Love seeing you posting new videos again!
Shadowrun for either the SNES or the Genesis was amazing. Both entirely different games, but both equally good in different ways. Blew my tiny little mind back in the day.
1000%
Love them both, but I prefer the Genesis version. I think the top down action RPG that is the Genesis version is a little better than the isometrical point and click RPG that is the SNES version, but you can't go wrong with either.
I love this game! It helped solidify my love of RPGs as a kid! Also the paperback book "Never Deal with a Dragon" shares many storyline elements with this.
That’s not accidental. Jake was definitely intended to be a POV character early on, and his similarities to a certain Mr. Case are also intended. Every version they could provide of him was meant as a way in. Either way, watch your back and shoot straight, omae - you already know rule #3.
spent so many hours playing this as a kid. loved every second of it.
Back in the day this one was easier to rent from Blockbuster than to find at the store. I rented this so many times and years later bought the rental copy. Love this game.
I LIVED for this game when I was in my teens. Such a cool experience. To go full geek, I even tried to write a screenplay based on it, but this "Johnny Mnemonic"s and "The Matrix"s kinda beat me to the punch. Either way, incredible game. One of my all-time favorites.
I don't know how well an adaptation of an adaptation would go over.
This is an adaptation of the novel Never Deal With A Dragon.
Definitely in my top 3 SNES games as a kid. This game was mindblowing when it came out...the dark futuristic setting, hiring bodyguards, the supernatual stuff with vampires and orcs and such mixed with upgrading yourself with tech.
Not to mention shaking your head some years later when The Matrix movie came out lol. Then trying to explain to people "But there was this game where people would plug their heads into a computer and enter a thing called the matrix a few years ago!"
I still have this SNES game, I still play it, and I still love it. :)
I was really hooked on this. The idea of hacking into an antagonist's account and pilfering funds while opening doors and taking crucial information.
good pick, thanks for covering this. I really advise checking out the genesis shadowrun, and theres some remixed tracks in shadowrun returns from the SNES game. Finally, Shadowrun: Dragonfall is a must play if you haven't yet. Probably one of the best rpgs I've played.
I love this game. My best friend as a kid got it when it was brand new. We actually loved RPGs back in the dark ages before Final Fantasy 7 when everyone suddenly loved them. Of course we'd only played what few as kids we could get: Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy 1 and 2, Dungeons and Dragons on Genesis and that was probably it. My friend called me to come over as soon as he got back home with it. I ran down the street to his place and we popped it in. It blew our minds. A Sci-fi and fantasy RPG?! We didn't know that was even a thing. We took turns playing almost nonstop that entire weekend until we beat it. Good times.
I'm a Sega guy mostly for that generation and don't own very many SNES games but Shadowrun is definitely among them. And the Genesis version as well. I only paid something like $10-$20 CIB each. I've seen what they go for now and I'm really glad I got them when I did. Not for everyone, but I've played it so much since it came out that I honestly find myself humming the music to this game to this day.
I loved this game when it rust came out. I never beat it back in the 90s but I recently played it on an emulator and beat it.
It’s really fun and has a cool atmosphere. If you like 16 bit games give it a try.
The good old SNESDrunk phrase “gotta play it anywhere you can“ 😄
Great review as always! The way you review these games makes me really want to play them. Shadowrun looks really cool, reminds me a bit of Syndicate which I couldn't get into as a kid.
I'd love to see you go through all the other Shadow run games video games there a pretty fascinating part of gaming history
This video was really great! This game blew me away with its world and story, and it's always a treat to see someone cover it. I love both the 16-Bit Shadowrun games, and I can only temper my patience and wait for you to cover Shadowrun on the Genesis at some point.
