Sell My Tractor or Trade It? It Has an Issue!

  • Got a viewer e-mail from Doug who has a 1987 Ford 3910 4wd with an issue. Here's what he writes: "Finding the four wheel drive parts for this tractor is nearly impossible. The front wheel bearings went out and damaged the spindles. I could not find new spindles so they were taken to a machine shop and repaired. The oil seals lasted about 4 months and started leaking again. I want to replace this tractor because of the on going problems and the difficulty finding parts. Im trying to decide if i should sell this tractor privately or trade in for a new tractor. I feel like I can get more from a private sale. I have bought equipment that had hidden underlying issues. I don't want to sell it to someone and put them in the same situation I am in right now. If I trade it in to a dealer, and they resell it and the buyer runs into all these problems I am concerned it will effect my relationship with the dealer. I plan to fully disclose all problems with the tractor. What are your thoughts on this?
First, this is not an uncommon problem with a 3910-4wd. Here's a forum that documents an extensive repair (it's five pages) that probably worked: www.tractorbynet.com/forums/t.... So the problem can be repaired, maybe not permanently because it sounds like a design flaw, but good enough for the tractor to be productive.
Having said that, a 3910-4wd is a very desirable tractor, there's a lot you can do with a tractor that size, especially if it has a front end loader. I would highly recommend disclosing the issue when trading, I don't think it will impact the trade allowance much, especially if the rest of the tractor is in good shape. There's a huge demand for used tractors in the 35-70 hp range with 4wd and they're really hard to find. A dealer, especially a New Holland dealer, will recognize the value of that tractor and want to trade. Hopefully, they'll have someone in the shop who can repair the oil leak easily. It won't stay on their lot long.
Most of the time, if you sell the tractor outright, you'll get more money. A dealer is going to try to put wholesale value in it, then sell it for retail. If you can cut them out and sell for retail, you'll usually come out ahead, but you'll have people coming on your property to look at the tractor who might return later to steal stuff. That's always a risk.
Sometimes, the amount the dealer will put in a used piece gets really close to retail. That's usually when there's way too much used inventory, and a dealer just wants to have something on their lot with less value than a new tractor to save interest cost. It can also be when a manufacturer is pounding a dealer to get market share, a practice that is not uncommon.
When I was in the dealership world I really appreciated the customers who would be honest with me about the condition of the trade. I tried to take the best care of them. The customer who would trade a tractor with a major issue and either not disclose it, or lie about it, I remembered.
If you're shopping for a used tractor, I have a couple of pieces of advice. First, always ask if there's anything wrong with the tractor and watch the body language of the person trying to sell it to you. You can generally tell when someone is lying to you.
Also, I always looked at the condition of the property where the tractor was kept as a big indication of how well it was maintained. Customers with perfect estates that are clean and well-groomed, tend to take good care of their tractors. Those with trash and a dead cow and trash in the front yard probably never service their equipment. Assess values with that in mind.
If I were in Doug's situation, I'd trade the 3910 in, tell the dealer about the front axle issue, and try to negotiate the best deal I could. He's the type of customer that I enjoyed dealing with when I was in the dealership world and tried my best to give outstanding service to.

That trade-in comment about your car made me laugh. I once traded a car so bad the salesman said he was going to drive it around the building to check it out. I said, "Good Luck".

The first new car I bought (in 1980) the salesman offered me $300 for my trade and $500 if I didn't trade it in!! LOL!

I have been watching you forever, I really enjoy your information. I used to have a tractor just like yours, I traded it in so I could have a cab. The old tractor was so much stronger than this new one which is a 2017 New Holland 47hp with cab and loader. I also liked the old had the high low on the loader stick. Next I didn't even think about a third function. I am a dedicated Blue tractor owner ,but I am seeing all these other tractors coming out and it just blows my mind. What tractor do you prefer since you have been in the business.

I’ve been really surprised selling equipment with issues. I always end up with a private sale “oh yea no big deal I can fix that”. Really effects price way less than you think

Most of these problem tractors end up on the auction block, either the owner will take it there or the dealer. Also, the dealer should know about any known problems to any particular model.

A 3910 is a nice tractor. If I were him I’d keep it and fix it or live with it. I’ve run a 2WD 3910 that a friend had. Real solid machine. 4wd is better in my area, so that tractor would be even more desirable. I drive cars into the ground too. I have the same philosophy with the tractor. A major engine or transmission problem could get me to move on, but at that point the machine would only be good for parts anyway.

Don't trade it. Fix it. You can buy metric oil seals in any size. I'm betting if the hub and spindle are true, then a better fit seal will fix it.
I was just checking on Mahindra, and their prices have finally jumped up 20%. Not a good economy to be trading in. If anything, wait until these high prices are put on sale due to slow volume...to trade.
