Halbrand is still my #1 suspect for the "Is *he* Sauron?" mini-game. I've been loving this show all along, but this just kicked it into such another level, and got me riveted in two storylines that weren't even my favorite ones in the show. The visuals and production value in this one were incredible, and the horseback sequences were something I haven't seen done like that before.

I think he's going to become the Witch King of Angmar eventually, myself.
In the lore, Sauron _is_ captured and taken to Numenor, where he poisons their minds and even becomes an advisor, leading to their downfall. From what we've seen of Halbrand in Numenor so far, particularly his struggles with the locals, Sauron would have been far more capable. He wouldn't have resorted to theft and gotten into the brawl.

"Sauron's original name was Mairon. He was the mightiest Maia of the Vala Aulë the Smith, and learned much from Aulë in the ways of smithing and handiwork, becoming a great craftsman, and "mighty in the lore of" Aulë's people."
He is a talented shapeshifting angel craftsman. In the books he used another name and shape when making the rings, so it could be that we have yet to meet him. At some point he decides to be good after his defeat, due to his origins he seeks to establish order, that could be his Halbrand form. He then turns back to evil after being disappointed/wronged.

They refer to the Orodruin in an earlier episode, which is the mountain that becomes Mt Doom.
Where the tower is with the falls eventually becomes the pass of Cirith Ungol that has the watch-tower with the orcs from Return of the King.
The cavalry would have used the Vale of Ithilien to ride to aid the Southlanders, which is why there's that one-off "I like the mountains" comment from Isildur as he oversees the construction of Minas Ithil (Minas Morgul but glowing green evil keep) in the books before it gets ruined and corrupted by the Witch King.

    • @ThatBonsaipanda
      @ThatBonsaipanda Před rokem +10

iirc Cirith Ungol is a bit more to the north, next to Minas Morgul and on the same line as Minas Tirith, Ostirith is a bit more down south, where the mountain ridge separates towards the plains.

    • @leonardopribic2661
      @leonardopribic2661 Před rokem +9

@Bonsaipanda is correct...Ostirith is more to the south, you can see it on the map Miriel is looking at in the episode. The Morgul vale is a bit to the north and that is where the Numenoreans passed when coming to the rescue. Minas Morgul stands on one opening to the vale, on the side closer to Gondor, in line with Minas Tirith and Osgiliath, while the tower of Cirith Ungol sits on the other end of the vale, on the side closer to Mordor. Ositirh would be directly south of Cirith Ungol.

I’m with Suraj on his theory about Halbrand. But I get your confusion. If it helps, Sauron can change his form in The Silmarillion book. He is a spirit-like being instead of a physical being stuck in one shape. So when he wants to be a dark lord like in episode 1, he’s a dark sorcerer. That’s probably the form Adar knew him in. But when he wants to appear stealthy and charming, he can appear like a friend. Notice that Halbrand has no one who has known him in the past. He said he was from the Southlands, but these people don’t recognize him. And those people on the raft did not speak to him as if they had known him a long time. He was just another random guy in the sea. As for want he wants, he wants something that allows him to gain more power, the Ring. And he’s going to need the skill of the elves to figure out how to craft it. So it’s in his interest to be Galadriel’s friend right now

This is an indirect connection to this Udun though because Sauron took this name from it's former master's stronghold. So here, Udun means Mordor and Mount Doom as it's origin due to the volcanic activity in that vale you saw in this episode. Her accepting that not matter what she does evil is still gonna rise. Her realising that trying to get revenge for her brother's death is pointless. And we saw her cry for the first time in this episode. And Adar told her some truths and clearly got into her head. Also the way she asked Hallbrand if he can't forgive Alda, the way she said it, was as if she was also asking herself that question about her own quest for revenge. She basically got humbled this episode, more ways than one.

Isildur’s mom died drowning. Isildur dies drowning in the prologue of the fellowship of the ring.
Galadriel saying “Noro lim” (run swift) to her white horse while chasing Adar. Her granddaughter Arwen saying “Noro lim, Asfaloth” to her white horse while trying to escape the ring wraiths w/Frodo.
Here, Isildur’s runs to his father, Elendil, thinking he’s dead after falling. In their future, during the fellowship of the ring prologue, Isildur runs to his father thinking he’s dead but he actually does die.
If memory serves, canonically, during the S.A (Second Age) where this show is taking place, Sauron has his original body & Sauron is essentially a lesser god.
The only way I see Halbrand being Sauron is if Sauron is playing the role of Halbrand well. For Halbrand to subconsciously be Sauron, it would take something happened to Sauron & his body for him to feel the need to hide in a mortal man. Never before have I heard of Sauron possessing any creature.

