Hi Mia!! I was born and raised in Hawai’i and I appreciate how genuine you were about the whole issue. You are right about how some people think Hawai’i needs tourism for jobs, income, etc. but there are also many people who do not want tourists because of COVID and the other reasons you listed. I love that you are educated on which sunblock to use and to respect the land and animals. You are definitely not one of the tourists who are the problem. Thank you for being so genuine and sweet

I went to Hawaii twice during covid (obviously following all the rules for covid, using reef safe sunscreen, etc.) So I'm glad to hear that. I always try to be a respectful visitor and I got the vibe most Hawaiians are happy to have that, but would also like Hawaii to shift the economy from being so heavily tourism heavy, which I think would be great. Hope you're having beautiful weather for me since I'm in the snowy mountains!

Being born & raised in Hawaii, I opened this video warily because I didn't want to see another CZcamsr I watch disrespect the land or promote tourism to Hawaii in a poor way. I'm really glad that you opened up with the current issue of how tourism is affecting the land and the current populace and the different sides of the argument. I'm also really glad that you brought awareness to being respectful to the reef & marine animals, as most tourists seem to be oblivious. If only all tourists were like you and could promote the economy in a safe/ respectful way😎But seriously, thank you for bringing light to those who may not have known.

Travel companies and accommodation sites that aren’t currently doing so are going to have to step up and start making these sorts of issues much easier for their customers to find out about and understand. It shouldn’t come down to people like Mia to have to be a main method of getting vital messages out. Travel companies make money out of exploiting the destinations so they need to put in some effort to mitigate the results. Yes a tourist might have some duty of care to where they are visiting, but realistically unless the information is easier to find the situation is not going to improve. I really hope more balance is achieved in the near future.

You hit the nail on the head Mia. Respect is the key in all the things you do in Hawaii. My daughter works in the hospitality industry and it has been difficult. The main problem is that some tourists are not wanting to follow mask mandates in some of these establishments. That is the single biggest problem. It's visitors such as you and your family who respect and follow the guidelines who are not the problem and contribute to the state's economy. It is a tricky situation. Having lived in the islands for 28 years, it is all about respect for the people, culture and land always - not just during a pandemic.

I visited both the city of Trento and Venice this year and my mom was pissed at me because I wouldn't lower my mask for photos. Because at that time you couldn't walk without a mask outside in Italy. We can now since the 11th of February. And only outside if there aren't gatherings and it's not super crowded. Aka of you can respect social distancing safely. I've been a lot of places last year and I always followed every rule. Including curfew when it was mandatory in Italy. To be honest I've never been told off for not respecting the rules. Maybe once when we had the wrong masks on the train. Because we didn't know when the new law would start. And we were travelling so we didn't know shops that had these masks.

@@Glambutfirstcoffee mask do work, especially kn95 and n95 masks. That is science. What doesn't work is how people use them. Most people treat them like a t-shirt or pair of socks. You cannot touch certain parts of a mask when donning or doffing or it makes that mask a bigger risk than help. Instead of making educational videos and teaching in schools how to properly don, wear, and doff a mask, there is nothing. So you are right that improperly wearing a mask is not only worthless but actually a risk, but as a Dental Assistant specializing in Oral Surgery and reconstruction, I can guarantee you that masks are essential in keeping a sterile field because THEY WORK.

Mahalo Mia for taking the time to look into the issues; as a Native Hawaiian It is nice to see those I consider to be "big names" taking the time to educate themselves. Currently there are so many people who live here that are concerned about the pandemic, we are a very small area (even if our islands look "big") with a very limited amount of available resources, and even more limits on how to replenish said resources when we run out. Our cases fluctuate constantly, but the amount of available medical supplies/room is very low, not to mention we also have a limited amount of medical STAFF, many of whom are beginning to burn out (or who have not had the luxury of a vacation themselves since March 2020). Many of our resources (water, land, even COVID funds from the gov) have been used for visitors and military rather than the residents, and more even the INDIGENOUS Kanaka of our island. The state's response to the pandemic has brought to the realization of many who live here that while tourism plays a HUGE part in our economy, the tourism industry has many times been put at the forefront of issues instead of others things that are important to our people (like land conservation, reinstatement of ancient Hawaiian practices, language and beliefs, LAND BACK, education, water, housing crisis, homelessness and more). It has also brought to light just how un-Hawaiian Hawai'i is becoming as more and more "outside" sources are purchasing large portions of the islands for homes, golf courses, business development, while NATIVE Hawaiians (Kanaka Maoli, Kanaka 'Oiwi) are becoming homeless (~41% of homeless persons are of Native Hawaiian decent), having to move from their family homes to more affordable states or even close their businesses that might have been in their family for generations. I know I repeated myself a little above, but a large number of people who are not Native Hawaiian (even those who live in our islands) think that each commment on the subject(s) that comes from a Native Hawaiian is just us complaining and because we "belong" to the USA, our islands are now for the use of all. Many of the Kanaka I follow on social media that are very vocal (and better educated) on these issues and more, are told to shut up and stop complaining because all our home is to them is a vacation spot. Looking through history, Native Hawaiian people have welcomed guests, we love to share the beauty that is our home, but when our home is slowly not becoming our home, that is when we need to say enough is enough. I appreciate the care that you showed our 'aina and the fact that you shared some of what you've learned with your audience. I hope future visitors will remember your words as well. If you want to learn more about our issues, what we are doing to fix them, or even just more about our culture, check out the many different Kanaka creators on tik tok. I think many use the #hawaiitiktok Let me know if you want any recommendations

