  • The eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) is without a doubt, America's turtle. Many of us got our start with this familiar turtle species as children and the awe has never left us when it comes to witnessing them. These iconic box turtles come in a variety of wonderful colors and they have an extensive range in the USA. Habitat preferences vary from meadows, deciduous forests, pine forests, wetlands and farmland with many ending up right in our own backyards. Their ability to use a single hinge on the plastron to completely seal shut in an effort to avoid predators is an adaptation only a primitive animal would display. Eastern box turtles have been around forever, have captivated the world and remain a favorite among reptile enthusiasts and biologists. Their future remains uncertain as they succumb to road mortality, habitat destruction and illegal collection for the pet trade and it's up to us as humans to work to keep them around. In this video we highlight the beloved eastern box turtle to bring you their interesting behaviors, distinguishing traits, how we house them at Garden State Tortoise and their outstanding, natural color.

Dear Chris, your beautiful wife and children, I have loved and treasured the box turtle from an early age to my current age of 67. Growing up they were always part of my summer and as our collection grew we found ourselves with many a hatchling. The turtles were always returned to the spot where they were found at summers end but for that period they were best of what summer offered up. The hatchlings were always returned after the summer of the following year close to where we found the adults. As time moved on and moves happened and growing up and college into adulthood I never lost those memories of my cherished friends. As I got older I had many opportunities to purchase an Eastern or three toed, but I always came to my senses figuring what will happen if I can't provide for it in my later years? There was no one I could count on to carry on. Yet this past Spring I realized when I left this world I would leave it unfulfilled so I bought a hatchling from a vendor this spring. Retired now, never married or kids I have found what was missing and I couldn't be more pleased with my little friend. I still wonder about my future and how long I have with it but I will figure all that out on rainy days and add a addendum to my will to continue it's long and wonderful life. I'm so proud of what you and your wife are accomplishing with all your turts and torts, especially your work with the diamond back terrapin. I hope one day to meet up with you and say thanks in person and to pick your brain and hopefully find that right individual who like you will love and cherish mine. All Best, David

Hope you live healthy life and many many years with your turtle friend … it is difficult to find a caretaker for this unique animal and I’m glad you connected with the right people who will care for your turtle in case something happens to you .. I soak mine in raw cow milk , raw organic carrot juice and wheatgrass juice ( all separately not together ). .turtles are lovely creatures and very clean too !! Wish you all the best and hope you find a wife who can enjoy your turtle with you .. not too late to find a gf / wife and live your dream with a loving family .

My property has about an acre of a shallow pond and an additional acre or so of marsh land (all natural). I had no idea until recently of how many turtles live in there. My hubby and I pulled some logs and put them around the bank for basking areas. Oh my goodness - we both are obsessed with sitting at the pond and watching the turtles now. I called him today so excited bc I finally saw a box turtle on a log. Thank you for your videos. We have learned so much from you and your family! We’re both fully invested in taking care of the turtle habitat and alert to look out for turtle nests and hatchlings right now.

Back in the 80's when I was 10 or so me and my sister would catch em and feed em for 2 or 3 days in a shoebox then let them go. For 6 or 7 years straight the same turtle would show up in the backyard. We know it was the same turtle because me sister painted his nails hot pink. and he'd show up each year with a little bit of the polish left. she'd redo it every year. He ate like a king for 3 or 4 days of the year.

Eastern Box Turtles are my absolute favorite and I have been fortunate to see a decent population of them in my area which we try to keep tabs on. I would like to further educate myself and be able to do more for them in my area and state because sadly there are few resources available to wild animals and it's sad. Keep up the fantastic work that you do.

I live in rural Oklahoma we have a large pond on our property and Eastern box turtles are thriving in our pond. All that I do is prevent algae from taking over and fresh aerated water. I recently retired & moved here. This life is all new to me and I’m learning. If I see them on the road I bring them home and put them in our pond.

Please don't! Relocating box turtles can cause them to wander forever, trying to find their way home. Also, they do not live I'm ponds. They might stop for a drink or a soak, but they are not aquatic turtles. Please stop stealing them from their homes!

We live in a suburb in New Castle, DE. Our house backs up on the Christiana River. We see lots of turtle activity…some very big female snappers looking for egg sites this year. Love box turtles. For a while a little Delaware grey tree frog hung out in the brick wall of a front flower bed. Whenever hubby cut the crass, the frog would sit on top of the wall a watch the process, his little head rotating from side to side. Eventually he headed back down to the river’s edge, probably looking for love.

I was horrified to discover an adult box turtle in a local pet store in Detroit. The managers said it was surrendered to them and they were trying to make a quick buck by selling it. Knowing that the outcome for this turtle would probably be bleak I bought it and surrendered it to a reptile rescue and rehab guy. This happened to me twice at the same store so I made sure they had the phone number for the reptile rescuer. Later I learned that our state of Michigan prohibits sales of native turtles in state and you must have a permit plus proof of purchase if you acquired a native turtle outside of Michigan.

How much space do eastern box turtles need? What plants are safe to plant in their enclosure? How big and deep can the pond be for the box turtle? How do you make sure the pond is clean for the turtle? How do you introduce insects for them to eat? How tall do you need the fence to be and how deep into the ground should you put it?

PLEASE ..Maybe you can help ? We have spotted a box turtle on our tiny urban lot in a congested area of Camden County . Our neighbors house is in disrepair along with the property being not maintained…and that was the case with our property for many years .
We moved in 4 years ago and fortunately we are into a “clean” environment.. zero use of pesticides or weed killers or fertilizers. We have been removing non natives and replacing with all natives ( bird and pollinator friendly ). And we got wildlife certified etc.
now back to the box turtle … he showed up two springs on our property which abuts the neighbors . That property is not too long in future going to be torn up with heavy equipment and the house re built and big addition added … these are very small lots .
    I have planted “may pop”
but we don’t have the weed growth the neighbor has had
And now a landscaper is coming thru weekly and mowing that property down with big loud riding mower.
What can I do help or save this turtle!!! I am so worried about “him?” .. 😢😢
Thankfully I came across your video so now I know to stop pulling the wild strawberry. But do you have any ideas? I wanted to try to install a small shallow ( non mosquito breeding ) pond for turtles/toads/salamanders or frogs or whatever … our property is sloped and very dry except for the back left corner near that neighbor ( he too is sloped). Supposedly we have a creek running underneath our properties which makes sense when u see the elevation change and cooper river blocks away .
I’m really concerned about him 😭😭

I live in PA and they are native here but also illegal to own. NJ is not the same?

Do breeders breed to repopulate areas or just to keep for future. I would like to see them released.

Beautiful animals. Hey Chris, what did you do with that clutch of eggs?
You didn't leave them where you found them? 🤔 🐢

Got into a fist fight with my drunk brother over him putting an Eastern box turtle in our mother's gold fish pond. He got mad that I immediately pulled him out and put him back where he was found. He was the first wild one I had ever seen.Had to flex that big brother muscle lol

I learned something new today 😁 I didn’t know about the flat and the concave to determine male or female 😊 along with the position of the vent. Question- would the eggs hatch if they were left in the nest? Or would you risk losing some?

Depends. If they are not native to your place then its best to artificially incubate them. If they are however, then just put a mesh over the nest to prevent predation. However its always a good idea to put them in an incubator which you can build at home for a pretty low cost.
