    My boss from my younger days working at IH truck dealership pounded in my head that you never walk away from nuts and bolts unfinished, that being torqued, wired or pinned make sure it's done before leaving I've taught that to my grandsons with one being a master tech at a GM dealership. I'd definitely be calling the dealership where you got the truck they should stand behind there word. Best of Luck guys and stay safe.👍🇺🇸🙏

    there was a series of campaigns to replace the pumps for the very reason you're explaining. Cummins had too many very expensive failures and were legislated to change all the pumps. they were done in batches based on serial number of engine. At least that's what they told us up here in Canada.

    Get a mechanic(certified) to inspect the engine and verify you diagnosis, that the rebuild
    was done improperly. Ask cummins legal dept for a claim form. Then submit your
    claim to their legal dept and send a letter of compliant to the president of cummins, the dealer, and the rebuilder. Then if cummins will not pay. Take them to small claims court. You will win the cost of rebuilding again or cummins by accept your claim and rebuild the engine again.

All Cummins dealerships nationwide that are accredited for such services should address and rectify the issue without hesitation. It's imperative for the industry to prioritize reputable and skilled service providers over those that don't adhere to the highest standards. Man I certainly hope, since it was rebuilt at a Cummins shop, there's warranty. You certainly have video proof of faulty labor. Contact your Cummins dealer, ask to speak with the regional representative. Ask for him to come to you, show him everything, including the video and Cummins should pick up the tab.
    I had an issue with my then 2012 Cummins pumping oil into the DPF system, causing multiple regens, which led to check engine lights. Turned out, Cummins had an issue with valve seats leaking. Had to buy a new head but Cummins did reimburse 90% after talking with the regional representative.
    Good luck with this. You may also want to remind the Cummins representative about the following you have on CZcams. It may just light a fire under his ass to do the right thing. 😊

    We may never know the full situation, but FYI, buddy worked at a shop and for 8 hours a day he ran engines on a dyno, his job was to have a good working engine and make it blow up, total stress test, most engines that he took apart that blew would have loose rod bolts, not from someone not tightening the bolts, but from the bolts stretching under extreme conditions, these engines should never see those extreme punishment, best of luck guys

      With the amount of scoring, on the #3 to 4 throw cheek, I give it less than 1% chance of being saved. Just too much damage, also with the amount of metal that was circulating, pull the motor, out of frame, as the block and oil cooler and any part the motor oil came in contact with has to be thoroughly cleaned, or Martin will be doing another rebuild in 6 months. If the load situation was better, a new engine would be the best option, but with tight money, out of frame rebuild or reman, is in the cards.
      It hurts soo much.
      Best wishes from the far North.

    I once was in the process of buying a machine shop. They would grind down a crankshaft
    then reinstall with oversize bearings. (The right way to rebuild the engine).
    A shortcut(if its only one cylender) maybe just polish. That machine shop also made tools and dies for the wire and cable making industry. EVERY PART THEY MADE had to be
    polished to remove burs and imperfections.
    you maybe able to use a polishing compound and a buffer(machine shop supply houses).
    To fine polish(mirror finish) the jewelry suppliers make very fine polishing cloths and compounds. good luck(I would replace all the bearings on that shaft.) Jewelry suppliers
    are called findings in nyc.

    I’d find the Cummins shop & talk to them about this. Worth a try. Too late now but why didn’t you still have bought the extended warranty for the engine??

    Your first instinct of the bolts not being torqued is logical. More than likely what happened is the bearing overheated, heating the whole area and causing the bolts to stretch exasperating the situation, then cooled, now with stretched bolts, thus leaving the bolts finger tight. Airplane engines have specs of bolt length, and tighten until the stretched length is a certain length longer than original bolt. Torque wrench not required. Heat causes some strange things to happen. If the bolts were never tightened, they would have worked their way out in a very short time. I had an air cooled engine that over heated, needed no wrench to remove cylinders or to split the case. All the bolts/studs had stretched when the engine over heated.

    • @TruckingTogether
      @TruckingTogether  Před 10 měsíci

      I’m sure they’d stretched a bit, not sure how hot it got but I don’t see any discoloring on the rod or crank from heat, this is a common thing with the fractured rods.

