  • Dr. Eugenia Cheng is Scientist In Residence at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She won tenure in Pure Mathematics at the University of Sheffield, UK, where she is now Honorary Fellow. Alongside her research in Category Theory and undergraduate teaching her aim is to rid the world of “math phobia”. Eugenia is also math columnist for the Wall Street Journal and a concert pianist.
Emotions are powerful. In newspaper headlines and on social media, they have become the primary way of understanding the world. With her new book "The Art of Logic: How to Make Sense in a World that Doesn't", Eugenia has set out to show how mathematical logic can help us see things more clearly - and know when politicians and companies are trying to mislead us. This talk, like the book, is filled with useful real-life examples of logic and illogic at work and an essential guide to decoding modern life.

Very interesting how such logical systems can produce such flawed conclusions when the input used is false. I wonder how complex it would be if we made an "Abstract Math Chat" system where people could add and rewire. It should be possible to build a system where we could express ideas to each other more efficient, but it might be hard to get around flawed input in the equations. At least we could point out where we see logical fallacies easier. I wonder if we will send thoughts of geometrical patterns to each other in the future to prove our points and if we will be able to agree more with each other.

What she is providing is a means of tweezing apart the underlying factors and their relationships that bring about an outcome, an outcome we fail to see because we are too emotionally invested in how we feel. For example, I absolutely don't understand why the overwhelming number of evangelicals are Trump supporters. It baffles and angers me. BUT, if someone, more intelligent than I, could write down all the possible factors and the relationship of those entities to each other, than I may get a better sense of how/why they feel the way they do (not that it's morally correct or congruent with their teachings) - then it makes me more intelligent via "logic." Then, at least to some degree, there is better understanding than the more crude blanket of emotional disdain that consumes our political rancor.

Although I see the value of logic, what Teacher Cheng does not address is that logic dictates that people should learn proper moral values. If they did, many of the responses she suggested wouldn't happen. F.i. the example of the man that doesn't feel respected and thus cans give love. That is the result of being raised into a selfish person. With a bit more sense of altruism he would not blackmail his partner by witholding love due to not experiencing enough respect. It is illogical to accept avarice as normal. It reduces the person to the mechanical level of a car. It is especially the interconnectedness she addresses that makes it valuable to see non linearity as being part of logic, and not just simple linear causalit

When people who are leaders in society and who enjoy the most privilege are the same people who are illogical then my position is that they cannot be swayed, no matter how optimistic we can be. Scripture alludes to this that wicked people will continue a wicked course even if they existed in a world where righteousness was the order of the day. I say this to say, as much as we would like to save the world in our capacity as well meaning humans, we are confronted with an enemy that is much too stubborn and cunning for our likes, and only in putting our hopes in the Creator can we restassured that we will be rid of these pests.

I personally think the “power” in a romantic relationship is given. Who wears the pants in the relationship? Although it sounds a little backwards, whoever would do less for the other has more power. If you are the one cooking, cleaning, or doing the overall chores, then you’re significant other most likely has more power. If you are the one watching your significant other doing the cleaning, then you probably have more power in the relationship.
A very imperfect reasoning but it’s a start.

Numbers always have the same value, so the diagram with numbers makes obvious, logical sense. However, the factors in your relationship diagram do not. The general categories A, B and C can have substitutes like, Men, Elves and Gandalf or droids, Jedi and Skywalker. Some Tolkien fan or Star Wars nerd will understand the relationship and accept the hierarchy without further proof. You've skipped over the proof of your factors, so the analogy fails. You also don't adequately prove how more mathematical connections in one diagram equate to more privilege in relationships in another. Logic isn't about analogy and inference, it's about proof.

Unfalsifiable. That's why I used that word. She, and myself, and countless other successful colored people are evidence that the premise is false, but her hypothesis is different. It may be true, as she proposed it, but unfalsifiable. It's a lot like other oppression hypothesis; you need to be oppressed in order to see the oppression. This makes it subjective in nature, and not objectively verifiable.
And false and unfalsifiable are not mutually exclusive. Something can be both false, and unfalsifiable. Such as the god of Abraham. It is not testable, so it's not falsifiable, but similarly, several mutually exclusive traits that are commonly attributed to it throughout the abrahamic religions make it an impossibility, so it must be false. False, and unfalsifiable at the same time.

Of course Nuvey ignored all that because when he heard the word privilege, he had a mental breakdown.

I didn't ignore anything. I don't seem to get notifications for these replies. Not sure how to change that.
The entire idea is based on subjective feelings. It can't be falsified because it can't be proven how people feel using objective evidence.

@@nuvey7939 No it isn't...She quite literally talks about it herself with pivot and that there are varying levels of privilege. And you're demonstrating what she picked up on is people misunderstand what the theory is and overgeneralise it.

@ippos_khloros I understand the meaning of 'exaggeration'. It's 'over'exaggeration that is meaningless.

    pure claptrap.
graphing the common divisors by their own common divisors into a hierarchical cube adds no new math information and gives no insight more than the fundamental theorem of arithmetic. It states that all numbers are prime or product of 2 primes. The fundamental theorem of arithmetic can be stated more succinctly and is more general than the diagram championed in this video.
The transition to equity and diversity is a perversion of math from a tool to understand reality to bolstering the present politically correct teaching at our universities that math is sexist and racist. This program needs to be called out for what it is, ie. Allowing everyone to proclaim their victimhood. The lecturer asserts that bias and racism is the privilege of some people because of power structures inherent in the "cube of mathematics" The assertion that intelligent people do not hurt others is contradicted by our everyday experience and is untenable. .

people are so easy to impress here. insufficient analogy is no 1 problem in discussions. and you just need a little of formal logic which is taught at law or philosophical studies for example. You pay thousands for education which is at your fingertips from so many years. How come that this is hot topic? this book is so cliche. no new concepts. just exploiting illiteracy. and BTW thanks to deep learning math as a narrative science is dead ;)

The book could have been much better but the author's bitterness manifested in so many examples it became tiresome.