One of my favorite SNES games played this many times over the years. I liked the Genesis one too, but I think the SNES one was much better overall but the hacking\decking part was better on the Genesis imo.
the "mysterious dog" is technically not a dog, she's a kitsune, a fox spirit from Japanese folk lore. If I remember right you can even get her to join your party later in the game, she's also quite lewd in the Japanese version 😜
That also leads into another interesting thing, as, from my understanding at least, the game was actually primarily made for the Japanese market, as the Shadowrun table top RPG was quite popular over there, there is some content that was either cut or censored in the western release that is in the Japanese version. It's also entirely in English with Japanese subtitles that run across the bottom of the screen, which feels even more cyberpunk to me, so it's entirely playable to people that do not know Japanese but do know English. Also it has what I consider to be a better control scheme, letting you use the left and right shoulder buttons as trigger buttons. This also might explain the lighter tone compared the the Genesis game, as my understanding is that the tone is much lighter in the Japanese rule books.
There is nothing better than waking up and having your morning coffee and breakfast while watching some FNA. Thanks for the hardwork here Aaron. I have always wanted to play this and never did. Have a great weekend bud!
loving the Orc with a shotgun at 2:08 , someone needs to make a movie based off this series....
This was the 1st game that I beat. I rented it all the time then eventually purchased it. I even used the Nintendo Counselors help. I still think it’s a blast to play.
6:27 somebody's been watching SNESDrunk eh?
If I remember right The Wachowskis even said that they got the name The Matrix from Shadowrun.
So glad to have you posting steady content again!
One of the best games on the SNES. I played it to completion many times the "normal" way, but when I worked out the matchbox (waaay later), the game opened right up. If you get lucky when fighting Drake at the end, you CAN defeat him without using the Jester Spirit. It's almost a sci-fi version of Zelda. Awesome!!
I love Shadowrun on SNES but I will certainly admit Shadowrun on Genesis is far more faithful to the source material as far as look and mechanics.
Also Shadowrun cemented my love for Nintendo. I actually did find the game to rent but because of that had no instruction manual. So when I was in the matrix I had no idea what to do. I then did what I always did when stuck, called Nintendo’s game counselor line. But the counselor I spoke to had no idea either. However he did take my number down and promised to do some research. A short time later he called me back, told me how to interact with the nodes and what they were for, and I went on to finish the game. But the fact that Nintendo had a game counselor call me back because he didn’t have the answer right away really made me appreciate their customer service even as a young teen.
Considering how much you/ your parents were paying for it, I'd definitely want good service.
I never played this one, but I was aware of it's existence because I played the original pen and paper tabletop version. The original company that made the tabletop version, FASA, also made another couple of series of tabletop games called BattleTech and MechWarrior, both of which also made their ways onto sixteen bit hardware and I recommend you give 'em a whirl when you get a chance. Thanks for the great video and stay safe out there!
Loved the review man, great work!
I have been wanting to dive in this one for a while. Glad you picked this!
I got together with some work friends to play the pen and paper version back in the day. All I remember is that it took so long to roll our characters, that we got bored after just an hour of playtime.
Character creation has always been a weakness of Shadowrun.
Wonderful review. This was the game that introduced me to the cyberpunk sub-genre as a kid.
The biggest issue I’ve always had with this game was the lack of mouse support. If they could have supported the SNES Mouse, it would be a bona fide classic of the point and click genre, not just for us old deckers needing our Matrix hit.
I always enjoyed the soundtrack in this game.
Dang I found you too late! Hope you haven't ended the channel. Really enjoying your looks at all these different games, i'm watching a video every day. Sláinte to you mate 💚
Not dead :) - ... still working on videos, but life has happened a lot the last few months. Stay tuned and thanks for checking out the show!
I always remember ur name bcuz my name is Aaron also, and im also from Indiana, right across from Louisville, KY. Ive watched ur videos many times, they give me the dose of comfort and nostalgia i seem to need more and more as i get older. Video games make me happy, but especially from the 90s. I wish u would return to making them, and maybe u will. Ill be here to watch if u do. Thank u man.