    • @anthonyblackwell2059
      @anthonyblackwell2059 Před 10 měsíci

      Just a question. The heating theory sounds logical. Could they have not been tight because the bearing had basically disintegrated so there was no longer anything to be tight against. Or do those caps meet each other and tighten up against each other to torque? Just wondering. Either way, sorry this happened to you guys.

    The bearing is definitely toast, likely taking the crank with it. All due to a incompetent mechanic. Agreed. However, that still does not address the fuel smell in the oil. Did the fuel dilute the oil which exacerbated the loose rod bolt/bad tolerance on the bearing?
    While you are in there you still need to look at that pump...

    How it going Alice an Martin , For sure these new engines you have to check the rods and mains about 400,000 , 650 to 7 00,000 you better roll rods , and maines in them , or there going to spin a bearing, Back in the day with the old school Cummins we checked them about every 100,000 miles , My self I would not buy another engine or a new engine to put in it , I would pull the engine out of the truck Strip it down , and I would take the block to B and R in West Sacramento you know who they are , I have been using them for decades they do really precise work , and then I would put it back together , I would have all the liners checked precise , I think these new engines are set at 12,000 from the top of the block , The way I done it , I set them at 15 thousands up from the block , Because that is a lot of problems with these new engines the liners are setting too low , and we call it / it sucks a liner and then the piston goes bad , and i would have the head redone and Surface , That is when you want to put titanium valves, and good valve guides , I know this because , I built one about 4 years ago, and everything worked great for me , Back then I was all done with the engine , and I put everything brand new , brand new fly wheel and clutch pressure plate , and I cleaned everything up underneath the hood and I painted everything she really look nice when I was done , I have had right around $38,000 bucks wrapped into it , and she run excellent , and my 2014 Peterbilt, I mentioned it before I got out of trucking , When I sold her She had 575,000 on everything I done , I told the mann that bought the truck to drop the Pan and check the rods and Mains , He called me back , and he said them rods and maines look 90% good with that kind of miles on them I guess I was just lucky my friend , But it is all up to you Alice and Martin It is your trucking company , You together have to decide what you want to do , and I know they got warranties on new engines , but they always try to fuk you on them or blame it on the driver , or you did not maintenance it right , and If you did decide to do it yourself , you have to buy the proper tools to do the job correct and precise , My friend down in Florida he finally bought his tools and started working on his own truck , and engine and he's doing a very good job for the first time , Shops have burnt him over so many times it was pathetic , But normally when you are a owner operator you have to work on your own trucks , and I know you are smart Martin and you are mechanical incline , Things that you do not know you ask somebody That does., and they will tell you and show you , and get yourself a book for the engine , Myself l learn working on diesel engines was a lot easier than working on car engines , One more thing the reason why these guys have problems with their engines from a shop , That is because , one mann is not working on the engine , One mann will do this , 1 mann will put the pistons in 1 mann will put the heads on and so forth , You do not know what they are doing to the engine , and that is why there is problems with them , constantly every single day they get a 100000 miles maybe or a 150000 miles and they got problems my friend ,
    Good luck my friends , be safe and family

At least you could get something for your trouble and they could watch for further problems and correct them. Glad Martin us so expert in repairing the trucks and know just what is wrong. Hope it all works out for you.

    I gotta say, Martin should have PHD behind his name. He would make a very good diesal mechanic teacher. Something I allways pick up on with the awesome relationship Martin and Beth have with each other. I have seen people woking on stuff like this and on edge most of the time. It might seem like a little thing to most people but when Martin had beth crank on the engie which Beth couldn't see what was going on and Martin had her do it again and then he said"perfect".Under the circumstances and what the cards they have been dealt of lately, they will make it because of the relationship they have. Sorry about the long comment, but felt like it needed to be pointed out. By the way Beth, you should name your truck, "Snazzy B.

    Been there done that gone through about 5 ISX engines in 10 years all the way from the 870 2250 and 2230 I will never purchase another one.....
    Not only do they have no mechanical failures that continue to plague the ISX lineup but they are a pain in the ass to rebuild and require a lot of time and special tools And just buying a used one is a huge gamble At least when it comes to an ISX.
