  • How to start a webcomic - Comparing the major webcomic PLATFORMS //
    VIDEO
    In this video we will be comparing the major webcomic platforms. When you start a webcomic, this is one of the first things to think about. Because what platform you chooses influences what format you use, what size, etc. Weather you publish your webcomic on LINE webtoon, Tapas (Tapastic), Wordpress, Patreon or even social media, makes a lot of difference. But what is the best platform to post on? Find out what will work the best for you in this week's video.

    Yeah, these platforms can make you feel less like an artist and more like a content creator if that makes sense. I'm also afraid of my story not being completely mine, I don't want it branded with some big company name and be unable to move it somewhere else, and having to follow an ever-changing terms of service is a little scary

      @pencilsandstories  Před 3 lety +2

      @@pencilsandstories I was thinking Webtoons, since Tapas is a little bit shady. I like the feeling of community on Tapas, but the site seems very commercial with all of the weird ads and the tips that don't give the creator as much as it should, so I trust Webtoons just a little more

    I’ve since making the video found out that Webtoons also has an ad revenue program. It was a bit hidden under the regular account. (Not the “publish” section) and that’s where you can find the Patreon integration, as well.

    • @pencilsandstories
      @pencilsandstories  Před rokem +1

      Spam is so annoying! I use a plugin on my Wordpress website that filters comments. Sometimes a legit comment falls through the net but it keeps all the spam in a nice list so you can look if there’s any real comments in there.

    @HolyShield Před 2 lety +2

    Thank you for making these videos! I find them very helpful! I was also wondering if you could start in somewhere like webtoons that has a bigger audience, post like a first season/vol or something and then put a reference to your own plataform for people that wants to continue reading the rest? Or is it something that is not allow on those plataforms?

    • @pencilsandstories
      @pencilsandstories  Před 2 lety +1

      I can’t think of a reason where that’s not allowed. I also did that myself for my comic as I didn’t have the time to convert my pages into vertical format anymore. The only issue with Webtoons is that outbound links are not possible. So people have to manually type in the URL. And it’s hard to get people off of Webtoon in the first place, so your best bet for promotion is still social media and such.

      Thanks so much for watching! I’m not familiar with Krita, but if it has the same tools, like I mention in my video (2 videos ago) that Photoshop has, I’m sure it can be used in the same way! :) There’s also an elaborate comic tutorial about making comics in Krita out there by David Revoy.

    This information is very helpful. I have a WordPress website already. I was trying to figure out where I would put everything. I keep trying to figure out what I will call it because it's not exactly a webcomic. It's like a webstory but made with some comic icons. It's completely different and I have never seen anything like it online.

      If you can find your own unique word that would make it clear what it is you can really use that in your marketing as a unique point. Is it a combination of prose and imagery?

    Do you have any experience with other third party publishers such as Hiveworks? Are there other options?
    I also recognize that your story is rather family friendly-esque. While I'm not writing anything pornographic my stories tend to be uh... well, the focus is usually on relationships with some other darkish themes, so the content really isn't intended for younger audiences. Tapas, Webtoon, Facebook, Tumblr, instagram... all of those options are virtually off the table and I'm really not sure what my options are, if any.
    I know Stjepan Sejic uploaded Sunstone anonymously on an anime porn website because he was worried about how people would receive it - even though there really isn't any blatant sex and the story focuses on the relationship between the two protagonists - but I am also not Stjepan, who is a known and popularized entity, and when he eventually moved Sunstone out of the shadows to publish on deviantart ((under a pseudonym, even)) we have to acknowledge that he kind of has the protection of position backing him.
    I guess what I'm asking is if you know where more intended-for-adults-but-not-porn content might be posted online, or if I'm going to have to resign myself to taking on hosting this myself? I work 80 hours a week already so another job is just daunting to think about. XD

    • @pencilsandstories
      @pencilsandstories  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Mu, I guess it really depends on how far your story goes and how you would describe your comic. I don’t know the exact ToS for Webtoon, atm, but I do know that some comics feature more adult themes.
      I know DeviantART has NSFW filters you can put on your content so I assume they will not take content down very quickly. If you’re interested in joining communities where you need to be accepted first, like Hiveworks or Spiderforest then you can always send them an email with some more details of the kinds of situations your comic features.
      Good luck!

    But how can we build an email list for comics, if we’re posting our comic on third-party platforms? 12:31

    • @pencilsandstories
      @pencilsandstories  Před rokem

      Have your signup form linked to a really easy to remember url and just post it in text on Webtoons or other places that don’t allow links. Make sure you have a free goodie that your readers want to make them type it in. Promote it regularly on your socials with a link and if you’re talking to someone who shows interest, ask them if you can add them to your list. (Save a screenshot that they gave you permission to do so) You can also have some cool cards to hand out when you’re at comic/art events with your email list sign up url on there.
