at uni. i cant wait till the day i can make a video like this and talk about journey and how i finally made it. congrats to all of your achievements
I am in my 30's and a lot of my friends did a degree and then masters straight away. And they had the same issue as you have mentioned. I think it's best to do a masters after a few years experience. Keep on applying. Your job right now is to find a job. If you feel your CV is not strong enough have it rewritten by a professional. Always send a targeted cover letter it makes a difference. All else fails set up your own business!!
the entry level job is what gets your the 5 years plus work experience :)
+567Katii I agree, a uni placement is great as well. I did a four year degree inc a 1 year work placement and a stint in a NYC uni plus work experience in the States. I was hired before I had officially graduated.
+567Katii Thing is most people expect really high salaries and positions just on the basis that they have a masters. Uni and the workplace are two separate entities and just because you are exceptional at Uni does not mean that you will do well immediately in the workplace. Experience counts. I started working at 16 and also had two hobby businesses by the age of 21. Believe it or not those businesses got me really good jobs firstly at RedBull then working for London 2012 Olympics on the ecommerce team.

I did not expect an instant management position but I thought two degrees would grant me better opportunities. so when you don't even get Called for interviews it's very disheartening. I'm 29 so it's been over 13 years that I have been working but in those 13 years I don't have management experience so in most employer's eyes I am still under qualified. what makes it challenging as well is when I finished my degree in the UK I had to leave the country because unless your employer can prove you can do your job better than a UK citizen you have to leave the country. now I'm back home in the Caribbean and struggling. I think I would have had better opportunities if I was allowed to stay in the UK

I got an internship at Deloitte and it was intense! Girl, I was like a complete lost puppy during meetings with clients. It was my first job ever and didn't know how consulting works. I'm about to have an interview on Wednesday for another consulting company, an IT consulting where my degree is in Accounting. Yay for learning new things lol. Ohh what am I getting myself into. LOL

Nanami Ocarina Thank you girl :) CPA requires a few years of experience before you can take it. My supervisor had a CIA for internal audit instead of CPA. I'm still working on my Master's Degree so once I have enough years of experience, I think I will. Well depends on your future career choice though. CPA certification allow you to open your own practice, so if you have intention to do so then that would be awesome. Ohh that is useful too if you want to enhance your career at the Big 4, so you would be more qualified for a higher role. Good luck for you! :)
you're so inspirational Pat. i just dont feel like i get the same level of support and/or opportunity living in the south in the US. one day i hope i'll move and get to use my degree to that level of intensity
+Jasmine Brooks well my degree is related to law and politics. I'd like to be continue in that field but long story short I'm living in the south I find most bosses and hiring managers in that field are kinda racist tbh. I hope to move to Miami soon and see how that works.

Cocoa Deluxe yes its a shame. i've done a lot of thinking about this and i really think the reason that the south stays stagnant in racial issues is bc most of us who are fed up just leave, therefore leaving the problem and perpetuating it further. but at this point there's no point in being treated like this.
***** i want success more than anything trust me. but my entire life has been an uphill battle. i had to deal with the issues of racism and being a Caribbean american immigrant (i got shit from both sides black and white), forced myself to be one of 4 minorities in the entire honors program at my high school, then i paid my own way through college. and now that i've graduate and have all of my credentials and life is still shitty. i see classmates with mediocre grades getting hired before graduation and yet here i am with nothing. it all becomes discouraging after a while. how much longer do i need to fight and prove that im worthy until i have no choice but to give up. but i guess this is life and no one ever said it was going to be fair.
+Jennifer yes. Im sure there is a company that will be impressed with you somewhere once they found about it. I live and am from Dallas Tx and "EVERYBODY" is moving here because of the jobs. But man when you look and get the job here, there is no real unity here and white people are undercover racist and its quite segregated. Atlanted still racist but black people thrive there despite it and most have a business..

I literally cried watching this. Im a recent college grad (may 2016) and this really touched me. I was very active in college and I had 4 summers of internship experience coming out and I thought I had enough to offer the real world. After multiple rejections Im still in the process of searching for a job and my confidence has dwindled. Thank you so much for this video it was so uplifting for me :) love your channel. It always brightens my day

Something you reminded me of that my dad always says in Spanish is “deja que otro te diga no” which is basically “let someone else tell you no” instead of already giving up before trying. Like the fact that you didn’t qualify to even apply for your first internship but did anyway and got it! You didn’t tell yourself it wouldn’t happen, you went for it anyway and it turned out amazing because it paved the way for so many other things!

I've finished my 2nd year at uni studying Journalism & Creative Writing and I am literally scared to graduate next year. My ultimate dream is to be an author, but I know that's hard to break into, so that's where the journalism comes in. I thought it would be a good backup, but competition is high I know it's going to be difficult to get into journalism. I don't want to find myself as a graduate, struggling to get into journalism and then settling down in an "average" job that I shouldn't be doing.
I have my Bachelors Degree in Journalism and African American Studies. You can do it!

