One day during my trip to Mombasa, Kenya, I had a chance to hang out with Chef Ali Mandhry, a local from Mombasa, host of a variety of tv shows, writer, and an all around amazing guy to hang out with and eat with!
We first stopped off at Mama mbaazi, a lady who sells Mombasa style pigeon peas in coconut milk to be eaten with mahamri. We saved it for later when we returned to the house, but it was excellent, and amazing combination.
We then continued on to the main market in downtown Mombasa, a bustling fruits and vegetables market, full of friendly vendors, and all the ingredients you need to cook Kenyan Swahili food - which is a mix of Arabian, Indian, and local dishes. The main dish that we bought all the ingredients for was to cook a dish called samaki wa kupaka (grilled fish with coconut sauce). The fish was grilled first, then Chef Ali cooked a coconut milk sauce with garlic, curry powder and lime juice to baste onto the grilled fish. It was sensational.
Azad Ice Cream Shop - First, before getting back to the house to start cooking, we stopped for a classic Mombasa faluda.
The entire meal Chef Ali and Fiza cooked was incredible. I especially enjoyed the Swahili grilled fish and the rice pilau.
Huge thank you to Chef Ali Mandhry for this amazing day of Swahili Kenyan food in Mombasa, Kenya! Again, check out Chef Ali’s channel ( / chefalisaidmandhry ) and Instagram ( / chefalimandhry .

Hi Chef. I went to your channel in search of the recipe for ndizi za mkono wa tembo. Can I find it somewhere? I would appreciate it. Good job and keep blessing us with recipes.👌🏽👍🏾🇰🇪❤️💃🏾💃🏾
Alright so i had to comment one more time, to say to all my fellow Kenyans that after seeing this video i would like to tell that we have a lot of similarities. 1. Our accent is same. 2. Mombasa looks exactly like Karachi, Pakistan 3. We also have Falooda and call it the same. 4. We also called Achar like your Achari. 5. We have same fruits and vegetables 6. We have same markets 6. We also have a similar rice dish called Pulao. Its amazing. And i have only gone to 60% of video. WOW. If you are a Kenyan and you are coming to Pakistan, be my guest. :)
Muhammad Awais yes it does.
Be my guest whenever you plan to visit Pakistan. I will afford your travel and stay in Lahore. :)
Chef Ali Mandhry and looking a fellow مسلم. I subscribed immediately. You have a wonderful personality. Love your work
Thank you Moh’D

Glad you mentioned that. Wouldn't it be nice if blacks are treated and respected the same way in your Country.
Victoria Tongun ofcourse it would be.His love for Africa doesn’t mean he doesn’t recognise the racism rife everywhere nor is he a spokesperson for a nation just as you don’t have to speak on the crimes common in your country.Cut him some slack.
Who Else Automatically gets Fat from watching while Mark Wien here looking like a Model and enjoying all the Yummy yummy dishes?😂😂😂🤣🤣

Similar streets especially after watching The Extraction 😉
It's quite impressive how Mark picks up language. Great pronunciation.
Minority Nomad I believe he grew up in Kenya.
Grew up in Kenya
You can read his mini autobiography on his website. He has lived in five or six countries, most of them with entirely different languages that he learned during his time there.
true
I agree. He's got a great ear for other languages.
I think Chef Ali is my favorite guest so far! And there are so many that I love! But he’s the best! 🤗
Branky Ma thank you
Chef Ali Mandhry you are so welcome! I am so glad Mark featured you! I had never heard of you! But your genuine enthusiasm permeates and is very catching! I am subbing to you and your channel! I look forward to getting to know you and your cooking style. Blessings
Hello Branky ma
I love how well you're pronouncing the Swahili words
Chef Ali is filled with so much life and vibrancy, like he doesn’t have a single worry in the world. He is literally living his best life.
Rivy O amen
Oh, wow! Mombasa Kenya is surprisingly AWESOME! I love how the city became a melting pot of cultures! It's like in one street you're in India, the next street you are in UAE, the next street you're like in southeast asia! Amazing! I also love how humble Mark Wiens is. I wonder how it feels like when you meet people for the first time but knows him like distant relative :)
Hey Mark, you should consider inviting Chef Ali to Thailand. I think it'll be fun to see his reactions to your favourite Thai dishes.
Feeling proud to be Kenyan. To be African means fresh food
Kenya one of my favorite countries in the world..beautiful landscape and the ocean :)
Are you watching the video while you are reading the comments
Abdelkadir Muktar yes.

