The SFA tried to pretend they are the same club and their argument is the SFA membership transferred from oldco Rangers to newco Rangers and continuity was unbroken. When the SFA membership transferred, the history and trophys transferred with it. So let me give you some timelines: 14th June 2012 - oldco Rangers CVA is rejected. This resulted in them being removed from the SPL and the process of liquidation began, although they didn't enter liquidation until later that year. There is now no team called Rangers in any league in Scotland and they are replaced by an entity called "team 12" as who will take their place is not decided. 4th July 2012 - newco Rangers (who don't have any league or SFA membership) apply to join the SPL. The SPL clubs vote and reject the application. 14th July 2012 - newco Rangers (who still don't have any league or SFA membership) apply to join the 1st division but SFA clubs reject the application. They apply to join 2nd division but again SFA clubs reject the application. They apply to join the 3rd division and their application is accepted. Despite having their application accepted they cannot join the league as they do not have an SFA membership. 27th July 2012 - newco Rangers granted a SFA Conditional Membership (despite there not being such a thing as I have been through the rule book with a fine tooth comb). However, they still cannot join the 3rd division as the SFA membership is at oldco Rangers. 29th July 2012 - newco Rangers play their first ever game against Brechin City in the Ramsden's Cup. At this point they have no history and no trophys as the SFA membership has not transferred. 3rd August 2012 - SFA membership is transferred from oldco Rangers to newco Rangers. Newco Rangers are now allowed to join the 3rd division and after a 2 month absence from Scottish football a team called Rangers now appear in the lowest tier of the football pyramid.
