Indeed. I used to make jokes about that sort of thing back then since there would be a massive difference in size between the different robots.........had they not magically changed size in the cartoon. I knew it was silly but loved it anyway. The toys were cool. The cartoon was rather silly, though it matured after the movie.

Try as I might, I simply cannot relate to anyone so upset by the movie. I was 10 years old when my older brother graciously took me to the theatre opening weekend, and… yes I was traumatized watching my favorite characters getting blown to hell. But I also thought it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. This film opened the door and beckoned to me from a darker world of storytelling. Suddenly actions had consequences! I devoured the soundtrack, the movie/sticker-book, and anything else I could find.
Eventually I wore out my local video store's VHS copy due to countless viewing, rewinding, pausing, and frame by frame analysis.
    I was obsessed.
To me Prime had died sacrificing himself to protect his family. I never wanted him back. I wanted his death to have meaning in a 4:3 world intent on selling me sugary breakfast cereal.
Ultimately, though I faithfully watched every episode without fail, and could recite the dialogue and narration verbatim, I think even my precocious 10 year old self knew deep down that Transformers was merely an empty saccharine children's show - and quite frankly, terrible.
Transformers The Movie attempted to raise the bar, leave childish things behind, and shepherd the franchise into maturity… and after shedding tears for Prime and the others, I followed it.

    • @MichaelAlexKawa

This is exactly how I feel. I saw the movie in theaters when I was 11, and like you I was shocked, surprised and sad to see all my favorites especially Prime die, but loved that fact that the movie really seemed like a real movie, and not some rehash of the show. It had consequences, it had meaning and it had emotion. I don't understand the people that disliked it for those very reasons, it was not speaking down to us but instead speaking to us.
I was maturing at the time and I felt that Transformers was growing with me.

Thanks. I think Robotech is essentially what happened to me too. I was going to mention Robotech too, but thought I was rambling. Seeing Robotech's dramatic and intelligent narrative unfolding each morning over a cereal bowl before the bus came illuminated how empty Transformers truly was. I mean, don't misunderstand me, it was giant transforming robots shooting at each other - of COURSE I was going to watch. But it was a guilty pleasure, not a passionate affair. The movie is as close as Transformers ever got to Robotech. As they traveled the galaxy I was afraid for our heroes for the FIRST TIME. (I mean, that Quintesson planet, AM I RIGHT? Who knew what the hell might happen to them there? Guilty or Innocent? COME ON!!!) And we SHOULD be worried. It's a movie. It should change the game. Up the stakes.

My interest in The Transformers certainly died with Optimus Prime. I didn’t realise it at the time as I kept asking my parents for more toys but it was never the same after the movie and I eventually realised that (and moved on to the Ninja Turtles).
My first Transformer was Thundercracker, and I believe he was the only one I ever had to resort to the manual to transform (I couldn’t work out the arms being in his chest, I thought they must be loose somewhere in the box). After that it became something of a matter of pride for my 6 year old self to always work out how to transform them myself.
I still think the Transformers are the best toys ever, they’re fast cars and jet planes that transform into giant fighting robots. What’s not to love about that? I even think they’re just a little bit educational in figuring out how to transform them.

I couldn't see Transformers: The Movie in 86 so I had to wait until it came out on video (which took a lot longer than movie releases to blu ray do today). In early 1987 my dad had an aneurysm and took six months to die. That was pretty much the abrupt end to my childhood but, late in 87, I decided to buy Transformers: The Movie on video to try to claw back some semblance of my childhood. Hoo-boy, what a mistake that was! Well, you can imagine how seeing all the autobots murdered onscreen went down with me. I can actually laugh about it now but, back then, it was like someone coming into the house and burning all my toys in front of my eyes.
Weirdly enough, I found myself watching the movie over and over and wondering why I began to feel it weirdly comforting. It wasn't the same as the '20 minute story with instant reset' that He Man, She Ra, Thundercats, BraveStarr, Jayce & The Wheeled Warriors, etc kept telling. This was a story with consequences and things would be very different going forward. I finally realised that it kind of helped me get things into perspective with my own life. At the end of the movie - even though many of the heroes are dead and the world of the survivors was shattered - the remaining autobots vowed to continue fighting. It felt as if I wasn't the only one that was having a shit time and that you could look forward to getting on with life. As an adult, I can now appreciate the movie for the quite mature attitude it took to telling its admittedly dark story.

My first Transformer was a G1 Jetfire. It took a while for my Dad and I to figure out how to transform it, but once he showed me how, I couldn't put it down. Jetfire would be joined by many other Autobots and Decepticons till I turned 13 and decided I was too old for toys and gave them to my little cousins. That changed on a fateful trip to my local comic book store a few years later where I purchased a G1 Bumblebee and Hotrod and I have been collecting Transformers ever since.

I mean, Windcharger all by himself couldn’t get much playtime mileage, he had to have SOME kind of supporting cast.
Jazz was my favorite. My little brother told the babysitter it was his (when I was at school) and he broke Jazz into about 5 pieces. But alas my heart was broken into many more. My favorite part of the Transformers Movie debacle is that Hasbro totally backpedaled on the GI Joe movie and forced in an awkward "Duke didn't die, he's in a coma" ending. They didn't even animate it, somebody just shouts "Duke is gonna be okay!" from offscreen!

I was maybe 3 or 4 when I saw TF:TM. Transformers was more or less my world and I had no real concept of death until that movie. It hit me like a ton of bricks. I remember putting my Optimus Prime toy face down in the closet because he was dead and I couldn't play with him anymore. I remember the promos for The Return of Optimus Prime right after my birthday and was so pumped that he was back. Powermaster Optimus Prime was THE THING Santa had to get me that year, I pined for that like Ralphie did for his Red Rider BB Gun. And it happened. Those are all some of my best memories from childhood and it still has a lasting impact on me today as I continue buying up slavishly cartoon accurate Masterpiece Transformers.

Hoist was my first Transformer, still got him too. I was a year and a half old in 84 when the Transformers cartoon came out, my older brother had a few, Megatron, Thundercracker, Thrust and Jetfire(later on he gave me all of those)I loved the cartoon as much as he did so I got Hoist because I liked tow trucks. I also had a Optimus Prime play tent shaped like his Tractor-trailer mode. I would later go on to watch re-runs well into the 90s and got tons of G2 toys and garage sale G1 toys. My favorite moment was completing G2 Bruticus, even though a lot dislike the G2 colors, I find them quite pleasing. Second coolest thing ever happened when my mom brought home a huge bag of Transformers toys from a garage sale, for a mere TWO DOLLARS, I got a complete Metroplex, a complete Omega Supreme, a Megatron(bumping me to 2 Megatron P-38s) and a handfull of gobots that were in the bag as well. Sadly I was never able to complete a Devastator or any Autobot combiners. I still have all my old Transformers and occasionally I dig them out and transform a few.