When I first played this, I really wanted to like it, but once I got to a certain point, the combat was just too clunky for me to deal with. HOWEVER, just a month or so ago, they released a hack that lets you use the SNES mouse with it. Granted, that has its own learning curve, but it's much quicker and more intuitive than the original controls, from what I've played; definitely worth looking into, especially if you're used to the excellent rereboot trilogy (Returns/Dragonfall/Hong Kong). I'm pretty excited to spend more time with this, because Shadowrun has such a fascinating world.
has this on the genesis, it was a blast, the hacking in game really was fun.
Very different games though. Very odd how different the two became. Both were good though, but the SNES game is one of the best ever made. Both I think inspired the newer PC counterparts, which make for some incredible gameplay as well.
In Shadowrun Returns you can actually meet the protagonist of this game. Apparently he's developed a habit of sleeping in Morgue drawers because its cheaper then a hotel.
This channel is very underrated keep up the great work!
Loved this and the Genesis one. My favorite universe ever. Introduced me to cyberpunk
I got two carts of this gem. The quickest rpg but so unique for its time. The term “cyberdeck” is harder to hear and it can jam you up for a long time if not careful.
You pick the best games to cover! I'm always excited to click on your videos
The company that produced this game also produced Nightshade on NES which was an absolutely amazing superhero action/adventure game. Had lots of witty dialogue and great graphics. A must own.
If it was in my local mall, toys r us, or rental store I knew about it, but somehow I missed this game. The cover looks familiar though. Damn, wish I would have played it back in the day.
Thins game sounds awesome, thank you for reviewing it!
I am longing for the glorious day when I turn on my Switch and see that there has been an update to both the SNES and Genesis collections of NSO; and I log in and it's both versions of Shadowrun 🙏🏻
Did Friday Night Arcade just cover one of my favorite SNES games that I never beat? Yes. Yes he did.
The genesis version stick much closer to the actual Shadowrun tabletop rules so I prefer that one but this version was still great and I enjoyed it quite a lot.
Man I Loved this game as a kid. Good times.
The 20-year-old me was not a big fan of western-made RPGs, but this one really grabbed me.
This was one of my favs on SNES. My only problem with it is that part in the junkyard where you have to grind to get the better gun.
I hope you still plan to review the Sega version.
The non-linear gameplay and Matrix interface really set the Genesis version apart.
Nightshade was a hilarious puzzle adventure. Very underrated.
Thank you for sharing this hidden gem! Will definitely give it a try.
Seattle can be a real scary place
One of my favorite games.
I played around with the ROM of this one once upon a time I might need to revisit it! (because these days it's either that or a repro, from a quick google search anyway) I *did* play through all three of the newer shadowrun games to completion, so if you want more stuff at least somewhat similar to the old SNES game, highly recommended! (the protagonist from SNES SR even makes a guest appearance in shadowrun returns as a brief party member!)
Got really vague memories of renting this from Blockbuster. Funny thing is I had played through point and click adventure games on the Amiga so I was well versed in tedious "click through literally every possible option to figure out the puzzle" mechanics of the time. However this game was just too grindy to do this without a mouse, even a little quality of life would have gone a long way to avoid cycling through conversation menus. Kid me ran out of patience and gave up. The dark violent cyberpunk atmosphere was incredibly exciting though, even if the graphics were simple, had never seen anything like it except for Flashback and Beneath a Steel Sky.
Funny enough, despite the fact that the system is pretty complex, Shadowrun was the first tabletop RPG I ever played. LOVED the SNES game though, one of my all time favorites.
You know it’s a going to be a good weekend with A new FNA!!!!
I got your email Zach... Stay tuned! Thanks for the suggestion! :)
Also fyi my new email is aaron@fridaynightarcade.com
Cool thanks 👍
Tried to send you a email not sure if it went through saying failure to send
@@zachmcclintock7431 that's weird... I never got it. It's aaron@fridaynightarcade.com
Absolutely love this game was my only real computer type game experience as a kid
I bought a complete copy including the poster for about $150 a few years back.
I've never played this game, but I saw the previews the same way you did during its time period release...through magazines. lol
Still very awesome concept for game! Thanks for your time.