Arondhir's actor is amazing. Can you believe he was the Twi'lek that Mando and the others went to save in the Republic prison ship? Such a good actor! This is not a spoiler but there is a VERY strong case that can be made for Halbrand being Sauron. Firstly, lol, the name itself, Hal'BRAND' lol. Also, other than what Suraj said, Sauron is an extremely powerful sorcerer and it is assumed that he can take different forms. He could just be hiding in the form of Halbrand. So it's not that Halbrand would 'turn into' Sauron - it's that he already is Sauron in disguise.
Either that or, if you remember from the beginning of Fellowship of the Rings, Theo, or Halbrand could become one of the kings that eventually become the ringwraiths
When that much water is DUMPED into an almost endless pool of magma, the water FLASH-vaporizes and creates an incredible amount of instant PRESSURE, immediately disrupting any balance that was there before it. Here's a helpful flow-chart for Powerful Beings in the Lord of the Rings:
    ** A. Eternal Beings**
    1. Eru Iluvatar (God), maker of the universe, the World; creator of Valar, Maia, Elves and Men.
2.a. The Valar (Greater Ainur/Gods of the World), the fourteen eternal beings made by Eru, and they collectively shaped and guide the World.
2.b. Melkor/Morgoth, the fifteenth Greater Ainur was the most powerful, but sought to make things he wanted and discovered he can only twist reality. Source of all Evil.
3.a. The Maiar (Lesser Ainur) Immortal spirits who can take many forms, and align themselves with different Valar. Cannot be killed, only their vessels destroyed.
3.b. Sauron, a Maia who used to work for Aule the Smith of the Valar, but early on joined Morgoth as his chief lieutenant. Second only to the Valar in power, when wearing his One Ring, which contains the bulk of his power.
3.c. Balrogs, Maia that were spirits of fire that were corrupted into demons of fire and darkness by Morgoth. They can only be killed by beings as powerful as they are, or by those fated to do so (and whom die in the process).
3.d. Wizards, are depowered Maia in human form, with the appearance of wise old men. They were so weakened to avoid temptation, and to prevent them from trying to directly rival Sauron in power. Sent to counsel and advise the people of Middle Earth in defeating Sauron. Certain Elves and beings may exceed a wizard's powers.
    **B. Immortal/Uncertain Lifespan Beings**
    1. Dragons, were created by Morgoth during the war in the First Age. Originally they could not fly, but deliberately breeding them resulted in the conventional dragons like Smaug we see in the Hobbit.
    2. Ents/Ent Wives, are the immortal tree shepherds of the forest, while Ent Wives preferred gardens and fields.
3.a. Elves (in general) they are immortal, but can be slain or die from grief, and are in harmony with nature (can pass over snow, through forests and terrain without leaving a trace), and are depicted in LotR, the Hobbit, and this show as only blinking when surprised.
3.b. High Elves (Noldor) those which lived in Valinor with the Valar, but departed to make war on Morgoth. They are physically stronger, possess more knowledge and power than those Elves who never dwelled there. Examples: High King Gil-galad, Galadriel, Celebrimbor, Elrond is Halfelven but culturally Noldor.
3.c. Grey Elves (Sindar) Elves who lived only in Middle Earth, but are counted as high elves due to the enlightenment of their late King Thingol, and his Queen Melian the Maia. Examples: Legolas, King Thranduil, Celeborn.
3.d. Green Elves (Silvan) Forest dwelling Elves who never lived in Western Middle Earth or Valinor. More wild, less wise, but arguably the most in harmony with nature. Examples: Haldir (LotR films), Tauriel (The Hobbit films), and Arondir (Rings of Power show).
3.e. Dark Elves (Avari) who never journeyed West, willingly, and whom resent the daylight and prefer starlight. IE: Eol.
4a. Orcs, were once Elves that were twisted and corrupted into foot soldiers of Morgoth, and later Sauron. They despise sunlight, and are weakened by it.
4.b. Goblins, while not readily distinguished from Orcs in the books, other than their locations. Depicted in the films as being smaller and more stooped than most Orcs, and having a similar lineage.
4.c. Uruk-hai, as seen in LotR are Orc-Men who are taller than regular Orcs and have a greater resistance to sunlight.
    5. Trolls, are the anti-Ents, being powerful beasts who prefer various habitats depending on type (ie: Cave, Mountain, or Snow troll), and vary in intelligence/weakness.
    **C. Mortal Beings**
    1. Dwarves, longer lived than most men, having lifespans of over 250. Made originally by Aule, they were given souls by God. Designed to be hardy and stubborn opponents to evil, they are not easily corrupted or daunted. They are shorter, b/c Aule only vaguely remembered what Men and Elves were to look like.
    2. Numenorians, are men who are blessed with longer life and maintain their youthful vigour into their 200s, on average. Although their lifespans wain with their gradual fall from grace.
    3. Beornlings, shapeshifters/skin changers.
    4. Halflings (Hobbits, etc), typically live 100 or more years, and have unknown origins. They are much smaller than ordinary men, but have advantages in stealth and throwing aim. Most can't grow beards, while all have hairy feet and despise shoes.
    5. Ordinary Humans, as advertised.

I could, of course be entirely wrong but, I think I've figured out why the show runners are making Galadriel out to be a borderline psychotic, and it doesn't change my opinion of them or the "story" one bit. Spoiler for anyone that hasn't watched/read the Lord of the Rings trilogy:
Remember when Frodo offered Galadriel the One Ring and Galadriel was all "I will become a terrible and beautiful God. All will love me and despair!" Terrible paraphrasing there, but you get the point. I think this why the showrunners are doing what they are doing with Galadriel's story. This is their explanation for why Galadriel said what she did. "Look, see, this is why she said that, because she remembered the time she was borderline psycho! She new the Ring's power would make her even worse than that! Aren't we brilliant?"
