Back in High School in German class we watched part of The Pink Panther Strikes again where Clouseau goes to October Fest everyone in the class loved it and we persuaded to let the Teacher show us the rest of the movie in like 5 minute clips before class ended each day.
Peter Sellers was one of the greatest and most versatile comic [or otherwise] actors of all-time --- The Pink Panther(s), The Party, Dr. Strangelove, Casino Royale (1967), A shot in the dark, ... , Being There. His genius will always be remembered.

How they ever managed to make it these films is beyond me. It must have been impossible to hold it together when Peter sellers was in full flow.
The scene works so well also because of the puzzlement, shock, confusion of the desk clerk. Also a real pro as an actor.