Great game. Very clear memories of hours spent enjoying the story amd soundtrack. Haven't played it in years but am sure it still rocks.
SR on the Genesis/Megadrive is a different beast but still fun and worth a play
I got stuck on the Bremerton ship
Great video!
I actually bought one of the Shadowrun games a long time ago. Plus a few on Steam. But that's another story.
Shadow run is one of my favorite snes rpgs. It is a bit on the clunky side but there's nothing else like it and it has a great story.
I love this game! 1st game that made me addicted to RPG games.
I love both but Genesis Shadowrun I can play forever.
Personally rented that game a lot as a kid, got it on my snes mini. First thing i did when i got it. Also been a long time fan of the ttRPG.
Most underrated video game of all time! LOVE this game!
Shadowrun is a great game. I love the world of Shadowrun. I like to thank it for my interest into the cyberpunk genre. The Genesis version is great too.
Thanks FNA, appreciate the upload. I always wondered if this one was worth a buy as it was priced high in my Funco Land mailer...now I know why. Limited sales/limited run. Buuuuuuut after this review I wish I'd taken the plunge on it. Anyhow, thanks again for the upload, great to have you back!
i played it as a kid it was awesome what a story
Love this game, and adore the soundtrack.
This one has been on my "to play" list for a long time but as you say it's rather pricey
Both the SNES and Genesis versions were top 20 games on their respective consoles.
The Genesis version played closer to the pen and paper game, while the SNES offering had the edge in atmosphere and story.
Just a reminder that you need to review the Genesis version of Shadowrun still. :)
- This game was one of my Favorite SNES games of all time, probably THE Favorite. It is a great game and I wish there were more like this, but sadly there are very very few that even come close, although your reference to Dejavu was another one I really enjoyed, as well as another one I think was called Shadowkeep - not 100% sure if my memory on that name is correct though.
Niiiiiiiice. Good choice of game to look at. Never played yet.
gotta say it looks really good for an NES game
Ohhhh boy. This is one of my favorite SNES games. Can't wait to see your opinion on it. (I just started)
I've read that this is the spiritual successor to Nightshade for the NES. I would like to know why, And if there are any game developers that worked on both titles
Love this game so good
Awesome game!
Yeah the early Shadow run games have a little of the learning curve to be honest it wasn't until Shadow run returns that I actually love the video games as for the RPG tabletop great story horrible game mechanics worth playing not worth being the GM I don't know if they approved it but the additions I was playing were total nightmare fuel to run
I feel like he tip toed around the D&D comparison as to not anger the shadowrun fans. But like... we don't care we know its cyberpunk D&D. Thats the perfect way to describe it.
FASA Corporation was so cool back in the day. RIP
Hooray! More RPG's please!
Yes, yes, yes. I LOVE this game. Fantastic soundtrack.
we want more buddy miss you!!
Miss you too! New episode tomorrow. New eps every other Friday for now :)
Hi Aaron! Really nice game, different for an snes title, reminding me more of an old school computer game, but nonetheless cool.
I've tried this one in the recent past thanks to emulation consoles. It is..... not for me. BUT! I do enjoy hearing takes from people that enjoyed it, and I gotta admit, it definitely seemed like something you'd enjoy, FNA. You just have those point-and-click "patience skills™" that Infocom's catalog instilled in you, whereas, I do not. This does remind me I should try one of the newer ones by Harebrained Schemes sometime. Shadowrun Hong Kong and the like. Those are more like srpgs I believe...
Loved this game as a kid. Rented it many times.
Great game, but also hard as balls. Same goes for the PC series on Steam.
This game was really good.
One of the best games ever
This version was decent, but the Genesis version was amazing.
👍👍
hey chummer
For some reason I like the Genesis better than the SNES game,
Even though the graphics are better on the SNES.
This was one of my favorites and always wished they made a part two that was the same but better. They did make a part two but it was a garbage first person shooter