No. Always read the comment after finish watching the video
What do you think …..

So friendly People Here in Kenya Mombasa so happiest country also culture is great I'm indian but I love this peaceful culture so Kenya Allah bless you
Mustakali Shaikh Notice how Indians and Arabs are treated so well in African nations yet Africans are treated worse than dogs in India and Arabia.
Neg Ste. Lucie please don’t tell like that . Not all The people!! I am an Indian I have met many Africans and I respect them!!
but most of you are racist!
Bless you too
Thankyou. but alot of indians are racists and rude.
Our version of pilau in Trinidad is "pelau"
This is very educational to know how different cultures intertwine and is dispersed through the world😊
Thanks. From Kenya here
Thanks you much love from Kenya
🇹🇹
It's so wild that life expectancy can be threatened by something extreme, but the food reveals that their health is going to be better than ours in the States. We get so addicted to preservatives and unsafe sugars and they have food. Just the food. No worries of preservatives. This is such a good cultural lesson. I love watching Mark Wiens vids.
Chef Ali has such a great personality!
HeresJani • Thank you so much ❤️
Yes he does...I love it!! I just subbed to his channel - BRAVO CHEF ALI! 😊
i love you
This dude Ali seems like a fun person to hang out with.

I totally agree
I am proud to be Kenyan.... Thank you Mark Weins for a job well done. Welcome back and this also goes out to everyone else who wants to experience our culture, diversity, food, wildlife and most of all the hospitality of the Kenyan people.
Chef Ali is so passionate about food, even his hair looks like noodles

You guys have got me salivating
This guy smiles even when he's not smiling
Really
I'm so thankful I get to experience places that I'd never see otherwise through your videos, Mark! I love your content :)
Skevi S hello
Urmh that's sad..
Mohammed Ali I'm sure many people manage to live fulfilling lives without getting to visit China, India or Africa but thank you for your concern
Skevi S I agree, and maybe you should go there yourself and see for yourself. However, you just have to be careful, any country is dangerous, but not all people are bad. The media just wants to air things negatively, but don't believe in the hype. :-)
love you too
Not even halfway through the video and I already miss Mombasa... Love being a Kenyan
We're it not for covid 19 I ft like jumping to the next bus, as much as there is Swahili food in Nairobi you can't match it up with what you get in Mombasa
Then go back. There's no place like home.
I ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Kenya 🇰🇪
Mark is probably the only CZcamsr that I’ve come across that doesn’t fill his videos with heaps of ads!! Anyone else noticed that? 🤣🤣 awesome!!
Hey Kenyans, you look and sound exactly like Pakistanis, i am so surprised by that. Love from Pakistani
And you are also breaking the stereotypes that Africans are all hand to mouth. Looking at the cars and phones, i can say financially we are also alike. :P

it's so overwhelming... Proud to be an African
I've been repeating the same video everytime im about to go to sleep. This is by far Mark's most underrated work. This video is so vibrant and cheerful. Love the vibe.
The food has so much of Indian influence. Just amazing..
Syed Qayyum That's because many thousands of Indian immigrants settled in Kenya. They did not have to deal with the racism that Black Africans gave to face in India every day. They were allowed to earn a living, open businesses and make money. They were not harrassed and molested, not beaten and ostracized. It only Indians could be as magnanimous to Black Africans in India.
The Swahili culture is a mixture of African, Hindi, English, Portuguese, Arabic... You will notice the blend in the video in speach, spices, cooking and eating style. The chef is a Swahili by tribe... also a mixture of race.
@@NegSteLucie true...

Oh yes, Mombasa and the Swahili coast stretching from Somalia to south of Dar es Salaam has some of the best cuisines in the world. Its also an old, old place going back to the ages of the spice trade in the Indian Ocean. I love the old town of Mombasa, it has classical character and multicultural vibe. Love the Swahili Pillao - in fact I will get the spice mix recipe and make it at home.