You will be fine, keep dreaming and keep pushing. Difference between those who succeed and those who don't is effort (with all other things being equal lol). It took me ages to get into medical school, but along the way I got a bachelors and masters degree but i'm finally doing what I work so hard for because I didn't give up, even though I took small diversions towards my goals, it worked to my advantage. I'm also into writing as well. I write health and lifestyle articles for magazines and newspapers, and I am just starting a blog this year. You just have to put yourself out there and knock on doors, esp in the field such as journalism. Good luck :)

Patricia I so related to your work experiences! I went to beauty school and wanted so much to be this great hairstylist but was lacking confidence in myself. I had this one instructor. An older lady who was the best! She gave me great constructive criticism. She believed in me. She told me learn learn learn! Read all that I could about hair. She said in time I will gain more confidence. Also she told me to fake it til I make it. Don't let your first hair school client know that they were your first, etc. I look back now at all the salons I worked in and don't regret a single one. I learned something from each of them. Truly. I ended up owning my own children's hair salon for 5 years in South Florida...of all places. ( I hate the heat!) This was the early 90's. I loved being an owner/stylist but I was terribly homesick so I sold my business, made a good profit and moved back "home" to Boston. I'm having some medical issues that have prevented me from working the past 7 years in hair but I hope to one day go back to it on a part time basis. I don't have children. My work was my child. But I so loved every minute of it! No regrets. Many tears as well, like you, but wouldn't have changed anything! I stumbled upon your channel looking for something else and just wanted to say I truly enjoy your videos. I love fashion as well but am far from a clothes horse. Serious weight gain has left me in t-shirts and leggings for now but one day I hope to be healthier and wearing nicer things, good luck with this new endeavour and I look forward to watching more of your vids! -A great fan from Boston Massachusetts
Wow, what you said about confidence coming with time is so true! I'm a rising sophmore in college and I have my fourth summer job this year. I work at a summer camp and this is my third time being a camp counselor and I just wrote in my journal the other week about how much I've improved since the first time I was a camp counselor. I still have some things to work on such as feeling more confident around older people, but listening to your story served as a catalyst! Thank you so much!

Patricia, a lot of the advice you gave in this video really moved me and resonated with me 100%. Like you were, I am 22, in my first year of a grad scheme in the city, and already struggling with a horribly mean boss, not quite feeling like I fit in with my team, working in a notoriously "'male, pale, stale" industry (oil trading) as a young black African woman. Hearing about your experiences and how you came out above the downtimes has really inspired me and encouraged me to stay positive and remain hardworking and driven. You're honestly a gem here on CZcams and I am so happy you're constantly growing in success. If you would be willing to mentor me, I will be really happy to hear from you.

I am going to be in September on the 2nd year of one of the hardest courses in France (Preparatory Class for Elite Business Schools). I have to study super hard during the school year and even harder during the vacation. I was sort of giving up on revising, procrastinating a lot these past few days. I've been that awkward girl in a group afraid to speak up or ask for help, I've experienced what it's like to have bad managers, and I've experienced the elation of being confident in my skills. But holy shit, when you spoke about your time at Merrill Lynch and that you were young and felt out of place, you are literally describing me right now at my job. I work for a giant insurance company in the states and I'm 23 years old. It's my first time in the corporate world and I just feel so out of place and small. I never talk to anyone because my entire team is at least 10+ years older than me, married + kids. I like the job but damn, not talking to people really gets difficult.
+5my9other93half I'm the same age in the States and found this to be difficult working in sports with no initial sports interest. It challenges you to develop your people skills, when you feel like there are no commonalities between you and your coworkers. Just get to know them for who they are--you'll be very surprised at what you'll find. On paper my coworker and I had nothing to relate to, with an age gap and a cultural difference, but it turned out that we like the same music and the rest was history! Hope this helps. Keep pushing!

+Lovely_Day so what happens to them later? where do they work after crashing. It's true I've noticed that there're very few women working in banks once they hit their 30s. per 10 men there's only 1 woman in a team...
+butterfflyess I can't say for sure but it may be more to do with society changing than companies not hiring women over 30. Eg 10 years ago women were less likely to get degrees in maths and science so you're unlikely to see women in their 30s working in those companies. Hopefully now more women are doing STEM subjects, in ten years time you'd see more women in their 30s working there

This video really hit home! My first job post university was a mess. I gave them so much of me and my manager was mean. I was consistently crying everyday before and after work...panic attacks...lost a ton of weight due to stress...whew...all this to say that there is hope. That experience really taught me that I am stronger and smarter than I give myself credit for. I know my worth! Thanks for sharing :)

Omg I love this video it's so relatable to me..I worked for Deloitte for a year and a half and altogether, the targets were tough and the hours were long, I learnt soooo much! They threw me in the deep end too but till this day I'm so grateful for the experience and hard times. Right now I'm working for a smaller financial firm and recently got promoted for my 'strong work ethic'. This is probably the best job I've been in cause the company care about my personal and career development. I thank God for every experience good & bad as its moulded me from that shy girl in the corner into a positive, confident approachable girl in the office. omg i felt everypart of your story from graduating (i did my MSc) to my first job to a very condesending boss man i feel you. to the point of being very quiet on a team. But im lucky i found one job with a great boss who literally threw me in at the deep end (in a nice way) and i loved it i swam ...that gave me the confidence i needed and i will say that for me being an educated black woman in the UK it was hard (for me) but if you have the right people, around you, work hard keep pushing u stay winning...loved your video it was great!!

Randomly came across one of your other videos (10 Hacks Every Woman Should Know) while taking a break from working on a proposal on a Saturday...for D&T. Crazy small world, and especially since we've had such similar experiences (I was thrown into a meeting alone with the CFO, COO and CIO of a healthcare firm 4 months into the firm). Your advice, anecdotes and experiences are so refreshing to hear. I'm 2 years in and on the verge of quitting since I'm burnt out so this video was a godsend :) I was doubting myself and my professional capabilities and you've renewed my faith in myself and my future!
