My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much.

FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? Over five years now, holy cow.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGearList
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off CZcams? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $5/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jayswanson
Thanks for watching!
What I loved about the 17th when I lived there was the lack of tourists and hipsters. Was a great place to live. Also the cheese shop on rue poncelet was so good!
It's got a lot going on, and it keeps getting better =D
I enjoyed staying in the 17th arr. my first time in Paris because it was basically a residential area and I got to see how parisians lived. I’m an introvert so it was nice to hang out in parks and restaurants that are not always busy. The main attractions are far but I’m used to taking a 30-40 min bus or train as a native New Yorker. I loved not having to spend Montmartre prices on accommodations but being able to walk there everyday to do different things. To me it was worth it if you’re staying more than a week.
Totally appreciate your time and effort Jay (and Cooper’s) showing us around the twenty arrondissements of Paris.
It's been a ton of fun. Thanks for watching!
7:53 I do appreciate the work you’ve put in and you’re a trooper for carrying Cooper across the 17th.
Cooper’s ears peeking out behind your back in the map intro are EVERYTHING!
I meant to add him into the thumbnail, I need to do that
I just got back from nine days in Paris. I was staying on Ave de St-Ouen so Batignolles was very close. I loved that whole neighborhood; great shopping, wonderful restaurants and the Be Bop Bar was the perfect spot for an evening cocktail.
UC-61 looks unique. I love the entrance.
It was pretty fun.
9:18 OMG OMG OMG IT’S PAUL! I’m here for this crossover!
I’m leaving for a trip to Paris in a few weeks and have been devouring your videos these last months. I really enjoy your videos and appreciate your hard work and pain!
Aw thanks =) I hope your trip is amazing!
Hahaha…much, much, much appreciation for all your pain and suffering! (And so wonderful to see your fun and lovely friends, Paul Taylor, and Nathaniel Drew!) I’ve got the PDF Paris in my Pocket, and deeply hoping the App will be up and available by July! Thank you for these fabulous vlogs!!
We're pushing hard! It's had its delays but I'm hoping that the very basic version is available soon, and then we'll keep building from there. I hope your trip is amazing!
❤this is the Jay I love ❤
🍻🍻🍻
Love seeing you and Nathaniel hanging out.
He's a good egg
Love the mix of architecture and a bar where you can get a massage??? Count me in ! It looks like a really “homely “ part of the city. Cheers Jay !
Never liked the look of Boston terriers but Cooper is too adorable and converting me to a BT fan with each vlog I see him. He seems so chill
He's the cutest - I got lucky haha
Jay, these are great. Can't wait for the next episode!
Thank you! They've been so fun to make
I appreciate your efforts in the rain, while I watch from a sunny spot in my New Zealand living room :)
Awesome series on the greatest city in the world !
Thank you so much!
I love these videos..I´m looking forward for the next arrondissement --Thank s for your energy
My pleasure!
It's a place to sleep in a quite area. Metro to the center is like 20 min. No tourists, that's good.
That's true
Thanks for covering some hotspots in my neighborhood. My in-laws from TX have also given Melt their stamp of approval...definitely the best BBQ in Paris.
By far - and especially for the Texan preference. Glad they liked it!
Another good one. Thank you for providing all your useful tips.
My pleasure!
great video, as usual, Nathaniel - hi, I knew I saw you somewhere. I follow your parents' journey in France. I can relate to that since we took our small children and moved abroad as well. Same fears, concerns and joys no matter where you move. Please, say hello to them and I am waiting to see the house they bought. As per the 17th arrondissement - I live in NYC right now. There are very tourist places and others very interesting, unusual but yes, for the second, third time you come. The 17th has a very strangely different architecture, and for those interested in this subject it may be the place to be during the first trip, but if you don't know...... thanks for sharing.
Super useful guide, I've always struggled with the 17th, glad I wasn't alone! 😂
Thanks for the visit ! Allways welcome at UC-61
Hey Jay, watched all your videos for my trip in Paris 3weeks ago! I stayed in Vincennes and maybe you can do a video about that area? Lots of Space Invaders and convenient to get to. Thanks
Great area! I've done a few in the past if you want to find them (5 chateaux by Metro was a good one)
Paul, Nate, and Jay.... THAT would be an interesting lunch! LOL... And Nate couldn't help himself!!! Such a Vlogger! :) I admit, the 17th is an arrondissement that I need to explore more. Going to plan it when I am there in early summer so I can enjoy the flowers in full bloom on the Pereiere !
It's a great neighborhood. HUGE
Jay saying “What is this Bavarian castle doing here?” should be played on a loop because it made me crack up 😂
😂😂
Cool place! Looking forward to my next stay in Paris. Probably after the Olympics next year.
It'll be a very freshly-cleaned Paris then haha
Always entertaining. Sideways Cooper is too cute! 😊
He's adorable to be sure
0:29 OOOOH A STAR CAMEO
I know that that building over the street! Was near a hotel that an aunt was staying at.
Staying at the Ibis Clichy-Bat soon. I almost booked a hotel close to Gare du Nord.....hope i made the right descision.
Still looking for a breakfast place in the 17th.
I'll be skipping the 17th, since I'll be traveling with my dog.
Nothing like caffeine to help you string those sentences together 😂
Yep, I suffer with you, or do I? There has to be one place that has to be to worst. Luckily there are 20 to chose from...😊 the massage might make worthwhile to actually visit there.
It rained.
What’s your opinion of Rue Poncelet market street in the 17th?
Never been, but looks fun, so I'm sure you'll have a great time!
12 comments very good video
Gracias
🙋♥️🍀👍
🥂
Goes to Rue de bayen or Rue de Bayern and askes why is the bavarian castle there. The bavarian dialect also has french words in it like "merci"
If your logic held, there'd be a leaning tower on Place d'Italie and a good taqueria on Place de Mexico. And yet, sadly...
Now I wish there was an In-N-Out in Place des Etats Unis
my what fugly looking buildings....thanks for saving me the trip to the 17th, although Melt did look good
Is that Drake I hear??