thank you for the comment! I am reading and definitely listening

    • @jellyfishumbrella
      @jellyfishumbrella Před 2 lety +11

@@SM-nn7dd Of course there can be varying opinions amongst groups. I would say there is a general consensus in our community that people from outside of Hawai'i buying property is not liked or ideal. Ive heard varying degrees of the argument: some say none at all, some say its fine as long as you respect and learn the culture, some only have issues with those in foreign countries buying homes they never live in. Economically speaking, most can agree that non-natives who purchase land (mostly rich, retired military or celebrities) DO in fact drive up our costs of living and our housing market, which negatively impacts those who are Hawaiian or local to the islands; many never have the chance to become home owners because of the ungodly cost of a home here. I think it would be kind of dumb to ignore the role that tourism plays in the Hawaii economy...that doesnt mean we like it. There are those who want to completely get rid of tourism, and there are those who think that tourism is the only hope for our economy. I do think it's more of a consensus that DECREASING the amount of tourism and diversifying our economy will benefit most in the long run. SO to answer your question about visiting, it depends on the time period and the person visiting. Right now, like I mentioned before, we are having many issues with COVID cases and allocation of funds in the "state". While tourism is technically open, there are a HUGE number of people that disagree that opening now was a smart choice ESPECIALLY since many of the COVID protocols were ignored by visitors while residents received fines for the same things (i.e. large groups, mask-mandates). Not to mention the larger non-local corporations being able to be fully open, while smaller local businesses have to jump thru hoops or even close down. long story short, now would probably not be the best time, not to mention LOTS of stuff is closed or restricted so many of the things visitors want to do are unavailable to them. Maybe in the future people can come and visit, and it would be okay. I'd also like to point out that many people come in the summer and during Holiday time, which is the worst times to come in my opinion lol. Winter is hurricane season here, and summer is windy AND crowded (aka more expensive). On the topic of respect, I would urge visitors to remember that we exist outside of your vacation, people live and exist here like any other place. We're not just here to serve you (you would be surprised how entitled people are on vacation thinking everyone is going to pick up after them or give them information about a place that could easily be googled). ALSO theres SO MUCH outside of the hotel and Waikiki/North Shore/Lahaina/Kona (not saying they are bad places but ya know, theres more to see). Not only do we have a huge selection of locally-owned restaurants, we have so many beautiful historic sites, scenic views and culture to see.

Thank you for acknowledging the state of tourism in Hawaii and addressing comments you received. While it certainly isn't necessary as you were unaware of the situation, I'm glad that you did. I've seen several other people visit Hawaii over this winter who I am sure also didn't know prior to visiting about the water shortages or anything other than COVID restrictions. It's easy to miss local or regional situations/news when traveling if it doesn't apply to somewhere that you live. So in a way, your addressing it is also bringing attention to the issue for people who didn't know. This also encourages me to do more research on current events on wherever I plan to travel in the future. We should always respect the places we go because they are someone's home and community.

Thanks Mia for coming on early on the topic of tourism and Hawaii right now. I'm studying environmental justice in my graduate program and another issues besides COVID19/environmental problems is native Hawaiian land displacement. I hope you can also do some of your own research on homelessness for native Hawaiian's caused by displacement from commercial lands/resorts/tourism which was happening before COIVD19 (Hawaii used to have the largest homeless population in the U.S.). But definitely because of decline in tourism, many people don't have a source of income which has caused more homelessness and harm for native Hawaiians. Hopefully you can spread more awareness on this issue like you did in today's/donate to a charity addressing homelessness! Love you and your videos as always Mia!!!!!

I live in Italy and we have a lot of tourists that impact on places like Venice and coastal areas, but I think there is a much larger environmental problem that needs to be addressed with tourism. Thanks for bringing awareness to the issue, Mia! I think that people should travel responsibly and try to leave as small of a footprint as they can. That said, I hope you had fun in Hawaii, guys.

I’m sure others have commented this as well, but the reason why people say Hawaii doesn’t want tourism is due to the natives and locals. They do not like tourists and non natives. Not to mention that tourism is destroying Hawaii, they don’t have enough resources or clean drinking water to support tourism and while people say it brings many jobs, sadly not to the locals and natives of Hawaii. Tourism has essentially taken their land and white washed it. As much as Hawaii is beautiful and I have always dreamed of going there, I never will go there to cause more pain to these people who have asked for tourism to stop.

We have so many visitors that don't follow the rules and then find themselves in trouble and needing help. They come and disrespect our turtles and seals wanting to touch or play with them. Then you have those that like to go hiking and don't know when it is a good or insafe to hike. One rule is not to hike after it rains or rain is expected. And never ever turn you back to the ocean!

I think it's important to differentiate between the desires of Hawaiians (who are Indigenous to the land) compared to settlers, tourism businesses, and the colonial state (the USA, Americans, other migrants to Hawaii). From what I've read, just because you are from Hawaii doesn't mean you are Hawaiian.
Tourism is a huge industry in Hawaii, but who is actually in control of, profiting, and benefiting from the tourism? Typically, it's not Indigenous people / Hawaiians and tourism takes place on Hawaiian lands that were taken through colonization. I've heard very strong calls by Hawaiians that people not visit Hawaii as a tourist (which is affected by COVID-19 as well), but it's not just about being gentler in our use on the land, it's also about power, control, and profit, Indigenous sovereignty, and having relationships with the land that aren't just about how we use the land, but also respecting its sacredness as a living being unto its own.
Sustainable tourism that is led by Indigenous peoples is possible, but it takes research to stay in accommodations, eat food, and take part in activities that Hawaiians think is okay for tourists to have access to and where the economic benefit actually goes to Indigenous peoples, instead of the non-Indigenous people and corporations.

There is nothing wrong with listening to indigenous people’s wishes though. That doesn’t mean it needs to taint memories and I don’t think she will let it, but it’s still important to talk about and acknowledge these people’s wishes and what we’ve done to disrespect those, even when done unintentionally.
