      Either hand did a very credible job of hand driving nails, almost a lost art nowadays. I started framing houses before nail guns were a thing and a crew of 5 would go through a 50# box of 16d box nails a day. It was nice to not have drag around a 13lb nail gun tethered to 100' of hose all day. You both have credible carpentry skills that are serving you well and setting a good example.

    When you are nailing close to the end of a board Katie, turn the nail over and hit the sharp end to blunt it slightly. When you drive a blunt nail into a board it wont split, sharp nails act like a wedge hence split the board. My grandfather taught me this trick 60 years ago.

    One more small tip. Put a diagonal (compression) brace on your beautiful new gate. The brace should go from the bottom of the hinge side up to the top of the latch side. This will help to prevent the gate sagging.

    Hi guys. I’ve been enjoying your posts for a few months now. I know this is probably too late now but I’m an old farmer and I have a tip for your fencing project. When you staple fencing wire like that to wooden posts you should not hammer that staples all the way in but leave the wire free to move … especially to allow for movement due to expansion and contraction during hot or cold periods.

Greg, please make sure Caitie stands to the side of those posts as you drive them, rather than directly in front of you. God forbid, if that hammer head comes off, or you mis-hit & snap the handle, the head will fly directly away from you & could have disastrous consequences! Anyways, keep up the great work & enjoy spring! (Autumn here in Australia)

    As with the previous threads, Katie with the hammer is impressive. Only concern would be not wearing safety glasses. Especially when you are using a steel blade. Had an experience with accidentally hitting a steel post. A piece flew up and hit me just above the right eye. Use to impress the girls at work by hanging a small magnet off it. Finally had it remove by a dermatologist on one of my many skin cancer treatments. Keep up the great videos.

    Hello my favorite Off Grid People :D Nice design of fence and gates. One thing I have learned the hard way though: A gate will last significantly longer if you add a diagonal piece of wood that goes from the lower hinged corner to the upper non-hinged corner with no gaps/in-span (forgive me my english) :)

    I LOVED the wood gate I was hoping for horizontal boards vs vertical boards. In my opinion horizontal boards are more appealing to the eye and prevents dogs or people from using gate with as a ladder to climb over. In addition the gate post should be much larger to be more sturdy for a swing gate. I agree with Gregg using the smaller cheaper posts, to getter done at best price...but from my experience corners and gates should be larger posts. If this was a rush job to contain all the animals I get it. Repairs and upgrades will come later. Staying home full time now you have time. Thank you for sharing ❤

  • @johnhamilton1791
    @johnhamilton1791 Před 3 měsíci +1

    Your gates need a brace running on the diagonal from the bottom on the hige side to the top on the closing side or they will sag over time.

    Great job! I like Katie's muscles showing how it is done - stretching that fence just right without pulling the first pole out of the ground! And then the nailing together of the gate - nails shall go in, straight whether you use the right hand or the left they shall go in - with determination! Working together to get the job done - just a pleasure to watch each time again! Keep it up!

You are a good team no doubt. I cannot wait to get my place fenced off for all of my animals and not just the big ones. Having more space is something I am truly looking forward to in the future. I just hope I'll have equipment to aid me when the time comes. I couldn't imagine doing what you have without the aid of that tractor and a great team putting it all together. Congratulations! @jamorjr1 Před 3 měsíci +1

    What are you planning for the bottom of the fence which seems to be loose enough that the dogs, with minor digging, will push on it to get out. I suppose that if you're running electric wire and put on low enough that the dogs touch it a couple of times, it'll dissuade them from doing it again. There's always the mill and cutting some 2x2 and tying to the bottoms. You guys work really hard I must admit, the work ethic you both have is admirable
